Download or read book Evaluation of Cross Language Information Retrieval Systems written by Martin Braschler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-08-02 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second evaluation campaign of the Cross Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF) for European languages was held from January to September 2001. This campaign proved a great success, and showed an increase in participation of around 70% com pared with CLEF 2000. It culminated in a two day workshop in Darmstadt, Germany, 3–4 September, in conjunction with the 5th European Conference on Digital Libraries (ECDL 2001). On the first day of the workshop, the results of the CLEF 2001 evalua tion campaign were reported and discussed in paper and poster sessions. The second day focused on the current needs of cross language systems and how evaluation cam paigns in the future can best be designed to stimulate progress. The workshop was attended by nearly 50 researchers and system developers from both academia and in dustry. It provided an important opportunity for researchers working in the same area to get together and exchange ideas and experiences. Copies of all the presentations are available on the CLEF web site at http://www. clef campaign. org. This volume con tains thoroughly revised and expanded versions of the papers presented at the work shop and provides an exhaustive record of the CLEF 2001 campaign. CLEF 2001 was conducted as an activity of the DELOS Network of Excellence for Digital Libraries, funded by the EC Information Society Technologies program to further research in digital library technologies. The activity was organized in collabo ration with the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Book Rage and Carnage in the Name of God

Download or read book Rage and Carnage in the Name of God written by Abiodun Alao and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-11 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Rage and Carnage in the Name of God, Abiodun Alao examines the emergence of a culture of religious violence in postindependence Nigeria, where Christianity, Islam, and traditional religions have all been associated with violence. He investigates the root causes and historical evolution of Nigeria’s religious violence, locating it in the forced coming together of disparate ethnic groups under colonial rule, which planted the seeds of discord that religion, elites, and domestic politics exploit. Alao discusses the histories of Christianity, Islam, and traditional religions in the territory that became Nigeria, the effects of colonization on the role of religion, the development of Islamic radicalization and its relation to Christian violence, the activities of Boko Haram, and how religious violence intermixes with politics and governance. In so doing, he uses religious violence as a way to more fully understand intergroup relations in contemporary Nigeria.

Book Good Governance in Nigeria

Download or read book Good Governance in Nigeria written by Portia Roelofs and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on original fieldwork in Nigeria, Portia Roelofs argues for an innovative re-conceptualisation of good governance. Contributing to debates around technocracy, populism and the survival of democracy amidst conditions of inequality and mistrust, Roelofs offers a new account of what it means for leaders to be accountable and transparent. Centred on the rise of the 'Lagos Model' in the Yoruba south-west, this book places the voices of roadside traders and small-time market leaders alongside those of local government officials, political godfathers and technocrats. In doing so, it theorises 'socially-embedded' good governance. Roelofs demonstrates the value of fieldwork for political theory and the associated possibilities for decolonising the study of politics. Challenging the long-held assumptions of the World Bank and other international institutions that African political systems are pathologically dysfunctional, Roelofs demonstrates that politics in Nigeria has much to teach us about good governance.

Book Nigeria s Critical Election 2011

Download or read book Nigeria s Critical Election 2011 written by John A. A. Ayoade and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elections have been central to regime collapse in Nigeria because they neither passed the test of citizens' acceptability nor electoral neutrality. They always pushed the country to a dangerous brink which she has often survived after serious constitutional and political bruises. The general election of 1964 rocked the delicate balance of the country resulting in the military coup of January 15, 1966 and a thirty month civil war. The subsequent effort of the military at restructuring the country did not go far enough to win the civic confidence of the people. The military availed itself of another opportunity of tinkering with the system in 1993. However, it demonstrated that it was not immune to civic dishonesty when it annulled the widely acclaimed free and fair presidential election in June 12, 1993. By fits and starts, Nigeria held another election in 1999 which was tolerated only because of citizens' fatigue of military rule. The elections of 2003 and 2007 were classic examples of make-belief democracy. The feeding of inequity and, if you will, domination, persisted. A combination of fortune, trickery and arm twisting produced a power shift in favour of Dr. Goodluck Ebele Azikwe Jonathan in April 2011. The subsequent attempt by the north to create a strategic consensus did not save it from being pushed into fringe politics forcing some of its spokespersons to vow that they will make governance impossible. The election was better than the worst but much still remains to be done.
