This book was released on 1988 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final goal of the Lake Okeechobee Technical Advisory Council (LOTAC II) is to make findings and recommendations for permanently eliminating adverse environmental effects of past and proposed diversions. The interim objective is to evaluate alternatives using available data and to identify information needs for determining permanent solutions. This interim report presents findings and recommendations toward that objective. It considers diversions to three receiving areas: Everglades National Park, the Indian River estaury, and the Caloosahatchee River and its estuary. Volume I contains the findings and recommendations. Volume II includes technical appendixes for these areas, plus information on the trophic state, LOTAC II correspondence, and minutes of LOTAC II meetings.

Book Theory Modeling and Experience in the Management of Nonpoint Source Pollution

Download or read book Theory Modeling and Experience in the Management of Nonpoint Source Pollution written by Clifford S. Russell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonpoint-source pollution (NPSP) poses a special challenge to society's ability to manage its collective environmental good - especially surface and groundwater quality. Since there is no `point', such as an outfall pipe, from which the pollution is being discharged and can be measured, pollution can reach the ambient environment without being monitored. Since management of air and water polution requires the definition and enforcement of limits on discharges or the imposition of fees on those discharges, inability to measure limits our ability to manage this environmental problem. This book presents a state-of-the-art review and discussion of economists' efforts to resolve this major problem and attempts to provide a way of working around it. The book sets forth the theoretical issues, modeling, and the actual programs set up to confront this issue.

Book Mercury and the Everglades A Synthesis and Model for Complex Ecosystem Restoration

Download or read book Mercury and the Everglades A Synthesis and Model for Complex Ecosystem Restoration written by Darren G. Rumbold and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-30 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book integrates 30 years of mercury research in the Florida Everglades to inform scientists and policy makers. The Everglades is an iconic ecosystem by virtue of its expanse; diversity of biota; and multiple international designations. Despite this, the Everglades has been subjected to multiple threats including: habitat loss, hydrologic alterations, invasive species and altered water quality. Less well recognized as a threat to Everglades human use and wildlife populations is the toxic metal, mercury. The first half of Volume II focuses on biogeochemistry and factors unique to the Everglades that make it extraordinarily susceptible to mercury methylation following its deposition: warm subtropical climate, shallow depth, high levels of dissolved organic matter, sulfate contamination, nutrient enrichment and sediment redox conditions (for review of atmospheric mercury deposition significance, see Vol. I). The second half of Volume II answers the “so what” question – why biomagnification of the methylmercury produced in the Everglades is a threat to the health of top predators including humans. The results of the synthesis presented in Volume II suggest that the mercury problem in the Florida Everglades is one of the worst in the world due to its areal extent and the degree of risk to ecological receptors and humans.

Book excerpt: Coastal Zone '91 is the seventh in a series of biennial multidisciplinary symposia on comprehensive coastal and ocean management. The papers included in this proceedings review technical knowledge and current practice for the improvement of planning, environmental considerations, design, development, and conservation actions related to coasts, wetlands, and oceans. These topics are addressed from different points of view: engineering and science; data gathering and monitoring; legal, regulatory and political aspects of coastal management; planning, conservation and development; and public information and citizen participation. This proceedings will help to diffuse technical knowledge and current practice for the improvement of planning, design, development and conservation actions relating to our coasts and oceans.
