This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landscape Painting and Modern Dutch Artists The same scene might be painted by Ruys dael and Hobbema, by Constable and Turner, by Daubigny and Rousseau, and each pic ture would take on the spirit of the individual artist, and give the observer very different ideas of identical views. For if it is not the actual scene before him that is painted, but his idea of it, it is evident that the personality of the artist counts for a very great deal in pictures; and so it is the subjective view of art that is the all-important one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landscape Painting and Modern Dutch Artists "Ars Longa, Vita Brevis" The years are fading fast, But we will not complain, While you and I outlast The past, And love and hope remain. So let us just keep still, While time flies far away, And loiter on the hill, At will, Forever and a day. Playing at life and art, Wandering to and fro, Forgetting we must part, Dear Heart, Some day, and all forego. Though Art be long, yet we Have little time to spend Amid its witchery; Ah me! The years so quickly end. Still when the leaves fall sere, Foretelling wintry weather, We'll travel on, nor fear, My Dear, If we but go together. E. B. G. Book The Subjective View of Landscape Painting

Download or read book The Subjective View of Landscape Painting written by E. B. Greenshields and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Subjective View of Landscape Painting: With Special Reference to J. H. Weissenbruch and Illustrations From Works of His in Canada The writer hopes that this little pamphlet may prove of some interest to lovers of art, and, perhaps, may bring some information that may be of use to those commencing to study pictures, and save them some time and trouble by bringing before them, in compact form, the opinions of critics and writers about painting. He has always, himself, been very much obliged to anyone who has helped to shorten the road for him. Regarding the opinions expressed about the seven Dutch artists spoken of in these pages as the great forces in modern Dutch art, he has made a study of their works for some years, and is firmly of the opinion that seldom in the world's history has a greater group of individual artists appeared. He believes that this will be the ultimate opinion of the public. The frontispiece, from a photograph taken in 1900, shows J. H. Weissenbruch and the picture he painted for the Paris Universal Exhibition. The other portrait is from a water colour drawing by Josef Israels, made some years ago. Book Landscape and Religion from Van Eyck to Rembrandt

Download or read book Landscape and Religion from Van Eyck to Rembrandt written by Boudewijn Bakker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a corrective to the common scholarly characterization of seventeenth-century Dutch landscape painting as modern, realistic and secularized, Boudewijn Bakker here explores the long history and purpose of landscape in Netherlandish painting. In Bakker's view, early Netherlandish as well as seventeenth-century Dutch painting can be understood only in the context of the intellectual climate of the day. Concentrating on landscape painting as the careful depiction of the visible world, Bakker's analysis takes in the thought of figures seldom consulted by traditional art historians, such as the fifteenth-century philosopher Dionysius the Carthusian, the sixteenth-century religious reformer John Calvin, the geographer Abraham Ortelius and the seventeenth-century poet Constantijn Huygens. Probing their conception of nature as 'the first Book of God' and art as its representation, Bakker identifies a world view that has its roots in the traditional Christian perceptions of God and creation. Landscape and Religion from Van Eyck to Rembrandt imposes a new layer of interpretation on the richly varied landscapes of the great masters. In so doing it adds a new dimension to the insights offered by modern art-historical research. Further, Bakker's explorations of early modern art and literature provide essential background for any student of European intellectual history.
