Book The Unchosen Ones

Download or read book The Unchosen Ones written by R. J. Kern and published by MW Editions. This book was released on with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2016, award-winning Minnesota-based photographer R. J. Kern made portraits of youth contestants at Minnesota county fairs. Each participant—some as young as four years old—had spent a year raising an animal, which they had then entered into a 4-H livestock competition. None of the youths who sat for him had succeeded in winning an award, despite the obvious care they had given to their animals. The Unchosen Ones depicts the bloom of youth and the mettle of the kids who grow up on farms, reminding us how resilient children can be when confronted with life's inevitable disappointments. The formal qualities of the lighting and setting endow these young people with a gravitas beyond their years, revealing self-directed dedication in some, and in others, perhaps, the pressures of traditions imposed upon them. Kern's beautiful portraits capture a particular America, a rural world, and a time in life when the layered emotions of youth are laid bare. Four years later, in 2020, Kern returned to photograph his young subjects. The most recent photographs show how the children have grown into adolescence or young adulthood: some of them have continued to pursue animal husbandry, while others have developed other interests. It is likely that some of these kids will not choose to continue running their family farms—an unpredictable and demanding way to make a living. These diptychs are punctuated by lush landscapes of the farms that are their homes. As Kern made the second group of photographs, he asked his young subjects what they had carried forward from their previous experience. What were their thoughts, their dreams, and their goals for the future? How would they fit into the future of agricultural America?

Book Arcadian Visions

Download or read book Arcadian Visions written by Allan R. Ruff and published by Windgather Press. This book was released on 2015-10-31 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about Arcadia and the pastoral tradition; what it has meant for successive generations and their vision of the landscape, as well as the implications this has had for its design and management. Today the concept of Arcadia, and way it has shaped our landscape, is dimly perceived and little understood by landscape architects and those responsible for the management of land. This is in marked contrast to previous centuries when the vision of Arcadia and the pastoral was implanted by education among the more privileged in society. Young men spent many hours translating and learning by rote the words of Virgil and other classical authors and on the Grand Tour they would be introduced to work of painters like Poussin and Claude and their interpretations of the Ideal pastoral landscape. Today Arcadia holds as powerful an influence as at any time in the past and it is important that we plan our urban environment in ways that harmonize with the natural world. Arcadian Visions provides an alternative landscape history for all those involved with the landscape - either through its design, management, use or enjoyment. It begins by examining the origins of Arcadia and the pastoral in the classical poetry of Theocritus and Virgil, and the effects of, and on, Christianity before outlining its development in renaissance Italy and subsequently in the Netherlands, America and England. It concludes by looking at how Arcadian ecology is bringing about a reappraisal of the pastoral in the 21st century.

LISTS OF THE PRINCIPAL WORKS OF RUISDAEL, HOBBEMA, CUIJP AND POTTER. The similarity of many of their subjects, coupled with the uncertain and often varying titles given to pictures by their owners, renders it difficult to trace in private galleries the works of such artists as Ruisdael, Hobbema and Cuijp. Added to this, the private collections in England are, with a few notable exceptions, without any catalogues worthy of their contents. With regard to the public galleries of England and the Continent, the works are given under the names and in the order in which they appear in the latest editions of the official catalogues. Special reference, for their critical value, must be made to those of Amsterdam (Dr. Bredius); Berlin (L. Scheibler, Dr. Bode and Dr. Meyer); Cassel (Dr. Eisenmann); Dresden (Dr. Woermann); Dulwich (Dr. Richter and J. C. L. Sparkes); London, National Gallery (Sir F. W. Burton); Munich (Dr. Reber); and Vienna, Belvedere (Dr. Engerth). Much useful information is also contained in Mr. Algernon Graves's Manuscript Analysis of the Loan Exhibitions held in Great Britain from 1813 till the present time. The pictures have been catalogued according to the towns in which they are; the towns have been placed alphabetically in their respective countries, which are also arranged alphabetically. The names in Roman type between square brackets indicate the collections through which the pictures have passed; those in italic the loan exhibitions to which they have been contributed. Download or read book Rubens s Landscapes written by Christopher Brown and published by National Gallery London. This book was released on 1998-08 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher Brown takes a fresh look at the development of Rubens's landscape paintings, re-examining their chronology and their construction, and reconsidering the works in the context of Ruben's life and artistic concerns. He begins his survey by placing the landscapes in the tradition of Flemish landscape painting, in particular showing their relationship to the work of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (whose Flight into Egypt was owned by Rubens). He looks at Rubens's early landscapes, completed in the years following his return from Italy in 1608, immediately raising one of the principal themes of the book: how these paintings were made. A chapter is devoted to Landscape with Het Steen, in which he describes Rubens's life as a country gentleman - his purchase of the estate of Het Steen and the time he spent there in the 1630s with his second wife and young family - and discusses the composition of Landscape with Het Steen and its pendant the Landscape with a Rainbow (now in the Wallace Collection, London). He also considers Rubens's pastoral landscapes of the 1630s, showing how their mood was influenced by classical literature. Rubens's working methods - his drawing from nature, his adaptation of landscape motifs in the studio, his use of oil sketches - are compared with contemporary landscape practice, and in a chapter on the making of the landscapes Dr. Brown describes the construction, preparation and the ground of the panels Rubens used for his landscape paintings, and the panelmakers who made them. Finally, he considers the last years at Het Steen and the ways in which Rubens's essentially private landscape paintings were made known during his lifetime and later, for example throughengravings, and looks at the influence of these works on British painters, particularly Gainsborough and Constable.

Download or read book Australian Pastoral written by Jeanette Hoorn and published by Fremantle Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian Pastoral is a radical history of the pastoral landscape in Australian painting. As a primary means through which white settlement was described and legitimised, the pastoral was transcendent in European Australian art from the late eighteenth to the middle of the twentieth century. This book shows how pastoralism displaced all in its path, and how the pastoral landscape became a special art form in Australia and the primary means through which 'whiteness' and the taming of Australia was celebrated in painting. The book traces the history of pastoral painting through to the emergence in recent times of a black 'pastoral' landscape painting.
