Download or read book Climate Change and Anthropos written by Linda Connor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropos, in the sense of species as well as cultures and ethics, locates humans as part of much larger orders of existence – fundamental when thinking about climate change. This book offers a new way of exploring the significance of locality and lives in the epoch of the Anthropocene, a time when humans confront the limits of our control over nature. Many scholars now write about the ethics, policies and politics of climate change, focussing on global processes and effects. The book’s innovative approach to cross-cultural comparison and a regionally based study explores people’s experiences of environmental change and the meaning of climate change for diverse human worlds in a changing biosphere. The main study site is the Hunter Valley in southeast Australia: an ecological region defined by the Hunter River catchment; a dwelling place for many generations of people; and a key location for transnational corporations focussed on the mining, burning and export of black coal. Abundant fossil fuel reserves tie Hunter people and places to the Asia Pacific – the engine room of global economic growth in the twenty-first century and the largest user of the planet’s natural resources. The book analyses the nexus of place and perceptions, political economy and social organisation in situations where environmental changes are radically transforming collective worlds. Based on an anthropological approach informed by other ways of thinking about environment-people relationships, this book analyses the social and cultural dimensions of climate change holistically. Each chapter links the large scales of species and planet with small places, commodity chains, local actions, myths and values, as well as the mingled strands of dystopian imaginings and strivings for recuperative renewal in an era of transition.

Download or read book Life s Fight Love s Might written by Dawn Everson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life's Fight, Love's Might is a controversial true story about Lorna, a courageous determined Australian woman whose life was ravaged by the betrayal of her family, her employers, the Christian church, the judicial system and sanctioned abuse by the state and federal governments. Lorna stood alone against the world that's until she meets Rod, a surfie who sweeps her off her feet. Unfortunately, their fervent love also feels the smack of betrayal, which nearly destroys them both, but ultimately they stand united with trust, love and loyalty. When Rod enlists, Lorna becomes an excellent army wife. She learns how to compromise, because the army must come first. She becomes independent and resourceful while her soldier is away, supporting him all the way up the ranks to Warrant Office. Rod's postings take Lorna and their two children to Sydney, Papua New Guinea, Canberra and Melbourne. Lorna finds each posting is fraught with its own kind of agony, with Papua New Guinea being the worst of all. She survives unbelievable traumas, which befall her and her family. Then she faces the failures of the Australian Defence Force and the Department of Veterans' Affairs. To the Australian people these two systems appear to be functioning at an optimum for the serving members of the ADF, veterans' and their families respectively, but it only appears that they are. Lorna also gives accounts of how the leadership within the Christian community believes it is above the law of the land, and how the judicial system aides the church's betrayal of trust. In the end, Lorna's resilience and strength wins through to overcome the impossible, leading her to write this inspiring book.
Download or read book Desert Diggers written by David Mitchelhill-Green and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-04-03 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Desert Diggers: Writings from a War Zone ‘Somewhere in the Middle East’ 1940-1942 draws upon hundreds of soldiers’ letters in a fresh and captivating narrative of the war in North Africa. Desert Diggers follows the first men to volunteer after the outbreak of war in 1939, tracing their adventures in exotic ports before further training in Palestine. A hunger for action grew: ‘Most of the chaps are ... anxious to get into anything that looks like a fight’, one soldier wrote to his brother. From Egypt, ‘the hottest and dustiest place on God's earth’ was the Diggers’ next destination and their ‘blooding’ in the battles for Bardia and Tobruk. After Rommel failed to storm Tobruk in April-May 1941, Nazi propaganda denigrated the garrison, ‘caught like rats in a trap’. Amid frequent bombing and shelling, Berlin’s scornful broadcasts were an unintended tonic. ‘Frequently we laughed and joked until the tears came into our eyes’, a Digger quipped. From Tobruk, to the blunting of Rommel’s attacks at El Alamein, the price of victory was palpably high: ‘some of my best mates didn't come out of it’, lamented a corporal to his sister. Returning to Australia in 1943, some men maimed or traumatised, brought a further test for the Diggers ... Told in the words of the men who served, Desert Diggers offers a new personal perspective on the Western Desert campaign. With immediacy and raw emotion, these skillfully woven letters provide a remarkable and compelling account of the Australian experience of war.
