Book Lameness of the Horse Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lameness of the Horse Classic Reprint written by J. V. Lacroix and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lameness of the Horse All that can be known on the subject of lameness, is founded on knowledge of anatomy and of the physiology of locomotion. Without such knowledge, no one can master the principles of the diagnosis of lameness. However, it must be assumed that the readers are informed on these subjects, as it is impossible to include this fundamental instruction in a work so brief as this one. The technic of certain operative or corrective procedures, has been described at length only where such methods are not generally employed. Where there is no departure from the usual methods, treatment that is essentially within the domain of surgery or practice is not given in specific detail. Realizing the need for a treatise in the English language dealing with diagnosis and treatment of lameness, the author undertook the preparation of this manuscript. That the difficulties of depicting by means of word-pictures, the symptoms evinced in baffling cases of lameness, presented themselves in due course of writing, it is needless to say. It is hoped that this volume will serve its readers to the end that the handling of cases of lameness will become a more satisfactory and successful part of their work; that both the practitioner and his clients may profit thereby; and last but by no means least, that the horse, which has given such incalculable service to mankind and is deserving of a more concrete reward, will be benefited by the application of the principles herein outlined. In addition to the consultation of standard works bearing on various phases of the subject of lameness, the author wishes to thankfully acknowledge helpful advice and assistance received from the publisher. Dr. D. I. Campbell; to appreciatively credit Drs. L. A. Merillat, A. Trickett and F. F. Brown for valuable suggestions given from time to time. Particular acknowledgment is made to Dr. Septimus Sisson, author, and W. B. Saunders Co., publishers of The Anatomy of Domestic Animals, for permission to use a number of illustrations from that work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Clinical Diagnosis of Lameness in the Horse The total absence in the English language of a work on the Clinical Diagnosis of Lameness in the Horse, induced me to gather material from all obtainable works, American English, and especially German, to supplement my lectures; this little work therefore is primarily a compilation. The treatment of this subject is so scattered and not fully discussed in any particular work on Surgery, that an expensive and voluminous library at once becomes necessary to study this important branch of Surgery. The extreme courtesy of the eminent surgeon, Professor Doctor H. Moller, Berlin, Germany, has made it possible for me to issue this contribution toward Veterinary Surgery, since he most kindly permitted me to use his various excellent works. This little effort is a resume, embodying mainly the teachings of Professor Doctor Moller, arranged, as I hope, in a practical manner. To the different chapters, short anatomical sketches and drawings, as well as important anatomo-physiological laws, have been added. This compendium is chiefly intended for the student, to give him a concise treatise on the symptoms accompanying the various forms of lameness, the differential diagnosis wherever an error is liable to be made, and recognized practical methods of examination to aid him in the detection of the seat of the lameness. The practitioner may possibly find some points of interest in this little work in his moments of leisure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Horse-Shoeing and Lameness The importance of horse-shoeing to the State and the public is exactly proportionate to the services rendered by horses; since, without the art for the conservation of their feet, all other cares bestowed on the production and perfection of breed must be of little avail. The whole question, however, is of a relative character, and comparisons, not always flattering and welcome, are necessary, in order to carry out successfully the investigation which I deem it necessary to undertake. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lameness in the Horse: With Coloured Lithographic Plates, Illustrative of the Different Species of Lameness While the frequency of the occurrence of lameness, the consultations professional men are continually receiving concern ing it, coupled with the obscurity in which its seat or nature, or both, are occasionally veiled, stamp its importance in a veterinary point of View, it is a subject in which every man who keeps a horse will take more or less interest, if not before, assuredly from the moment the unwelcome visitor has entered his own stable. And yet, strange as it may appear, with the exception of some three or four excellent works on individual lamenesses, hardly has any department of veterinary science, of late years, received less profound consideration. Feeling this, and feeling at the same time that Ishould be but needlessly augmenting a cata logue I complain of, were I', in the present work, to content myself with superficial and common-place descriptions, I have been in duced to deviate some little from the original plan of my Hippo pathology - in this, the Fourth Volume of it - and introduce, in illustration of my text, coloured (lithographic) plates, re presentative of the seat and nature of the several species of lameness: of the latter, at least, as much as the condition of the parts affected could recently after death he expected to exhibit. The Plates have added 'heavily to the expenses of publication. It is, however, hoped that this increased cost - which has neces sarily augmented the price of the work - will be found compensated for in the advantages the reader will derive from' such illustrations. F aithfulness of representation Ican myself vouch for; while the name of the Artist - Mr. Kearney - by whom the drawings have been made from post-mortem specimens of disease, selected and prepared for the purpose, will, I trust, be a sufficient guarantee for their execution. Book The Spavin Group of Lameness Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Spavin Group of Lameness Classic Reprint written by W. L. Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spavin Group of Lameness Historically, spavin is perhaps the oldest lameness of the horse. Standing in the foremost rank economically, it has received at least as much, if not more study than any other. Grouped about this malady and certainly allied, if not identical, to it, in cause and pathology, is a long'list of separately de scribed affections, some of which may well challenge the suprem acy of spavin itself in their frequency and power of diminishing or destroying the usefulness of the horse. We have, therefore, elected to give spavin the title role, rather from convenience than from an inherent right of this one affection to dominate the nomenclature of this extensive group. Among the most com mon and important members of the group, in their approximate order of frequency and economic importance, we would mention spavin, navicular disease, ringbone, sidebone, sesamoiditis, spinitis, gonitis, carpitis, humero - radial arthritis, scapulo-humeral arthritis, etc. In the observations of Dr. Fisher spavin should occupy third or fourth place in frequency. Taken as' a group, they constitute by far the most important lamenesses and, in the destruction of the value of the horse, take high rank among all diseases to which this animal is liable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horsemen's Guide and Farrier, the External and Internal Structure of the Horse, and the Diseases and Lameness to Which He Is Liable As the value of the Horse is daily becoming more manifest, it is presumed that an attempt to reduce into system the art of obtaining and preserving it in health and removing diseases, will not be unacceptable. It is certain that, at no period in the history of the world has the Horse stood so high in general estimation, or by the display of his various powers, rendered himself an object more worthy our consideration. The Horse's Foot and how to keep it sound, and the remarks upon the Horse, Manner of Keeping, the process of Training, Breaking, Educating, Handling and Shoeing wild and vicious Horses, in connection with the different diseases and the remedies attached, will be found in these pages. In my opinion, interesting, reliable and of valuable service to all Horses, or persons dealing in or handling them. This system of Handling, Controling and Subduing wild vicious Horses, is conceded by practical horsemen to be the most thorough and complete now known, and is the result of many original experiments and thorough investigation of the different methods of Horsemanship now in use. Book Lameness of the Horse The Original Classic Edition

Download or read book Lameness of the Horse The Original Classic Edition written by and published by Tebbo. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lameness of the Horse by John Victor Lacroix - The Original Classic Edition Finally available, a high quality book of the original classic edition. It was previously published by other bona fide publishers, and is now, after many years, back in print. This is a new and freshly published edition of this culturally important work, which is now, at last, again available to you. Enjoy this classic work today. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside: False lameness is an impediment in the gait not caused by structural or functional disturbances, but is brought on by conditions such as may result from the too rapid driving of an unbridle-wise colt over an irregular road surface, or by urging a horse to trot at a pace exceeding the normal gait of the animal's capacity, causing it to 'crow-hop' or to lose balance in the stride. ...Subjects of this kind may not be sufficiently inconvenienced to warrant their being taken out of service, yet a lame horse, no matter how slightly affected, should not be continued in service unless it can be positively established that the degree of discomfort occasioned by the claudication is small and the work to be done by the animal, of the sort that will not aggravate the condition. ...In the consideration of group causes, lameness may be said to originate from affections of bones, ligaments, thecae and bursae, muscles and tendons, nerves, lymph vessels and glands, and blood vessels, and may also result from an involvement of one or several of the aforementioned tissues, caused by rheumatism. ...When one considers the proportion of tissue that is composed of lymph vessels and glands, it is then obvious that inflammation of these structures should cause a painful affection of members, when so affected, and that marked lameness and, in some instances, general constitutional disturbance such as anorexia, hyperthermia and general circulatory disorder are to follow. ...Shoulder lameness may be caused by any one or several of a number of conditions, e.g., fractures of the scapula or humerus; arthritis of the shoulder or elbow joint; luxation of the shoulder or elbow joint (rarely); injuries of muscles and tendons of the region due to strains, contusions or penetrant wounds; paralysis of the brachial plexus or of the prescapular nerve; involvement of lymph glands; arterial thrombosis; metastatic infections; rheumatic disturbances; and as the result of inflammation, infectious or non-infectious occasioned by collar bruises.
