Book Land and Marine Hydrogeology

Download or read book Land and Marine Hydrogeology written by M. Taniguchi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-12-09 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents an effort to bring together communities of land-based hydrogeology and marine hydrogeology. The issues of submarine groundwater discharge and its opposite phenomenon of seawater invasion are discussed in this book from the geophysical, geochemical, biological, and engineering perspectives. This is where land hydrogeology and marine hydrogeology overlap. Submarine groundwater discharge is a rapidly developing research field. The SCOR and LOICZ of the IGBP have recently established a working group for this research. IASPO and IAHS under IUGG also recently formed a new joint committee "Seawater/Groundwater Interactions" to collaborate with oceanographers and hydrologists. The other articles introduce frontier research topics in more typical land and marine environments, such as fluid flow in karst aquifers, the biological aspects of fluids in sedimentary basins and submarine sedimentary formations, respectively, and vigorous fluid flow in subsea formations and their significance in global tectonics. Geochemical characteristics of hydrothermal activities at a number of active continental margins are also reviewed, and multidisciplinary geophysical constraints of the permeability of young igneous oceanic crust are summarized. A variety of driving mechanisms for fluid flow is discussed in land and subsea formations; terrestrial hydraulic gradient, buoyancy driven free convection, tidally induced flow, flow induced by tectonic strain, flow due to sediment compaction.

Book Submarine Groundwater

Download or read book Submarine Groundwater written by Igor S. Zektser and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-09-29 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable management of water resources is quickly increasing in importance on a global scale. An important piece of the puzzle is the characterization of marine water and determining its importance to geochemical budgets. To do this, submarine groundwater discharges must be carefully studied. Comprehensively exploring the subject, Submarine Groundwater presents quantitative data relating groundwater contribution to the water/salt balance of regional and global bodies of water. The authors examine different data-supported methods for studying submarine groundwater flow and discharge through case studies contributed by leading international scientists. They discuss the maintenance of optimal water, salt, temperature and hydrobiological regimes of inland seas and large lakes. The book covers subsurface water exchange between the land and sea as well as groundwater discharge to the seas. It also provides a review of experimental methods and numerical modeling that can be used for the evaluation of specific discharge data and the effect of groundwater on the salt balance of seas and oceans. Defining the field of marine hydrogeology as a science that studies submarine groundwater, its properties, circulation, and distribution, Submarine Groundwater delineates the role of quantitative assessment of subsurface water exchange between land and sea in predicting its changes under the influence of natural factors and human activity. It provides a framework for assessing different methods and making the best choice for various situations.

Book Environmental Hydrogeology

Download or read book Environmental Hydrogeology written by Philip E. LaMoreaux and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-12-29 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looming global threats such as overpopulation, pollution, ozone depletion, and other major risks to the planet have created an increasing need for well-trained, experienced geoscientists who understand environmental hydrology and can apply its precepts to tackle these intimidating planetary problems. Written by the senior staff of a respected environmental consulting firm, Environmental Hydrogeology is a complete introduction to this fast-growing field. Geared to both practicing geoscientists and students, it provides a thorough examination of the role of environmental hydrogeology in solving today's challenging environmental problems, from local issues to global perils. Topics covered include the geological aspects of disposal sites, surface water hydrology, groundwater hydrology and wells, environmental impacts and the hydrological system, and more. This text/reference also includes types, sources, and properties of waste products, and proposes waste management programs for groundwater protection. The accompanying TPASCAL modeling software includes a solved problem to demonstrate the use of this powerful program.
