The right in access to and control over land and property is a determining factor in women's overall living conditions. In an effort to bring equal access to, and control over land between men and women, Zambia's Constitution recognises property rights and protects all individuals against deprivation of property.'Women and Land' is a unique and well written book.It provides a holistic picture of various issues surrounding women's acquisition of statutory land. The book looks at the available legal and institutional frame work and policies on gender and whether these have contributed to gender equality in statutory land acquisition or not. The book also looks at what women know about their land rights and the effects of this knowledge on statutory land acquisition. The book looks at the ways in which women are disadvantaged in their quest to acquire statutory land in Mumbwa district in Zambia.

Book A Place to Live

Download or read book A Place to Live written by Ann Schlyter and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 1996 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Be it a house or a makeshift, a shared or rented room, or a home of one's own, a place to live is central in the survival strategies of all urban households. In this volume the above authors explore the gendered experiences of housing and housing rights in African countries. The collection begins with articles on conceptual and methodological problems in gender-aware research. The following articles present cases showing a wide variety in housing experiences, a variety which depends on urban setting, tenure forms, stage in the life cycle or other factors. There are many differences but also many similarities in the pattern of women not having the same access and control over housing as men have. While women are often the main bread-winners, they are also the home-makers, in the literal sense that it is women who put intense efforts into making a place home.

Book Evaluation of Innovative Land Tools in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Evaluation of Innovative Land Tools in Sub Saharan Africa written by P. van Asperen and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2014-09-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sub-Saharan Africa is urbanizing rapidly, but most countries lack appropriate tools to manage their urban growth. This creates both risks and opportunities for prospective land holders, resulting in a tangle of insecure land rights and claims under multiple tenure systems. Recently, innovative land tools have been proposed and implemented to formalize land tenure. It is envisaged that tenure security for land holders will increase and in turn contribute to poverty reduction. This study evaluates such tools in three peri-urban areas in Lusaka (Zambia), Oshakati (Namibia) and Gaborone (Botswana), with a focus on the perspective of the land holders. The author concludes that the tools are to some extent pro-poor, and makes recommendations for further improvements. These innovative land tools are also considered a necessary addition to conventional and administration tools. This study makes valuable reading for academics, policy makers and practitioners within the land administration domain and related disciplines.
