In this respect, it is representative of large areas in South Asia and in particular the ‚Greater Mekong Subregion’ (GMS) with its 300 Mio inhabitants. The GMS is an informal cooperation of Thailand, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Cambodia, Viet Nam, and the P.R. China (Yunnan and Guangxi Province) to promote the development of the region. While being far off from global developments and characterized by subsistence economy in the past, the region turned out to become one of the most dynamic areas worldwide. A new highway system connects the countries of the GMS, and the area is opened up to international markets. Cash crops such as rubber, which plays already a significant role in local economy, will become even more attractive and speed up land-use cover change (LUCC) with all its consequences for man and his environment. As a consequence of the dynamic development, socio-economic and cultural traditions are challenged, leading to a rapid change or even disappearance of traditional land-use systems. The consequences are manifold and affect people and their livelihood, as well as the century-old cultural landscape with its high (agro-)biodiversity.

Working with local governments, nongovernment organizations, women's groups, and professional associations, town-wide adaptation measures were defined by overlaying climate change projections on town plans and zoning schemes for strategic infrastructure. This publication captures valuable experience and lessons from the project.

It assessed the potential of solar, wind, biomass, and biogas as sources of renewable energy. Technical considerations include the degree and intensity of solar irradiation, average wind speeds, backup capacity of grid systems, availability and quality of agricultural land for biofuel crops, and animal manure concentrations for biogas digester systems. Most GMS governments have established plans for reaching these targets and have implemented policy, regulatory, and program measures to boost solar, wind, biomass, and biogas forms of renewable energy. Incentives for private sector investment in renewable energy are increasingly emphasized.

As Biswas and Tortajada (2011) have recently commented, water management in Asia will likely change more in the next twenty years than in the last 2000 years. Critical environmental trends include decreasing flows of water and sediment due to dam construction and increased water extraction, land use change (especially forest removal), encroachment and degradation of floodplain and wetland environments, increased water demand and concerns about water security, urban expansion and associated pollution of rivers and contamination of groundwater reserves. These challenges are being reframed by new approaches to water management which represent a transition from engineering-dominated approaches towards integrated water management, from technology transfer to adaptive technologies. The volume comprises an introduction and five chapters. Brierley and Callum reframe approaches to river repair within emerging theories of in ecology and earth science which regard nature as a complex adaptive system replete with inherent uncertainties.
