Book Land and Freedom Vol 26

Download or read book Land and Freedom Vol 26 written by Joseph Dana Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Land and Freedom, Vol. 26: July-August, 1926 And now! After forty years what are conditions today? There is not the slightest excuse for ignoring the fact that so far as having any influence on public policies is con cerned, there is no advance over 1886 in understanding, or will to apply, the truths then proclaimed by Henry George and his disciples. Many of the latter became estranged or discouraged: so-called labor leaders returned to their former political parties: even among those entitled to be termed Single Taxers because they were doing something to bring about the adoption of the Single Tax there arose grave differences of opinion concerning policies. Looking backward over the political movements with which many of those active in the 1886 campaign subsequently allied themselves, is only to recall a long history of futility and failure. Grover Cleveland, W. J. Bryan, W. R. Hearst, Tom Watson, Robert M. La Follette, were some of those supported in the vain expectation that in some way the Single Tax cause would be advanced. Even William H. Taft, President of the United States, found Single Tax supporters for his corrupt and dishonorable scheme for Progress and Poverty and 3 other works. Buying newspaper support for his discredited administra tion by putting print paper on the free list. Mistakes? Yes, many of them. As was to have been expected, with a fallible and imperfect humanity. But the truths affirmed forty years ago are still eternally true, and more urgently needed for the welfare of mankind. Will another forty years see greater advancement toward their recognition? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Land and Freedom, 1927, Vol. 27 In paying his tribute to the founder of the movement the chairman (mr. Hobbs) said he looked upon Henry George as the greatest reformer since the time of Christ. Although his enemies had not crucified him they would gladly have destroyed his work. He blazed a pathway of intelligence through the injustice from which mankind had suffered for many ages. His works shone as a beacon light, warning the people of the social dangers around them brought about by the curse of land monopoly. The Assistant Secretary has also helped a good deal in taking charge of the work while the Secretary (mr. A. G. Huie) conducted a campaign round the country, the biggest he has yet undertaken. He travelled in a motor car which was presented to the League by a friend some time ago, he delivered speeches at all the leading towns along the route, which he mostly reported himself, the reports being generally published by the local press. On previous country tours he used to hire a hall, arrange for a chairman, and engage a bellman, but he soon found that he could get a better crowd at a good street corner without any expense except that of advertising the meet ing. Everywhere, of course, he sold the Standard, renew ing subscriptions and getting new ones. He would have done still better work as a propagandist had he arranged beforehand with someone in the towns he was to visit to distribute tracts and other literature free and sell the Standard while he was preaching the word. This should certainly be done in connection with the next coun try tour. However, it was a great success. It lasted about twelve weeks, during which time 46 country towns were visited and addressed, 2186 miles were covered by car and 1385 by train, a large number of the 68 newspapers published in the districts visited were supplied with reports while others supplied themselves, over 500 new subscribers were obtained for the Standard in addition to nearly 300 renewals, and more than 500 copies of Henry George's anti-poverty addresses delivered in Sydney were sold - altogether a very memorable tour. Book Land and Freedom

Download or read book Land and Freedom written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Land and Freedom, Vol. 28 "Buy a Lot in North Hollywood now. Do you Want People to Work for you? Then Invest in Our Lots and Get the Reflected Value of all the Community does for us. Do you Want to Share in the Wages of all North Hollywood Workmen? The Profits of its Store Keepers? Even the Car Fares Paid by the Shop Girls on Their Way to and from Work? You Wont have to Do a Thing. By and by you will be Able to Live on What Other People do. Now is the Opportunity to Live a Life of Ease and Perhaps Even of Luxury, and, Without Contributing to the Prosperity of the Community, Get Most or all of this Prosperity." Such an advertisement is only a little more frank and candid than the one that lies before us. We have merely reduced its terms, and it is capable of further reduetto ad absurdum. Concealed in its insidious appeal to avarice and ignorance is the element of indifference to a great social wrong that takes from those who labor the wealth they create for the benefit of the idlers. Can civilization be anything but what it is when, rooted in laws and custom, this great wrong persists? Prof. Lee Bidgood, of the Department of Political Economy in the University of Alabama, is the author of a book used in his classes, and in it (page 152) he says: "Again Single Taxers are incorrect in supposing that increase in value without the effort of the owner - the unearned increment - is peculiar to land. We sec such increase going on everywhere in respect to all sorts of property. The ethical basis of the Single Tax is therefore fallacious." So that ends it. If there is any species of property that increases in value outside of old books, old violins, old wines, and old paintings, the Professor fails to indicate them. "All sorts of property," says the Professor. That is pretty inclusive. Yet "all sorts of property" tend to disintegration and decay. Houses built thirty years if not constantly renovated have arrived at their hour of dissolution. Machinery is shorter lived. Clothes shorter yet. Foods shorter still, unless we except plum pudding. Ah, plum pudding! The unearned increment in plum pudding has eluded the Professor. Yet it supplies another fine excuse for not taking for public purposes the socially created land values of the community! But even plum pudding is a product of labor. It can, unlike land, be produced ad libitum. That is the reason why labor products do not increase in value. To urge the increase in value that comes to a few things which are not commodities and owe their value - always fluctuating and uncertain - to the vanity and wealth of collectors - looks like a joke or an evasion. And it is a joke. It is a joke on the Professor. Delivered with the air of an oracle it may have an effect on some of the youthful minds Prof. Bidgood teaches. But we call on his students to challenge this contention. He is teaching economics - the values he no doubt has in mind, values only to the virtuoso, are not the values which enter into the science of economics. Concerning Land Ownership A Lthough Henry George is a master of the art of lucid exposition of economic subjects, it would be idle to deny that there has been some misunderstanding of the meaning to be attached to certain phrases which he uses in describing the evil which he finds to lie at the root of social injustice and which paralyses all attempts to ameliorate social conditions as long as the fundamental error lies unremedied. This evil he finds to be "private property in land," or "private ownership of land," because such property or ownership, if carried to its logical conclusion, permits the exclusion of all persons not owning land from their natural right to live by the application of their labor to land. Many people jump to the conclusion that the only alternatives to private ownership of land are public ownership of land or common ownership of land, and are disposed to believe that so far as land is c...

Book Bilingual Public Schooling in the United States

Download or read book Bilingual Public Schooling in the United States written by P. Ramsey and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-03-29 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of one of the most contentious educational issues in America examines bilingual instruction in the United States from the common school era to the recent federal involvement in the 1960s and 1970s. Drawing from school reports, student narratives, legal resources, policy documents, and other primary sources, the work teases out the underlying agendas and patterns in bilingual schooling during much of America s history. The study demonstrates clearly how the broader context - the cultural, intellectual, religious, demographic, economic, and political forces - shaped the contours of dual-language instruction in America between the 1840s and 1960s. Ramsey s work fills a crucial void in the educational literature and addresses not only historians, linguists, and bilingual scholars, but also policymakers and practitioners in the field.
