Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shipbuilding in Iron and Steel: A Practical Treatise, Giving Full Details of Construction, Processes of Manufacture, and Building Arrangements MY principal object in writing this book has been to furnish to shipbuilders, and to shipbuilding officers of all grades, fuller information respecting the details of ship construction in iron and steel than any previous work records. In the body of the book I have borne repeated testimony to the merits of the existing writings of Mr. Grantham, Mr. Scott Russell, Dr. Fairbairn, Professor Rankine, and others; but none of these either gives, or professes to give, that copious detailed information of which those who have to superintend the practical operations of shipbuilding, and even cultivated workmen, have often felt the want. During many years' experience in shipyards on all types of marine construction from the smallest of torpedo boats of years ago to the mighty war vessels and mer chant ships of to-day the writer has been associated with the men who are to-day supervising the wonderful ship building program ou which this country is engaged, and he has endeavored to embody the results of this more than twenty years' experience in the book. In the present struggle on land and sea, when every one must use all his might, this manual of the necessary steps in fabricating and assembling of vessels has been prepared with the hope that it will prove a help to some of the many thousand men who must come into this industry from other trades. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Ship Building: Theoretical and Practical IN offering this work on ship-building to officers of the naval service and to others of my profession, the author has no apology to make for its production. Information on this subject has been sought from every available source, with a view of rendering this work useful for the purposes of elementary instruction as well as to the practical builder. The result of the undertaking is hum bly submitted, trusting that it will meet with indulgence for such faults as it may contain. The First Division has been compiled chiefly from Rankine's ship-building, Theoretical and Practical. Credit for articles taken from other authors is given in foot-notes. The Second Division is based upon the actual practice of the public and private ship-yards of this country but the treatises on this subject, of Rankine, Scott Russell, Knowles, and Fin cham have been freely used and portions incorporated whenever it seemed desirable to do so. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iron Ship-Building: With Practical Illustrations The Object of the communication was to institute an inquiry into the advantages to be derived from employ ing iron as a material for building ships, and to com pare such vessels with those built Of timber. The paper was subsequently published in the form of a pamphlet, with plates, and was favourably noticed in all the publications of the day. Book Practical Ship Production Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Ship Production Classic Reprint written by A. W. Carmichael and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Ship Production The purpose of this book is to present in convenient form the most important general principles of ship design, with which every naval architect should be familiar, and to describe the various processes in connection with the building of ships. Its nature is intended to be practical rather than theoretical, it being assumed that the principal problem with which the reader is concerned is the quick production of seagoing vessels from plans already in existence rather than the preparation of new plans. The recent unprecedented increase in shipbuilding in the United States has resulted in a corresponding demand for workmen, draftsmen, and naval architects. It has therefore become necessary for many engineers and technical men, who have never before been confronted with shipbuilding problems, to transfer their activities from the fields of the various other engineering professions to those of the marine engineer and naval architect. These men are familiar with mechanical processes and have the necessary groundwork in theoretical and applied mathematics to fit them for duties in connection with the production of ships, but lack familiarity with those matters that are peculiar to shipbuilding. It is hoped that this book may aid in furnishing, in compact form, some of the more essential parts of this information. It should also be of value to workmen in shipyards who have only such knowledge of the shipbuilding industry as they have gained from practical experience, and who desire to fit themselves for higher positions. It is manifestly impossible to include in a single volume even a most cursory treatment of all the subjects that are involved in the profession of naval architecture. Book The Science of Ship Building

Download or read book The Science of Ship Building written by Hugh Bowlby Willson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Ship-Building: Considered in Its Relations to the Laws of Nature, With Numerous Illustrations IN the following paper I have attempted to sum up the results Of more than a quarter of a century of observation and thought, as sisted by some limited experiments. Since 1834, when I performed for a short time the duties of Purser of a Steamer on Lake Ontario, on the banks of which I was born and brought up, I have had great Opportunities of witnessing the performances of steamers and other vessels. From that time to this, I have been an almost constant voyager on the great lakes and rivers of America, or the ocean. My travels by water, made in all sorts of vessels - from a fishing boat to the Leviathan - would more than quadruple the circumference of the earth. But in endeavouring to investigate the intricate question of resistance to ships, and the best form to overcome that resistance, I have to confess myself deficient in one very desirable, if not essential, qualification, namely, a high mathe matical education - having entirely neglected those studies after leaving school. My paper, therefore, though on a scientific subject, is not a scientific paper. Nevertheless, my experience has enabled me, as I believe, to see where so many learned and scientific men have failed in their efforts to master some of the many important questions connected with naval architecture. Under these circumstances, I trust that what I have to communicate will be received indulgently, and serve to point the way towards greater perfection in that profession which is doing so much to civilize and benefit mankind. Book Ship Construction and Calculations

Download or read book Ship Construction and Calculations written by George Nicol and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ship Construction and Calculations: With Numerous Illustrations and Examples, for the Use of Officers of the Mercantile Marine, Ship Superintendents, Draughtsmen, Etc It is hoped the book will be found useful by officers of the Mercantile Marine, ship superintendents, draughtsmen, and shipyard apprentices, to all' of whom a more or less intimate knowledge of naval architecture is essential. To the officer mariner the subject may now be said to be a compulsory one, in that those who wish to qualify for the certificate of extra master must pass an examination in it. But besides this, there are other good reasons why an officer should know something regarding the construction and theory of ships. For instance, it would enable him, if called upon, to act as inspector on behalf of his employers at the building of a new vessel or the repair of an old one. Or, if his vessel were to receive sudden damage, calling for immediate temporary repairs, it would give him confidence in directing his crew in the carrying out of these. In the management of his vessel afloat, a knowledge of simple theory would assist him at any time to arrive quickly at satisfactory conditions of draught, trim and stability, unattainable by mere guess-work or a system of trial and error. In other ways also such knowledge would prove useful. The examples chosen for illustration throughout the book have been selected for their practical interest, and every effort has been exerted to make the explanations simple. In conclusion, the author begs to thank Messrs. J. L. Thompson Sons, Ltd., Sunderland, for their kind permission to publish diagrams and results of calculations of vessels built by them; and he also desires to acknowledge his indebtedness to Mr. W. Thompson, e.sc., for help in reading the proof sheets, and in verifying the examples, as well as for other valuable assistance rendered while the work was passing through the press.
