Book Urban Landscape Ecology

Download or read book Urban Landscape Ecology written by Robert A. Francis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of cities poses ever-increasing challenges for the natural environment on which they impact and depend, not only within their boundaries but also in surrounding peri-urban areas. Landscape ecology – the study of interactions across space and time between the structure and function of physical, biological and cultural components of landscapes – has a pivotal role to play in identifying sustainable solutions. This book brings together examples of research at the cutting edge of urban landscape ecology across multiple contexts that investigate the state, maintenance and restoration of healthy and functional natural environments across urban and peri-urban landscapes. An explicit focus is on urban landscapes in contrast to other books which have considered urban ecosystems and ecology without specific focus on spatial connections. It integrates research and perspectives from across academia, public and private practitioners of urban conservation, planning and design. It provides a much needed summary of current thinking on how urban landscapes can provide the foundation of sustained economic growth, prospering communities and personal well-being.

Book Ecological and Societal Impacts of Suburban White tailed Deer

Download or read book Ecological and Societal Impacts of Suburban White tailed Deer written by Rachael Elizabeth Urbanek and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many natural resource agencies are managing white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations in suburban areas and require information about deer populations, deer impacts on vegetation, and human preferences toward deer and deer management to support decision making. The author's study, based in the Chicago Metropolitan Area during 2007-2011, utilized a multi-faceted approach to investigate common obstacles in suburban deer management. In these findings, the author discusses the need for managers to examine suburban deer populations and management issues at a broader scale (i.e., countywide versus single community) and the promotion of proactive deer management in lieu of the conventional paradigm of beginning management only when deer populations have become overabundant. Discussion topics include practicality and costs of deer density estimation and herbivory monitoring techniques over multiple plant communities and numerous study sites. In addition, the author illustrates how a comprehensive human dimensions survey can identify determinants that contribute to the public's perceptions of deer density and assess the acceptability, conflict, and beliefs regarding deer management methods. Lastly, the author describes the relationship between landscape characteristics and deer density; this information can be utilized to determine suburban lands that may be prone to high deer densities and inform land management practices. The author's work provides suburban natural resource managers with techniques to identify management practices supported by their public constituents and information useful for managing deer populations.

Book The Science of Overabundance

Download or read book The Science of Overabundance written by William J. Mcshea and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2003-01-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Easily the most common of America’s large wildlife species, white-tailed deer are often referred to as "overabundant." But when does a species cross the threshold from common to overpopulated? This question has been the focus of debate in recent years among hunters, animal rights activists, and biologists. William McShea and his colleagues explore every aspect of the issue in The Science of Overabundance. Are there really too many deer? Do efforts to control deer populations really work? What broader lessons can we learn from efforts to understand deer population dynamics? Through twenty-three chapters, the editors and contributors dismiss widely held lore and provide solid information on this perplexing problem.

Book Ecology and Management of White tailed Deer in an Agricultural Landscape

Download or read book Ecology and Management of White tailed Deer in an Agricultural Landscape written by Charles Wayne Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current research is necessary to focus management of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the agricultural midwest, especially given the novel presence of chronic wasting disease in the region. Objectives were to: (1) examine the potential effects of weather and row-crop harvest on daily harvest of white-tailed deer by archery, and individual hunter variables (e.g., age, weapon preference, preference of hunting method) on individual hunter efficiency and success in 2 regions of Illinois (i.e., east-central and southern Illinois); (2) estimate white-tailed deer densities using direct (i.e., spotlighting deer from road transects) and indirect (i.e., counting pellet groups on randomly-placed transects) techniques across 3 study areas in the midwestern U.S.; (3) quantify sex, age, and season-specific survival and dispersal rates of white-tailed deer in east-central Illinois; and (4) assess habitat selection of white-tailed deer during the summer months in east-central Illinois.

Download or read book White Tailed Deer Habitat written by Timothy Edward Fulbright and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-08 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original, 2006 edition of Timothy Edward Fulbright and J. Alfonso Ortega-S.’s White-Tailed Deer Habitat: Ecology and Management on Rangelands was hailed as “a splendid reference for the classroom and those who make their living from wildlife and the land” and as “filling a niche that is not currently approached in the literature.” In this second, full-color edition, revised and expanded to include the entire western United States and northern Mexico, Fulbright and Ortega-S. provide a carefully reasoned synthesis of ecological and range management principles that incorporates rangeland vegetation management and the impact of crops, livestock, predation, and population density within the context of the arid and semiarid habitats of this broad region. As landowners look to hunting as a source of income and to the other benefits of managing for wildlife, the clear presentation of the up-to-date research gathered in this book will aid their efforts. Essential points covered in this new edition include: White-tailed deer habitat requirements Nutritional needs of White-tailed deer Carrying capacity Habitat management Hunting Focused across political borders and written with an understanding of environments where periodic drought punctuates long-term weather patterns, this revised and expanded edition of White-Tailed Deer Habitat: Ecology and Management on Rangelands will aid landowners, researchers, and naturalists in their efforts to integrate land management and use with sound ecological practices.

