Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lancashire Characters and Places My ears are soothed by no melodious measures, No work of sculptor charms my longing gaze, N o painter thrills me with exalted pleasures, But books and thought have cheered my darkest days. Books and thought were the solace to which he turned from the meaner surroundings of his life, and indeed all his poetry shows the reflective and contemplative cast of his mind. His rhythm and rhyme are faultless he has'a mas culine power of expression; and besides the fulness and freshness of his pictures, drawn as they are chiefly from Nature, his skill in antithesis is equally evinced; whilst in the gift of alliteration, not forced or carried to a tiresome excess, he excels in a remarkable degree. The harmony of his lines is something phenomenal, showing a perfection of taste not easily acquired even under favourable conditions. If he is not a deep thinker, at least he is clear and to be understood; and in his best productions he has always a thought to express and a lesson to enforce. In his younger days, before the taint of drunkenness had blighted his life, and despite his poverty, his soul was bright with the noblest aspirations. Hours with the Muses is aglow with evidences in proof of this. The sentiment of his lines. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A List of Lancashire Authors: With Brief Biographical and Bibliographical Notes The work owes its origin to the President of the Manchester Literary Club, Mr. J. H. Nodal, who laid down its general plan and undertook the preliminary labour. His list was afterwards greatly enlarged by Mr. Wm. E. A. Axon, the Club's Honorary Secretary. Various circumstances, however, prevented those gentlemen from going on with the work, and ultimately, in November, 1875, the Editor undertook the revision and preparation of the list for the press. Under his hands the catalogue of between 500 and 600 names has increased to the roll of about writers, which is now presented to the reader. Book The Danes in Lancashire and Yorkshire Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Danes in Lancashire and Yorkshire Classic Reprint written by S. W. Partington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Danes in Lancashire and Yorkshire The story of the 'childhood of our race' wh'o inhabited the counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire before the Norman Conquest, is an almost blank page to the popular reader of to-day. The last invaders of our shores, whom we designate as the Danes and Norsemen, were not the least important of our ancestors. The History of their daring adventures, crafts and customs, beliefs and character, with the surviving traces in our language and laws, form the subject of this book. From the evidence of relics, and of existing customs and traditions, we trace their thought and actions, their first steps in speech and handicraft, and the development of their religious conceptions. Our education authorities have realized the fact that Local Names contain a fund of history and meaning which appeals to the young as well as to the adults; and the county committees have been well advised to recommend the teaching of History and Geography from local features and events. Some articles written by the late Mr. John Just, m.a., of Bury, on our early races, and elements of our language and dialect, formed the incentive to the writer to continue the story Of our Danish ancestors. To the following writers we are indebted for many facts and quotations: H. Colley March, Esq., M.D W. G. Collingwood, Scandinavian Britain W. S. From the Grist Yate, by the main road to Roch dale, a winding horse-way, paved with stones set on edge, led down the steep bank and pointed to the sequestered spot where for ages the clack of the hopper and the plash of the mill wheel had usurped a noisy and undisputed possession. Book An Illustrated Itinerary of the County of Lancaster Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Illustrated Itinerary of the County of Lancaster Classic Reprint written by Cyrus Redding and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Illustrated Itinerary of the County of Lancaster In the hundreds of Blackburn and Rochdale, still keeping upon the eastern border, there are scenes which are very beautiful, particularly on the banks of the Ribble; but these are confined to a few particular spots, and are not sufficiently extensive to impart their own character to the county generally. The western part of Lancashire, from Lancaster to the banks of the Mersey, is flat and uninteresting, and near the sea exhibits more than ordinary want of the finer sea-shore character. No bold rocks and towering cliffs mark the ocean boundary; but in their place are treeless wastes, bleak moors, and unprofitable and wearisome sands. It will thus be seen that the elevated land is confined to the eastern side, south of Furness, - that the western is level; and that though here and there detached portions of the surface are interesting and even beautiful, they are not numerous enough to class the surface south of the sands very high in picturesque beauty any more than in fertility of production. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Kid: With Other London and Lancashire Sketches All these sketches may claim to be true, for there is not an action recorded, hardly a phrase repeated, in any one of them which is not taken from life. Yet all are fiction, for the characters are not photographs but composite pictures with traits from more than one original in each. Old friends and fellow-workers will recognize familiar scenes and the echoes of old battles. I hope they will feel no inclination to charge me with having dealt hardly with old Mission friends now long dead, or with having set down aught in malice. My thanks are due to the Editor of the Manchester Guardian for permission to republish the sketches, which appeared in his columns.
