Book Lake and River Restoration

Download or read book Lake and River Restoration written by Gang Pan and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eutrophication has become one of the major environmental issues of global concern due to the adverse effects on water quality, public health, and ecosystem sustainability. Fundamental research on the restoration of eutrophic freshwaters, i.e., lakes and rivers, is crucial to supporting further evidence-based practical implementations. The 12 published research papers can be classified into to three major aspects of this topic, into which they provide valuable contributions. Firstly, a background investigation into the migration of nutrients and the characteristics of submerged biota will guide and assist understanding of the mechanisms of future restoration. Secondly, various restoration strategies are studied and evaluated, including control of both external and internal nutrient loading. Thirdly, an evaluation of field sites after restoration treatment is reported in order to support the selection of appropriate restoration approaches. We foresee that the papers will significantly contribute to eutrophication control, natural water sustainability, and ecological restoration.

Book Nutrient Management in Agricultural Watersheds

Download or read book Nutrient Management in Agricultural Watersheds written by E.J. Dunne and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutrient enrichment of water resources by inputs of nitrogen and phosphorus, which can lead to eutrophication is still a water quality problem in agriculturally dominated watersheds around the world. Internationally, wetlands both constructed and natural are increasingly being used to help reduce both point and non-point source nutrient and contaminant loss from agricultural practices. This publication contains papers presented at the international symposium on "Nutrient Management in Agricultural Watersheds: A Wetlands Solution," which was held during May, 2004 in Wexford, Ireland. The symposium was the result of an international collaboration between the Teagasc Research Centre, Johnstown Castle, Ireland, National Parks and Wildlife, Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Ireland and the Soil and Water Science Department at the University of Florida, Gainesville, USA. These proceedings cover aspects of water quality within agricultural watersheds; management practices to mitigate contaminant and nutrient loss from agriculture; wetland biogeochemistry; wetland functions and values within agricultural dominated landscapes; case studies of wetlands used to retain nutrient and contaminant loss from agriculture; and finally some management and policy issues concerning wetlands are presented. This book provides a good interdisciplinary synthesis of international experiences both in Europe and the USA on the use of wetlands within agricultural watersheds.

Book Progress Toward Restoring the Everglades

Download or read book Progress Toward Restoring the Everglades written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Everglades ecosystem is vast, stretching more than 200 miles from Orlando to Florida Bay, and Everglades National Park is but a part located at the southern end. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the historical Everglades has been reduced to half of its original size, and what remains is not the pristine ecosystem many image it to be, but one that has been highly engineered and otherwise heavily influenced, and is intensely managed by humans. Rather than slowly flowing southward in a broad river of grass, water moves through a maze of canals, levees, pump stations, and hydraulic control structures, and a substantial fraction is diverted from the natural system to meet water supply and flood control needs. The water that remains is polluted by phosphorus and other contaminants originating from agriculture and other human activities. Many components of the natural system are highly degraded and continue to degrade. Progress Toward Restoring the Everglades is the sixth biennial review of progress made in meeting the goals of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). This complex, multibillion-dollar project to protect and restore the remaining Everglades has a 30-40 year timeline. This report assesses progress made in the various separate project components and discusses specific scientific and engineering issues that may impact further progress. According to Progress Toward Restoring the Everglades, a dedicated source of funding could provide ongoing long-term system-wide monitoring and assessment that is critical to meeting restoration objectives. This report examines the implications of knowledge gained and changes in widely accepted scientific understanding regarding pre-drainage hydrology, climate change, and the feasibility of water storage since the CERP was developed.
