Book excerpt: A cultural history of Sápmi and the Nordic countries as told through objects and artifacts Material objects—things made, used, and treasured—tell the story of a people and place. So it is for the Indigenous Sámi living in Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia, whose story unfolds across borders and centuries, in museums and private collections. The objects created by the Sámi for daily and ceremonial use were purchased and taken by Scandinavians and foreign travelers in Lapland from the seventeenth century to the present, and the collections described in From Lapland to Sápmi map a complex history that is gradually shifting to a renaissance of Sámi culture and craft, along with the return of many historical objects to Sápmi, the Sámi homeland. The Sámi objects first collected in Lapland by non-Indigenous people were drums and other sacred artifacts, but later came to include handmade knives, decorated spoons, clothing, and other domestic items owned by Sámi reindeer herders and fishers, as well as artisanal crafts created for sale. Barbara Sjoholm describes how these objects made their way via clergy, merchants, and early scientists into curiosity cabinets and eventually to museums in Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, and abroad. Musicians, writers, and tourists also collected Sámi culture for research and enjoyment. Displays of Sámi material culture in Scandinavia and England, Germany, and other countries in museums, exhibition halls, and even zoos often became part of racist and colonial discourse as examples of primitive culture, and soon figured in the debates of ethnographers and curators over representations of national folk traditions and “exotic” peoples. Sjoholm follows these objects and collections from the Age of Enlightenment through the twentieth century, when artisanship took on new forms in commerce and museology and the Sámi began to organize politically and culturally. Today, several collections of Sámi objects are in the process of repatriation, while a new generation of artists, activists, and artisans finds inspiration in traditional heritage and languages. Deftly written and amply illustrated, with contextual notes on language and Nordic history, From Lapland to Sápmi brings to light the history of collecting, displaying, and returning Sámi material culture, as well as the story of Sámi creativity and individual and collective agency.

Based on both historical material such as archaeological evidence, 20th century newspapers, and postcard motives as well as current sources such as ongoing land-right trials and recent works of historiography, the articles highlight the culture and living conditions of this indigenous group, mapping the negotiations of different identities through the interaction of Saami and non-Saami people through the ages. By illuminating this under-researched field, the volume also enriches the more general debate on global indigenous history, and sheds light on the construction of a Scandinavian identity and the limits of the welfare state and the myth of heterogeneity and equality.

The emergence of modern nation-states can be seen as coinciding with the historical rise of children’s literature, while stateless or diasporic nations have frequently formulated their national consciousness and experience through children’s literature, both instructing children as future citizens and highlighting how ideas of childhood inform the discourses of nation and citizenship. Because nation and childhood are so intimately connected, it is crucial for critics and scholars to shed light on how children’s literatures have constructed and represented historically different national experiences. At the same time, given the massive political and demographic changes in the world since the nineteenth century and the formation of nation states, it is also crucial to evaluate how the national has been challenged by changing national languages through globalization, international commerce, and the rise of English. Dress has been harnessed as a metaphor for both progress and stability, the exotic and the utopian, oppression and freedom, belonging and resistance. Dressing with Purpose examines three Scandinavian dress traditions—Swedish folkdräkt, Norwegian bunad, and Sámi gákti—and traces their development during two centuries of social and political change across northern Europe. By the 20th century, many in Sweden worried about the ravages of industrialization, urbanization, and emigration on traditional ways of life. Norway was gripped in a struggle for national independence. Indigenous Sámi communities—artificially divided by national borders and long resisting colonial control—rose up in protests that demanded political recognition and sparked cultural renewal. Book excerpt: "This dissertation is a colonial discourse analysis of the construction of Sápmi (Sámiland) as colonized territory and the Sámi as colonized subjects, and an exploration of some oppositional responses to that construction. Beginning with classical representations of the wilderness beyond the civilized space of the polis - and subsequently of the empire - and of the inhabitants with which the ancient Greek, Roman, and Hebrew imaginations populated this space, the analysis goes on to trace the incorporation of the Sámi into world views that constructed the uncivilized as mirrors to reflect the image of the civilized gazing subject back to himself. From Tacitus' Germania and later Roman and post-Roman Mediterranean texts, through the medieval and early modern periods, the examination follows the pre-colonial textual production of tropes of wildness, magic, and remoteness that form the basis of colonial discursive treatment of the Sámi. Colonial discourse emerges with the beginning of colonial expropriation of Sápmi and the Sámi in the sixteenth century. This dissertation follows the development of that discourse, and examines its transformations as it legitimizes and accommodates colonization into the twentieth century. Successively informed by and incorporated within various metropolitan European discourses, including those of the Enlightenment, the Noble Savage, and Social Darwinism, colonial discourse marginalizes and objectifies the Sámi while it inscribes them and their territory within the modern states of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. The examination of colonial discourse culminates with the extreme marginalization of the Sámi in Knut Hamsun' s novel 'Markens grøde.' In its final section this dissertation examines the challenges facing oppositional texts, situated as they are within the traditions of colonial discourse's systems of representational containment and appropriation. One of the primary difficulties faced by both Sámi and non-Sámi authors in their counter-hegemonic endeavors is avoiding the essentialisms and binary oppositions posited by colonial discourse. This dissertation examines several different approaches to liberatory writing on the Sami, ending with Aagot Vinterbo-Hohr's 'Palimpsest' and Laila Stien's 'Vekselsang, ' two novels that undermine the essentialist constructions of colonial discourse and open a discursive space for multiple and diverse articulations of Sámi resistance and identity"--Leaves ix-x.
