Book excerpt: The CDF experiment has recorded 110 pb[sup[minus]1] of p[ovr p] collisions at[radical]s= 1.8 TeV during the 1992-1995 data taking period. Using this dataset, searches for inclusive and semileptonic[Lambda][sub b] decays were performed. The[Lambda][sub b] mass was measured to be M[sub[Lambda][sub b]][equals] 5623[plus-minus] 5(stat.)[plus-minus] 4(syst.) MeV/c[sup 2], using a sample of exclusively reconstructed[Lambda][sub b] candidate events in the[Lambda][sub b][r-arrow][Lambda]J/[psi] channel. The[Lambda][sub b] lifetime was measured to be[tau][sub[Lambda][sub b]][equals] 1. 32[plus-minus] 0.08(stat.)[plus-minus] 0.05(syst.) ps, using a sample of 197[plus-minus] 25 partially reconstructed semileptonic[Lambda][sub b][r-arrow] l[sup[minus]][Lambda][sub c][sup[plus]]X decays, with[Lambda][sub c][sup[plus]] reconstructed from its decay to the pK[sup[minus]][pi][sup[plus]] final state. Using the same decay channels, the product branching ratios were measured to be f(b[r-arrow][Lambda][sub b])B([Lambda][sub b][r-arrow][Lambda]J/[psi])= 4.2[plus-minus]1.8(stat.)[plus-minus]0.7(syst.)[times]10[sup[minus]5] and f(b[r-arrow][Lambda][sub b])B([Lambda][sub b][r-arrow] l[sup[minus]][Lambda][sub c][sup[plus]][ovr[nu]])B([Lambda][sub c][sup[plus]][r-arrow] pK[sup[minus]][pi][sup[plus]])[equals] 9.3[plus-minus]2.5(stat.)[plus-minus][sup[plus]4.6][sub[minus]4.0](syst.)[times]10[sup[minus]4], where f(b[r-arrow][Lambda][sub b]) is the fraction of b quarks forming b baryons, and l is either an electron or a muon. 15 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: While the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) is starting a new data run, it is also finishing analyses based on the 100 pb−1 ''Run 1'' data sample collected between 1992 and 1996. In particular, the [Lambda]{sub b} lifetime has been measured using the exclusive decay channel [Lambda]{sub b} → J/[psi][Lambda]°. The B+ cross section, based upon the decay B+ → J/[psi]K+, has been finalized, as well as the ratio of inclusive b quark cross sections at √s = 630 GeV and 1800 GeV. Early results from the new data run with the displaced-track trigger, which shows great promise for b physics at CDF, are presented.

Measurements have included masses and lifetimes; discovery of the B[sub c]; B[sub s][r-arrow] J/[psi][phi] polarization; B[sup 0][leftrightarrow][bar B][sup 0] mixing; sin (2[beta]); and rare decay limits. Recent results include a search for[Lambda][sub b][r-arrow][Lambda][gamma] and a study of B[sup 0][r-arrow] J/[psi]K(*)[sup 0][pi][sup+][pi][sup[minus]] decays. The tools and experience developed during Run I are quite valuable as CDF enters Run II.

Book excerpt: Performance and Reliability Analysis of Computer Systems: An Example-Based Approach Using the SHARPE Software Package provides a variety of probabilistic, discrete-state models used to assess the reliability and performance of computer and communication systems. The models included are combinatorial reliability models (reliability block diagrams, fault trees and reliability graphs), directed, acyclic task precedence graphs, Markov and semi-Markov models (including Markov reward models), product-form queueing networks and generalized stochastic Petri nets. A practical approach to system modeling is followed; all of the examples described are solved and analyzed using the SHARPE tool. In structuring the book, the authors have been careful to provide the reader with a methodological approach to analytical modeling techniques. These techniques are not seen as alternatives but rather as an integral part of a single process of assessment which, by hierarchically combining results from different kinds of models, makes it possible to use state-space methods for those parts of a system that require them and non-state-space methods for the more well-behaved parts of the system. The SHARPE (Symbolic Hierarchical Automated Reliability and Performance Evaluator) package is the `toolchest' that allows the authors to specify stochastic models easily and solve them quickly, adopting model hierarchies and very efficient solution techniques. All the models described in the book are specified and solved using the SHARPE language; its syntax is described and the source code of almost all the examples discussed is provided. Audience: Suitable for use in advanced level courses covering reliability and performance of computer and communications systems and by researchers and practicing engineers whose work involves modeling of system performance and reliability.
