Book The Law of the Land

Download or read book The Law of the Land written by John Opie and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book provides fascinating insights into how present-day American land legislation has evolved. In doing so the author identifies the many problems that the family farmer has had to face over the past two centuries at the hands of the weather, unstable product prices, and corrupt and venal politicians."--Journal of Agricultural Economics. "A provocative, learned, polemical contribution to the debate on the nature of the farm problem and the means to solve it. Throughout our history, Opie, a historian, convincingly argues, contradictory goals have produced contradictory policies that are the sources of our current problems."--Science. "This important volume offers a reinterpretation of public lands history as it relates to contemporary farm policy. . . . [Opie's] signal contribution is to examine and evaluate the many policy strands of a twentieth-century safety net designed by Congress to sustain the family farm."--Journal of American History "Bright, passionate, and entirely convincing."--Journal of Rural Studies "The Law of the Land has made a significant contribution to agricultural and public policy history by pointing out that American ideals have shaped policies and assigned roles that have often left farmers and farmland vulnerable."--Public Historian "The five years that have passed since this book was first published have been enough to conclude that John Opie can reconstruct the past and predict the future. . . . Many of the problems he foresaw have come to pass and some of the solutions he discussed have been adopted. . . . Anyone interested in the basic environment will find that this volume gives a clear picture of how we got to where we are today in the use and misuse of natural resources. . ."--Environmental History Review. A professor of history at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, John Opie is also director of the Center for Technology Studies and founding editor of Environmental History Review. His other publications include Ogallala: Water for a Dry Land (Nebraska 1993).

Book The Agricultural Act of 2014

Download or read book The Agricultural Act of 2014 written by Daniel Villar (Economist) and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conservation Reserve Program is a voluntary land conservation program established in 1985. Its long term goal is to improve water quality, prevent soil erosion, and reduce loss of wildlife habitat through the removal of environmentally sensitive lands from agricultural production. The contracts through the Farm Service Administration (FSA) provide yearly rental payments to farmers who enroll in the program. These contracts are ten to fifteen years in length and insure improvements in environmental health and quality through the conversion of agricultural land back to natural or semi-natural vegetative cover.

Book U S Farmland Ownership Tenure and Transfer

Download or read book U S Farmland Ownership Tenure and Transfer written by Daniel Bigelow and published by . This book was released on 2016-09-28 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farmland tenure shapes many farm decisions, including those related to production, conservation, and succession planning. The relatively advanced age of many farmers raises questions abut land ownership, especially how land will be transferred to the next generation of agricultural landowners and operators. This study provides a descriptive baseline analysis of land ownership and then focuses on more detailed aspects of land tenure, including non-operator landlords, rental agreements, the acquisition and transfer of land, and how decisionmaking is shared by landlords and their tenants. The report is designed to support broad discussions related to agricultural land ownership and to provide a starting point for more detailed statistical analysis. Figures and tables. This is a print on demand report.

Book Keeping it in the Family

Download or read book Keeping it in the Family written by John R. Baker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the largest group of natural resource managers on the planet, farmers are at the interface of the changing relationship between humans and the environment. Typically organised around what might be considered the most basic of social units, for generations the family farm has survived wide-ranging exogenous challenges, frequently preserving the line of succession to the next of kin. Now as we face major questions about how we use land and the impact of our land use on the global environment, farming once again faces a challenging and uncertain future. This book draws on the experiences of farmers in Australia, New Zealand, North America, Japan and the EU to examine the special features of family farms and, in particular, the tradition of succession which has enabled them to continue to have such a strong presence in the world today.

Download or read book Land Retirement Program Design in the Presence of Crop Insurance Subsidies written by David A. Hennessy and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. federal government implements environmental, biofuels and crop insurance programs that influence land use. They are not well integrated in that cost savings from crop insurance subsidies are not acknowledged when screening land for retirement or when calculating the cost of land retirement programs. We identify and evaluate an optimal benefit index for enrollment in a land retirement program that includes a sub-index to rank land according to insurance subsidy savings. All else equal, land ranked higher in the Lorenz stochastic order should be retired first.
