Book Design of a Municipal Yard Waste Composting Facility for Anderson County South Carolina

Download or read book Design of a Municipal Yard Waste Composting Facility for Anderson County South Carolina written by Michael Evan Klapmeyer and published by . This book was released on 2003-12-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anderson County is a 758-square-mile region of South Carolina comprised of nine municipalities and approximately 170,000 residents. Anderson County residents discard more than 105,000 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) each year, including an estimated 20,000 tons of yard waste. This yard waste constitutes 19 percent of the total discarded MSW, making Anderson County's disposal of yard waste nearly three times greater than the national average of 7 percent. Large-scale composting is a proven method by which Anderson County can demonstrate sound environmental stewardship while drastically reducing the volume of waste entering county landfills, thereby extending their usable life. However, the major aspects of planning, constructing, and operating a municipal yard waste composting facility must be fully understood before undertaking such an endeavor. Subsequently, this research contains comprehensive information on the principles of composting in an effort to assist Anderson County in creating the cost-effective means to produce a consistently high-quality and marketable end product.

Book Native Plants for New England Gardens

Download or read book Native Plants for New England Gardens written by Mark Richardson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native plants are drought tolerant, disease resistant, wildlife friendly, and environmentally sound. Experts increasingly encourage gardeners to use natives exclusively. This handy and practical guide focuses on 100 great native flowers, ground covers, shrubs, ferns, and grasses that will thrive in New England gardens. The presentation is aimed at gardeners, who want concise, practical information. It will also include material on the importance and desirability of using native plants. The heart of this book is 100 two-page spreads, one for each species. The spreads will include facts about the plant of use to a gardener (not a botanist)—where it grows best, when it blooms, the soil conditions in which it thrives, its appeal to wildlife, sunlight requirements, how high it grows, how to propagate it, and how to avoid any problems particular to the species. Each spread will also feature two color photos.

Download or read book Waste Matters written by Nikole Bouchard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-02 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thousands of years humans have experimented with various methods of waste disposal—from burning and burying to simply packing up and moving in search of an unscathed environment. Habits of disposal are deeply ingrained in our daily lives, so casual and continual that we rarely ever stop to ponder the big-picture effects on social, spatial and ecological orders. Rethinking the ways in which we produce, collect, discard and reuse our waste, whether it’s materials, spaces or places, is essential to ensure a more feasible future. Waste Matters: Adaptive Reuse for Productive Landscapes presents a series of historical and contemporary design ideas that reimagine a range of repurposed materials at diverse scales and in various contexts by exploring methods of hacking, disassembly, reassembly, recycling, adaptive reuse and preservation of the built environment. Waste Matters will inspire designers to sample and rearrange bits of artifacts from the past and present to produce culturally relevant and ecologically sensitive materials, objects, architecture and environments.