Book White tailed Deer Ecology and Deer human Conflict in an Exurban Landscape

Download or read book White tailed Deer Ecology and Deer human Conflict in an Exurban Landscape written by Daniel J. Storm and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exurban development is non-metropolitan, residential development characterized by a human population density and average property size intermediate between suburban and rural areas. The interspersion and juxtaposition of wildlife habitat, roads, and other forms of human development is the end result of exurbanization. Among the many potential consequences of exurban development is its influence on white-tailed deer ( Odocoileus virginianus ) ecology and deer-human conflict. Despite the expansion of exurban areas in North America, few studies have considered how human dwellings and their associated habitat modifications may affect space-use of deer. Further, no studies have explicitly examined the potential for deer-human conflict in exurbia. During October 2002-March 2004, 37 does were radiocollared (20 GPS, 17 VHF) in an exurban setting near Carbondale, Illinois. A mail survey was administered to 159 study area residents regarding their experiences with and attitudes towards deer as well as their preferences for deer population trend. Book White tailed Deer Habitat

Download or read book White tailed Deer Habitat written by Timothy E. Fulbright and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of the last century, range management meant managing land for livestock. How well a landowner grew the grass that cattle ate was the best measure of success. In this century, landowners look to hunting and wildlife viewing for income; rangeland is now also wildlife habitat, and they are managing their land not just for cattle but also for wildlife, most notably deer and quail. Unlike other books on white-tailed deer in places where rainfall is relatively high and the environment stable, this book takes an ecological approach to deer management in the semiarid lands of Oklahoma, Texas, and northern Mexico. These are the least productive of white-tail habitats, where periodic drought punctuates long-term weather patterns. The book's focus on this landscape across political borders is one of its original and lasting contributions. Another is its contention that good management is based on ecological principles that guide the manager's thinking about: Habitat Requirements of White-Tailed Deer White-Tailed Deer Nutrition Carrying Capacity Habitat Manipulation Predators Hunting Timothy Edward Fulbright is a Regents Professor and the Meadows Professor in Semiarid Land Ecology at the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute, Texas A&M University-Kingsville. J. Alfonso Ortega-S., is an associate professor at the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute, Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

Book Relationship of Landscape Characteristics to White tail Deer Abundance and Harvest Vulnerability in Missouri

Download or read book Relationship of Landscape Characteristics to White tail Deer Abundance and Harvest Vulnerability in Missouri written by Craig Kenneth Pullins and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations have challenged deer managers in Missouri. So to improve deer management, our objectives were to the determine relationships of habitat characteristics and deer abundance and harvest vulnerability in Deer Management Units (DMUs) of Missouri, and deer abundance in Missouri state parks. We created a priori models relating habitat patterns such as cover, food, and human use models to abundance and vulnerability. In state parks, we found factors inside and outside parks influenced deer abundance, such as the amount and juxtaposition of cover within parks, agricultural resources or road densities around parks. These findings will improve deer management of parks by providing an understanding of specific habitat conditions both in parks and adjacent areas that influence deer abundance throughout Missouri. We found DMUs had higher deer abundance in landscapes with decreased proportions of public land, high habitat fragmentation, increased road density, or a combination of these. We expect DMUs with these habitats, mainly found in north Missouri, to have higher deer abundance or greater potential for population growth. For our final objective, we found deer were less vulnerable in DMUs with increased road densities and increased availability of public land. Therefore, it will be easier to manage deer populations in DMUs with more roads and public land because deer are more vulnerable to harvest. But it might be challenging for managers to maintain or reduce deer populations in DMUs with increased urban/suburban areas or less public land due to decreased vulnerability.

Download or read book Deerland written by Al Cambronne and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-03-21 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1942 America fell in love with Bambi. But now, that love-affair has turned sour. Behind the unassuming grace and majesty of America’s whitetail deer is the laundry list of human health, social, and ecological problems that they cause. They destroy crops, threaten motorists, and spread Lyme disease all across the United States. In Deerland, Al Cambronne travels across the country, speaking to everybody from frustrated farmers, to camo-clad hunters, to humble deer-enthusiasts in order to get a better grasp of the whitetail situation. He discovers that the politics surrounding deer run surprisingly deep, with a burgeoning hunting infrastructure supported by state government and community businesses. Cambronne examines our history with the whitetail, pinpoints where our ecological problems began, and outlines the environmental disasters we can expect if our deer population continues to go unchecked. With over 30 million whitetail in the US, Deerland is a timely and insightful look at the ecological destruction being wrecked by this innocent and adored species. Cambronne asks tough questions about our enviroment’s future and makes the impact this invasion has on our own backyards.

Book Community level Effects of a Widescale Reduction in White tailed Deer Odocoileus Virginianus Density

Download or read book Community level Effects of a Widescale Reduction in White tailed Deer Odocoileus Virginianus Density written by Mariah Slaughter and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prolonged overabundance of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) throughout the deciduous forests of eastern North America has resulted in widespread changes in the understory community. Studies have demonstrated that the exclusion of deer can allow some aspects of the understory to recover, but there are strong time-lags for deer-preferred species. Additionally, these exclosures only test the presence/absence of deer, which is not a feasible management option or desirable as deer are a part of the community. Here I evaluate how large-scale deer density manipulations within the Kinzua Quality Deer Cooperative of Pennsylvania affected understory vegetation communities. Using data from six periodic intensive vegetation surveys I assessed multiple measures of understory response, from both woody and non-woody components of the understory, including potential time-lags in recovery. Most measures I used showed some recovery while deer densities were reduced, and negative responses to increasing deer density. Often recovery responses showed varied degrees of time-lag. Overall, these findings suggest that large-scale manipulations in deer density are a viable management plan to promote community recovery following long-term deer overabundance. However, the recovery process can quickly be reversed if deer density rises, so consistent management policies are required to see long-term change.
