Download or read book New Zealand Its Physical Geography Geology and Natural History written by Ferdinand von Hochstetter and published by . This book was released on 1867 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Inhabited by Polynesians since the thirteenth century and discovered by Europeans in the seventeenth, New Zealand is a geologically diverse island group where active volcanoes and frequent earthquakes have resulted in a rich variety of rock formations and geothermal activity. In 1859-60, the geologist Ferdinand von Hochstetter (1829-84) was employed by Auckland's government to undertake the first systematic geological survey of the islands, the results of which were first published in German in 1863 and translated into this English version in 1867. Hochstetter describes his travels across New Zealand, his encounters with native people and his scientific observations. He analyses plants, wildlife and fossils, describes mountains, rocks and boiling springs, and evaluates evidence of glaciers and tectonic activity. As a result of Hochstetter's work, several species in New Zealand were named after him. This book remains a valuable resource in the history of Australasian natural science'-- Publisher.

Book Freshwater Management

Download or read book Freshwater Management written by M. Kumagai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The globalization of trade, monetary and fiscal policies, capital markets, and investment patterns is reshaping the world economy and is leading to new financial, commercial, and marketing structures as well as unprecedented economies of scale. Simultaneously, national and international awareness and to strengthen. There is consensus among responses to accelerating environmental degradation continue most developed countries that the rapidly evolving new economic order needs to be well integrated with policies to maintain or restore environmental quality. Many challenges remain, however, in evaluating the geo-ecological implications of economic globalization, and in formulating the appropriate management responses. In lakes and rivers, the management of water supply and quality has largely proceeded on the basis of local considerations rather than at the global scale that has been more typical of environmental management of the atmosphere and ocean. It is increasingly apparent, however, that high-quality water resources are now in critically short supply not only because of local problems such as over-irrigation and eutrophication, but also as a result of larger-scale climate effects on the hydrosphere. This magnitude of impact will increasingly require the integrated monitoring and management of water resources on a planetary scale, with world criteria for environmental assessment, restoration, and conservation strategies. The increasing extent of world trade in potable freshwater heightens the urgency for establishing international approaches, criteria, and regulations.

Book Volcaniclastic Sedimentation in Lacustrine Settings

Download or read book Volcaniclastic Sedimentation in Lacustrine Settings written by James D. L. White and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-03-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a unique compendium of papers assessing theeffects of volcanism on lakes, as recorded by the volcaniclasticsediments deposited within them. The unifying theme is that theeffects of volcanism on lacustrine sedimentation are diverse anddistinctive, and that volcaniclastic lacustrine sediments hold thekey to understanding a range of processes and events that cannot bereadily addressed by the study of any non-volcanic lakes. Thirteen papers, with authors from nine countries, examine bothmodern and ancient eruption-affected lacustrine deposits. Volcaniceruptions affect lakes and their deposits in many ways, and thesepapers evaluate processes and products of volcanic eruptions withinlakes, of tectonically impounded lakes strongly influenced byvolcanism, of eruption-impounded lakes and of general factorscontrolling sedimentation of vitric ash and pumice.Tephrastratigraphic studies also take advantage of the exceptionalpreservation of thin laminae in quiet lakes to precisely dateepisodes in the evolution of long-lived lakes and their catchmentareas, and to understand how volcanism affects normal lacustrineprocesses. The volume as a whole is an unparalleled source of informationon all aspects of the physical sedimentary results of volcanism inlacustrine settings, and serves as a complement to other studiesconcerned primarily with thermal and geochemical characteristics oflakes within volcanic craters. Book Natural and Artificial Rockslide Dams

Download or read book Natural and Artificial Rockslide Dams written by Stephen G. Evans and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-28 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last one hundred years, a number of catastrophic events associated with rockslide dam formation and failure have occurred in the mountain regions of the world. This book presents a global view of the formation, characteristics and behaviour of natural and artificial rockslide dams. Chapters include a comprehensive state-of-the-art review of our global understanding natural and artificial rockslide dams, overviews of approaches to rockslide dam risk mitigation, regional studies of rockslide dams in India, Nepal, China, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Argentina. Rockslide dams associated with large-scale instability of volcanoes are also examined. Detailed case histories of well-known historic and prehistoric rockslide dams provide examples of investigations of rockslide dam behaviour, stability, and characteristics. The formation and behaviour of rockslide-dammed lakes ("Quake Lakes") formed during the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake, China are also comprehensively summarised. The formation, sedimentology and stability of rockslide dams is examined in several analytical papers. An analysis of break-out floods from volcanogenic lakes and hydrological methods of estimating break-out flood magnitude and behavior are reviewed. The use of remote sensing data in rockslide-dammed lake characterisation is explored and a new approach to the classification of rockslide dams is introduced. Finally, a unique section of the book summarises Russian and Kyrgyz experience with blast-fill dam construction in two papers by leading authorities on the technology. The volume contains 24 papers by 50 authors from 16 countries including most of the recognised world authorities on the subject.
