Book Geography of Claudius Ptolemy

Download or read book Geography of Claudius Ptolemy written by Claudius Ptolemy and published by Cosimo Classics. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geography of Claudius Ptolemy, originally titled Geographia and written in the second century, is a depiction of the geography of the Roman Empire at the time. Though inaccurate due to Ptolemy's varying methods of measurement and use of outdated data, Geography of Claudius Ptolemy is nonetheless an excellent example of ancient geographical study and scientific method. This edition contains more than 40 maps and illustrations, reproduced based on Ptolemy's original manuscript. It remains a fascinating read for students of scientific history and Greek influence. CLAUDIUS PTOLEMY (A.D. 90- A.D. 168) was a poet, mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, and geographer who wrote in Greek, though he was a Roman citizen. He is most well-known for three scientific treatises he wrote on astronomy, astrology, and geography, respectively titled Almagest, Apotelesmatika, and Geographia. His work influenced early Islamic and European studies, which in turn influenced much of the modern world. Ptolemy died in Alexandria as a member of Greek society.

Book Stories from South Uist

Download or read book Stories from South Uist written by Angus MacLellan and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an extraordinary collection of tales from one of the very greatest Gaelic storytellers, Angus MacLellan, and translated by one of Scotland's finest Celtic Scholars, John Lorne Campbell. The stories in the book include every type of tale found on South Uist, from Fingalian heroes and ghost stories to international folktales and humorous and historical local anecdotes. These tales of ancient kings, thrilling escapes, jealous stepmothers and magic spells are fascinating not only for their narrative power, but also their links with myths and legends from Ireland, Scandinavia, France and Greece. The Hebrideaen island of South Uist was one of the last places in Western Europe where the ancient art of Storytelling was still honoured and practised, and the style of these translations is at once original and hypnotic, reflecting the oral tradition at their source.

Book The Western Isles of Scotland

Download or read book The Western Isles of Scotland written by Francis Thompson and published by New Amsterdam Books. This book was released on 1988 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Butt of Lewis in the north to Barra Head in the south, the Western Islands form a unique part of Scotland: a rocky chain of islands 130 miles long, cut off from the Mainland by the Minch as effectively as the Channel separates Britain as a whole from the rest of Europe. Despite their diversity in history and landscape, Harris and Lewis, North and South Uist, Benbecula, Barra and the smaller islands have been united by the struggle against a sometimes harsh environment, and the first to maintain their independent economic and cultural identity whether against the 'Fife Adventurers' in 1598, or the land clearances of Victorian times which saw so many 'superfluous' Islanders dispatched overseas. But The Western Islands of Scotland is not a nostalgic look at a people in retreat. Illustrated with outstanding color and black-and-white photographs which emphasize the megaliths, castles, crafts and seamanship, Francis Thompson records a linguistic and cultural heritage which is now staging a forceful comeback after centuries of retreat. Many famous names have had connections with the Islands MacAulay and Gladstone among them while the traditions of the folktale and the ceilidh continue to produce successors to the Gaelic bard Ian Lom and the storyteller Donald MacPhee. Francis Thompson concludes with a look at the appeal of the Islands to outsiders, many of whom are attracted to crofting as a self-sufficient, "green" form of farming."

Book A Spy in the House of Years

Download or read book A Spy in the House of Years written by Giles Goodland and published by Giles Goodland. This book was released on 2001 with total page 132 pages. Goodland has a clutch of 1st prizes from major poetry competitions over the past 10 years, which is impressive enough, but when one considers that the judges of those competitions he has won include renowned writers such as Alasdair Grey, Fleur Adcock, Pauline Stainer and Robin Robertson, it is clear that he is a poet with great talent. A poet with a truly international appeal, Giles Goodland has had his work published in journals and poetry magazines all over the world including: Haiku International, Oxford Quarterly and Catharsis.

Book You Can t Tell the People

Download or read book You Can t Tell the People written by Georgina Bruni and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2011-12-12 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the casebook of the world's only officially recognized UFO encounter that took place in the UK in December 1980. Previous accounts of the Rendlesham Forest incident have been flawed: people with axes to grind and little access to primary sources and discreditable single eyewitness accounts. Georgina Bruni has had access to police, Ministry of Defence and US military sources and her casebook reveals fresh information on the incident and the possible alien encounter that ensued. It includes interviews with those involved as well as other never-before-reported incidents in the area. The casebook also reveals details of the aftermath and the harsh treatment meted out to those who wavered from the "don't ask, don't tell" line of officialdom. 'While twenty years have passed, she brings new light to this story that just won't go away...' Major General Gordon E. Williams, USAF (Retired)
