Book excerpt: This paper aims to study the relationship between women's land ownership and household food security in Tanzania, using data from three waves of the Tanzanian National Panel Survey. The analysis focuses on the Household Dietary Diversity Scale (HDDS) as a measure of food security, and we categorize land ownership by gender and whether it is solely or jointly owned. Additionally, we examine the impact of the gendered division of crop cultivation on household food security, distinguishing between cash crops and food crops. We estimate several fixed-effects specifications and perform a heterogeneity analysis to disentangle the effects of women's land ownership across households with varying levels of dependence on home-produced food. The findings reveal that women's land ownership significantly influences household dietary diversity. Specifically, women's sole ownership of food crops and joint ownership of cash crops have positive effects on household food security, especially for households reliant on purchased food. These results underscore the importance of women's ownership of income-generating crops in enhancing food security. Overall, this research provides valuable insights for policymakers, emphasizing the significance of women's land ownership in driving household food security in Tanzania. By uncovering the positive impacts of women's land ownership, the study highlights the importance of gender equity in agricultural systems and the potential for women's empowerment to foster sustainable development and food security.

Book excerpt: Expanding on the "Right to the City" philosophy of Henri Lefebvre, Black food geographies focus on the ways in which African-Americans navigated oppressive food and built environments, historically and presently, while simultaneously trying to build a version of community food security (CFS) unique to that neighborhood. This "Right to the City" is challenged by settler colonialism and racial capitalism, two political and social structures that control spatial behaviors, including a neighborhood's access to quality food. One way to counteract that is ownership of the land and community-based food production via urban agricultural (UA) enterprises. The following study applies a mixed-methods approach to two Ohio cities--Toledo and Dayton--as case studies to understand the socioeconomic and demographic implications of concentrated municipal-owned vacant parcels, exacerbated by Land Bank and City demolitions, within majority African-American neighborhoods. It justifies how UA is used as a remedy for not only strengthening the local food system and repurposing vacant land, but also, as an empowerment mechanism for said communities, leading to self-sufficiency using Collective Action and Community Resilience (CACR) as a guide. Additionally, it revealed the ways in which Land Banks, and indirectly the city, can be a community-based asset to the growth of UA in the formation of an equitable CFS model that acknowledges the African-American's version of the "Right to the City." Using municipal-owned vacant land transfers between 2010 and 2018, and the 2014 & 2018 5-year American Community Survey (ACS) Census, results indicated higher rates of land vacancies are mostly found in majority African-American neighborhoods, with higher household poverty, increased food assistance recipients, greater household unemployment, and low private vehicle ownership. These relationships were statistically significant out of the initial ten variables. Three additional statistically significant variables were found in Toledo--rate of disability and senior population for 2014, and Bachelor's Degree attainment for 2018. Quantitative results, from 53 virtual interviews between the two cities, established three main concepts towards race and UA intersection: Land Banks as Advocate and Consultant, AgriCULTURE, and Developing Black Urban Agrarianism. These findings support the need and desire for a comprehensive and strategic urban food production system beginning with land access via the Land Bank, with realistic long-term metrics in the form of community land trusts, food hubs in proximity to the urban core, and a "Champion(s)" to lead this effort across both cities.

The scope of the book is both local and multi-scalar. The gendered resilience framework, illustrated here with detailed case studies from semi-arid Kenya, is shown to be suitable for use in analysis in other geographic regions and across disciplines. The book examines the importance of gender equity to the strengthening of socio-ecological resilience. Case studies reflect multidisciplinary perspectives and focus on a range of issues, from microfinance to informal seed systems. The book’s gender perspective also incorporates consideration of age or generational relations and cultural dimensions in order to embrace the complexity of existing socio-economic realities in rural farming communities. The issue of succession of farmland has become a general concern, both to farmers and to researchers focused on building resilient farming systems. Building resilience here is shown to involve strengthening households’ and communities’ overall livelihood capabilities in the face of ongoing climate change, global market volatility and political instability.

Fears about societal insecurity due to food price increases and hunger, grave scenarios regarding the effects of climate change and general uncertainty about the impacts of investments in biofuels and so-call “land grabbing” on food prices and availability have meant that food security is now recognised as being a multifaceted challenge. This book is unique in that it will bring together analyses of these different factors that impact on food security. This volume will describe a range of different perspectives on food security, with an emphasis on the various meanings that are applied to food security “crisis”. The challenges to be reviewed include market volatility, climate change and state fragility. Analyses of responses to food security crises and risk will cover rural and urban contexts, arenas of national policy formation and global food regimes, and investment in land and productive technologies. This book is unique in two respects. First, it takes a step back from the normative literature focused on specific factors of, for example, climate change, agricultural production or market volatility to look instead at the dynamic interplay between these new challenges. It helps readers to understand that food security is not one discourse, but is rather related to how these different factors generate multiple risks and opportunities. Second, through the case studies the book particularly emphasises how these factors come together at local levels as farmers, entrepreneurs, consumers, local government officials and others are making key decisions about what will be done to address food security and whose food security will be given priority. The book will explore how food production and consumption is embedded in powerful political and market forces and how these influence local actions.

Book excerpt: While numerous studies exist that evaluate the impacts of land reform on household investment behavior, land productivity, and land rental market activities, the literature is thin in terms of showing the direct food securities impacts of land tenure reforms. This study, thus, uses five rounds of household panel data from Tigray, Ethiopia, collected in the period 1998–2010 to assess the impacts of a land registration and certification program that aimed to strengthen tenure security and how it has contributed to increased food availability and thus food security in this food-deficit region. Our first survey took place just a year before the intervention (the land certification program). Our panel data in combination with the “years of certificate ownership” variable allow us to assess the dynamic impacts on food (calorie) availability of strengthened tenure security. Anthropometric data also allow us to assess potential child nutrition impacts of the reform 8–12 years after its implementation. Results show that land certification appears to have contributed to enhanced calorie availability (calorie intake), and more so for female-headed households, either through enhanced land rental market participation or increased investment and productivity on owner-operated land. Results also show that members of households that accessed additional land through the land rental market had a significantly higher body mass index. Though results show that land rental market participation is enhancing production efficiency, high transaction costs in that market suggest there are still unrealized gains from trade. Thus, the recent restrictive regional land law that allows for only short-term rental contracts and does not allow more than 50 percent of land to be rented out may threaten future tenure security and may undermine the benefits from the existing tenure reform.

Updated estimates show the number of people who suffer from hunger has been growing over the past three years, returning to prevailing levels from almost a decade ago. Although progress continues to be made in reducing child stunting, over 22 percent of children under five years of age are still affected. Other forms of malnutrition are also growing: adult obesity continues to increase in countries irrespective of their income levels, and many countries are coping with multiple forms of malnutrition at the same time – overweight and obesity, as well as anaemia in women, and child stunting and wasting.
