Book Lake District Mountain Landforms

Download or read book Lake District Mountain Landforms written by Peter Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written with fell walkers and other countryside enthusiasts in mind this thoroughly engaging and absorbing book shows that there is much more to the Lake District than simply 'stanes and watter'. Have you ever wondered why Scafell is different from Skiddaw, or why the east side of Helvellyn is different from the west side, or why Ullswater is different from Windermere, or why the summit of Helm Crag is, well, a bit craggy? If so, this book will provide some answers, together with a deeper understanding of how the fell country acquired its special characteristics. The physical landscape of the Lake District acts like a giant magnet, attracting several million visitors every year to the fell country. From John Constable to Alfred Wainwright, via William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, the Lake District has inspired visitors and residents alike. Although often romanticised in words and pictures as static and enduring, the mountains of the Lake District are dynamic elements of nature undergoing constant change. Media interest in climate change, storms, floods and landslides has done much to increase the public's perception of a 'dynamic' rather than a 'static' physical landscape.

Book Landscapes and Landforms of England and Wales

Download or read book Landscapes and Landforms of England and Wales written by Andrew Goudie and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-10 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the geomorphological diversity of England and Wales. These regions are characterised by an extraordinary range of landforms and landscapes, reflecting both the occurrence of many different rock types and drastic climatic changes over the last few million years, including ice sheet expansion and decay. The book begins by providing the geological and geomorphological context needed in order to understand this diversity in a relatively small area. In turn, it presents nearly thirty case studies on specific landscapes and landforms, all of which are landmarks in the territory discussed. These include the famous coastal cliffs and landslides, granite tors of Dartmoor, formerly glaciated mountains of Snowdonia and the Lake District, karst of Yorkshire, and many others. The geomorphology of London and the Thames is also included. Providing a unique reference guide to the geomorphology of England and Wales, the book is lavishly illustrated with diagrams, colour maps and photos, and written in an easy-to-read style. The contributing authors are distinguished geomorphologists with extensive experience in research, writing and communicating science to the public. The book will not only be of interest to geoscientists, but will also benefit specialists in landscape research, geoconservation, tourism and environmental protection.

Book Mountain Geography

  • Author : Martin F. Price
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2013-08-24
  • ISBN : 0520956974
  • Pages : 397 pages

Download or read book Mountain Geography written by Martin F. Price and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-08-24 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mountains cover a quarter of the Earth’s land surface and a quarter of the global population lives in or adjacent to these areas. The global importance of mountains is recognized particularly because they provide critical resources, such as water, food and wood; contain high levels of biological and cultural diversity; and are often places for tourism and recreation and/or of sacred significance. This major revision of Larry Price’s book Mountains and Man (1981) is both timely and highly appropriate. The past three decades have been a period of remarkable progress in our understanding of mountains from an academic point of view. Of even greater importance is that society at large now realizes that mountains and the people who reside in them are not isolated from the mainstream of world affairs, but are vital if we are to achieve an environmentally sustainable future. Mountain Geography is a comprehensive resource that gives readers an in-depth understanding of the geographical processes occurring in the world’s mountains and the overall impact of these regions on culture and society as a whole. The volume begins with an introduction to how mountains are defined, followed by a comprehensive treatment of their physical geography: origins, climatology, snow and ice, landforms and geomorphic processes, soils, vegetation, and wildlife. The concluding chapters provide an introduction to the human geography of mountains: attitudes toward mountains, people living in mountain regions and their livelihoods and interactions within dynamic environments, the diverse types of mountain agriculture, and the challenges of sustainable mountain development.

Book A Description of the Scenery in the Lake District Intended as a Guide to Strangers Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Description of the Scenery in the Lake District Intended as a Guide to Strangers Classic Reprint written by William Ford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Description of the Scenery in the Lake District, Intended as a Guide to Strangers Mountains yield to none, however individually inferior they may be, owing to their being seldom seen in a detached point of view: although, on the other hand, they have thus the advantage of forming combinations at once grand and sublime, towering above each other, or rising in ridges like the mighty billows of the ocean. Their general covering is a rich green turf, affording excellent pasturage to large flocks of sheep. The brown of the dying fern and the pur ple hue of the heather add to the variety no less than the beauty of the tints. On some, rocks predominate others have their fronts torn and ploughed up by bursts and speats of rain, exposing and laying bare the soil. The vallies which lie between these masses, are not formed like those of Wales, by the sloping sides of the mountains meeting, so as to leave little room for anything but a terrace road and rugged bed of a. River; but they wind amongst the hills with intricate and abrupt turnings, and in the level bottoms, either a lake quietly rests, or wooded hows and little knolls, on which the cottages are perched, rise out of green meadows and smiling corn fields. It is a great recommendation also to these vales, that each has its peculiar character, no one taken as a whole, bearing much resemblance to any other. Book Mining and Quarrying in Neolithic Europe

Download or read book Mining and Quarrying in Neolithic Europe written by Anne Teather and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The social processes involved in acquiring flint and stone in the Neolithic began to be considered over thirty years ago, promoting a more dynamic view of past extraction processes. Whether by quarrying, mining or surface retrieval, the geographic source locations of raw materials and their resultant archaeological sites have been approached from different methodological and theoretical perspectives. In recent years this has included the exploration of previously undiscovered sites, refined radiocarbon dating, comparative ethnographic analysis and novel analytical approaches to stone tool manufacture and provenancing. The aim of this volume in the Neolithic Studies Group Papers is to explore these new findings on extraction sites and their products. How did the acquisition of raw materials fit into other aspects of Neolithic life and social networks? How did these activities merge in creating material items that underpinned cosmology, status and identity? What are the geographic similarities, constraints and variables between the various raw materials, and how does the practise of stone extraction in the UK relate to wider extractive traditions in northwestern Europe? Eight papers address these questions and act as a useful overview of the current state of research on the topic.
