Download or read book Land Settlement Policies and Population Redistribution in Developing Countries written by A. S. Oberai and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988-01-26 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land Settlement Policies and Population Redistribution in Developing Countries provides a comparative analysis, initiated by the International Labour Office, of land settlement policies and programs in developing countries under various socioeconomic conditions. It reports the findings of nine case studies conducted in countries which have established resettlement schemes. The major focus of the studies is the identification of the factors that have contributed to the success or failure of resettlement schemes from the point of view of the populations concerned--in relation to the original objectives of the policymakers--and with respect to development objectives other than population distribution.

Book excerpt: In this bibliography an attempt has been made to collect references to agricultural land settlement in the United States and in foreign countries which are likely to be useful to those interested in the literature of subsistence homesteads, small holdings, and land settlement as relief for unemployment. Many references to publications on the general subject of land settlement have been included, but in selecting the references the emphasis has been placed chiefly on schemes leading to the eventual ownership of a small farm or holding which will provide either partial or complete employment for the owner.

Book Land Reform in Small Island Developing States

Download or read book Land Reform in Small Island Developing States written by Karl John and published by Virtualbookworm Publishing. This book was released on 2006-02 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent times, the spotlight of international media attention has often focused on problems which have their roots in the inequitable distribution of agricultural land - still a characteristic of many developing countries. For example, media coverage of the social unrest that has beset Zimbabwe since the closing years of the twentieth century has been relentless. Large plantations still exist in the Caribbean - a legacy of the erstwhile economic importance of sugar to the region. However, on several islands, the traditionally highly skewed pattern of land distribution has been successfully reformed - in most cases without recourse to violence and confiscation in a revolutionary context. In St. Vincent, the demise of the plantation and the emergence of an independent peasantry are attributable, to a significant degree, to public policy formulated and implemented over a period of one hundred years. Karl John's study chronicles the historical course of these official interventions aimed at reforming the land tenure structure in this small island developing state. The work pays particular attention to the motives for the policies and strategies adopted for land reform, critically evaluates the planning and implementation of related programs and projects, and assesses the role of prevailing economic, social and political forces in both limiting and enabling their success.

Book Rural Settlement and Land Use

Download or read book Rural Settlement and Land Use written by Marcus Felson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To a remarkable extent, students of location problems have fastened attention upon industrial and urban matters rather than upon agricultural and rural affairs. The preponderance of the former studies undoubtedly reflects the relative importance of the manufacturing and commercial sectors of the technically more advanced countries where most students of location matters have in the past resided. Perhaps it has also seemed that the locational problems posed by city life and factory employment are more amenable than those of the countryside to rigorous analysis.
