Book excerpt: Land and Labour Relations in South-West Bangladesh documents the ambiguities and limitations of applying rigid theoretical concepts in defining labor, particularly in the context of a South Asian agrarian economy. The author demonstrates that sources of labor are not uniform, and that labor in the rural context is not a homogeneous commodity. Identification of laborers or groups with a common interest does not necessarily fit into the formal definition of laborers based on relationships of possession and separation from the means of production. On the contrary, based on empirical research, the study suggests that defining and identifying the class of laborer demands a critical analysis of the economic and political relations which bind them into the same procession of production and reproduction.

Book excerpt: Coercion and Wage Labour presents novel histories of people who experienced physical, social, political or cultural compulsion in the course of paid work. Broad in scope, the chapters examine diverse areas of work including textile production, war industries, civil service and domestic labour, in contexts from the Middle Ages to the present day. They demonstrate that wages have consistently shaped working people’s experiences, and failed to protect workers from coercion. Instead, wages emerge as versatile tools to bind, control, and exploit workers. Remuneration mirrors the distribution of power in labour relations, often separating employers physically and emotionally from their employees, and disguising coercion. The book makes historical narratives accessible for interdisciplinary audiences. Book excerpt: Though land is an important component of eco-system, there remains very little landscape on earth in their natural state especially because of rapid urbanization and industrialization since the start of civilization. As a result, changes of land use- forest into farmland, farmland into periphery- have attracted global concern. Though lands of south-west region were generally used for rice farming since the middle of 20th century, polderization project of Bangladesh during 1970s caused major changes in land use pattern.The study area being close to river Hariavanga, shrimp farming has been observed to be predominant while youngs are more interested in shrimp farming than in any other land use alternatives. Analysis shows that cost free irrigation for shrimp farming as well as higher profit, lower cost and available inputs are the major factors of increased shrimp farming in the study area. The study also finds that if rice can be cultivated thrice per year then shrimp is less attractive while rare training facilities for the rice farmers are found to cause dissatisfaction and conversion of rice land into shrimp.Whatever be the determinants, mass awareness should be emphasized much.

In Threatening Dystopias, Kasia Paprocki investigates the politics of climate change adaptation throughout the South Asian nation. Drawing on ethnographic and archival fieldwork, she engages with developers, policy makers, scientists, farmers, and rural migrants to show how Bangladeshi and global elites ignore the history of landscape transformation and its attendant political conflicts. Paprocki looks at how groups craft economic narratives and strategies that redistribute power and resources away from peasant communities. Although these groups claim that increased production of export commodities will reframe the threat of climate change into an opportunity for economic development and growth, the reality is not so simple. For the country's rural poor, these promises ring hollow.
