Book Writing the Land Writing Humanity

Download or read book Writing the Land Writing Humanity written by Charles M. Pigott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-12 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maya Literary Renaissance is a growing yet little-known literary phenomenon that can redefine our understanding of "literature" universally. By analyzing eight representative texts of this new and vibrant literary movement, the book argues that the texts present literature as a trans-species phenomenon that is not reducible only to human creativity. Based on detailed textual analysis of the literature in both Maya and Spanish as well as first-hand conversations with the writers themselves, the book develops the first conceptual map of how literature constantly emerges from wider creative patterns in nature. This process, defined as literary inhabitation, is explained by synthesizing core Maya cultural concepts with diverse philosophical, literary, anthropological and biological theories. In the context of the Yucatan Peninsula, where the texts come from, literary inhabitation is presented as an integral part of bioregional becoming, the evolution of the Peninsula as a constantly unfolding dialogue.

Book Ritual Identity and the Mayan Diaspora

Download or read book Ritual Identity and the Mayan Diaspora written by Nancy J. Wellmeier and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1998 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the lives and the continuing ritual traditions of the Mayas who live in the United States. Focusing on a predominantly Maya town in rural Florida, it shows how members of this ancient Central American civilization use their religious tradition to maintain their ethnic identity in an unfamiliar environment. Bringing together studies of Mesoamerican fiesta or cargo systems, religious ritual and migration studies, this interdisciplinary work describes the religious traditions of indigenous Guatemala, the crisis migration of the 1980s, and the Mayas' daily life in the United States, including Maya women's reflections on their new challenges. The book is unique in its focus on the transfer of the fiesta cycle to the diaspora and its analysis of the behind-the-scenes aspects of ritual. The rise of leadership, contested interpretations of ethnic identity, choices about symbolic representation, and maintenance of ties to villages of origin all take place in the context of organizing public ritual events. Through these strategies, the Maya people not only cope materially and spiritually with the chaotic experience of uprootedness, but find ways to strengthen their unique identity. Bibliography. Book Theories of the Self Race and Essentialization in Buddhism

Download or read book Theories of the Self Race and Essentialization in Buddhism written by Ryan Anningson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-29 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes Buddhist discussions of the Aryan myth and scientific racism and the ways in which this conversation reshaped Buddhism in the United States, and globally. The book traces the development of notions of Aryanism in Buddhism through Buddhist publications from 1899-1957, focusing on this so-called "yellow peril," or historical racist views in the United States of an Asian "other." During this time period in America, the Aryan myth was considered to be scientific fact, and Buddhists were able to capitalize on this idea throughout a global publishing network of books, magazines, and academic work which helped to transform the presentation of Buddhism into the "Aryan religion." Following narratives regarding colonialism and the development of the Aryan myth, Buddhists challenged these dominant tropes: they combined emic discussions about the "Aryan" myth and comparisons of Buddhism and science, in order to disprove colonial tropes of "Western" dominance, and suggest that Buddhism represented a superior tradition in world historical development. The author argues that this presentation of a Buddhist tradition of superiority helped to create space for Buddhism within the American religious landscape. The book will be of interest to academics working on Buddhism, race and religion, and American religious history.

Book The Boundless Singing Links of Body and Spirit of the Mexican Mayans Part I

Download or read book The Boundless Singing Links of Body and Spirit of the Mexican Mayans Part I written by Mira Omerzel - Mirit, PH D and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-10 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mayan culture is perhaps one of the most interesting and mysterious civilisations to have existed on Earth, but one which has sunk into the darkness of oblivion. That is why the ancient Mayans continue to intrigue us today. Their ancient wisdom, shrouded in a mysterious symbolism, reveals an extraordinary grandeur of spirit. It still inspires us today, showing us the way into the broader consciousness of the new millennium. As a musician, scientist and sound therapist - a medium for the transfer of cosmic life energy, as well as a guide across different levels of consciousness, Mirit tries to open the curtains of the Mayan stage of life, primarily through the lens of sound and boundless consciousness. The ancient consciousness of the Mayans is increasingly becoming not only the consciousness of the new times, the new Earth, but also the consciousness of a better and more conscious life. Our values, which are constantly changing, are once again turning to the wisdom of the ancient times. The past gives meaning to and reinvigorates the future. A new human being is now being born - more joyful and spiritually less impoverished. With the boundless vastness of their consciousness, Mayan teachings put sound and music into a different perspective - to the altar of consecration and sacredness. Due to its comprehensiveness, the book about Mayan material and spiritual culture is published in two parts, although its content represents one indivisible whole and its chapters complement each other. In the first part, the author explains the genesis and the sacred book Popol Vuh from a spiritual perspective. She reveals the way of ascending the nine dimensions of the axis of consciousness (as the folk tradition would put it) - ascending through the material and non-material world and nine levels of wholeness and perfection. Mirit describes: ancient Mayan rituals, such as rain calling ceremony, the blessing on the top of the sacred tree during fire ceremonies, the symbolism of the sacred snake and the sacred tree, which is the axis of consciousness. She goes on to explore: the meaning of sacred places and temples and the magic of the Sun, the Earth, the planets and stars, the priestly ball game, the power of mental-energy imprints in the etheric body and body cells, the symbolism of blood, and, principally, the revolution of a centred consciousness, of wholeness, as well as the road to the Silent knowledge of the Universe. Climbing the pyramid is a symbol of ascending through spiritual levels, through the axis of consciousness. Such a journey to the top - to the Silence - is the goal of the ancient spiritual warriors and the purpose of their life's quest. The old rigid mindset must give way to the dignity of oneness with all levels of reality and with all existing forms, or beings. Thousands of years ago, the ancient Mayans consciously lived this philosophy of aligning the mind, soul and heart, which brings out a resonance with the sacred snake of the inaudible waves of energy and sound. Ancient Mayans persistently sought to rise above the limitations of time and space and attain the extraordinary abilities of galactic meta-human beings, of complete and awakened beings who have returned to their origin and to the Centre.

Book A Critical Analysis of Bhima Bhoi and the Mahima Cult

Download or read book A Critical Analysis of Bhima Bhoi and the Mahima Cult written by Nishamani Kar and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Critical Analysis of Bhima Bhoi and the Mahima Cult is a rare compendium of insightful essays by eminent Indian scholars on the Mahima Cult, its genesis, and its growth. The volume focuses on Bhima Bhoi, the poet-philosopher and the prime interlocutor of the Renegade Faith, who started a revolt from below to champion human rights. To critically appreciate the Saint-poet Bhima Bhoi and the Mahima Cult (Dharma of Glory), the history of the 19th-century Indian sociocultural system, especially that of Odisha and its adjoining states, needs to be reconstructed. Since there is no surviving oral and written text authored by the founder of the cult, Mahima Swami, it is only the unlettered genius Bhima Bhoi, who produced innumerable prayers, hymns, and poetic recitals of profound philosophical import, which made him the legend, the poet-archivist, and historiographer of the Mahima Cult. Bhima was simultaneously the poet of the soul and the soil, who used theology and social experience to provide a supportive sub-structure to a transcendent, ecstatic vision. This volume asserts that Mahima Dharma is an autochthonous reform movement and a regional variation of the Indian Bhakti tradition and mystical poetry.
