Book excerpt: When Alain Adair dies, it is a brutal death for a brutal man. The townsfolk know who killed him, but they dont know how. They suspect magic, though no one has the courage to speak the words aloud. Alains young wife, Kora, murdered her husband, although she has no idea how she did so. Suspected of using magic, she flees and seeks refuge in an ancient forest. Unconscious, feverish, and at the threshold of death, her life takes a strange turn; when she wakes she is tethered to Draeon, a rebellious dragon prince. Kora struggles to understand who and what she is while surrounded by creatures known as Fae in a world filled with magic. She and Draeon become intertwined with the nefarious goals of an over-ambitious dragon, Fedelmid, who seeks to gain power at the sacrifice of all. With an aging dragon historian, two elves, and two dwarves, Kora and Draeon become the unlikely chosen people to venture to the human world to ensure the scheming, power-hungry Fedelmid faces justice. The fate of the Fae, as well as the human race, depends upon their success in stopping him. Their bond and its physical limitations could prove to be an overwhelming challenge to accomplishing this goal.

Book Selves and Identities in Narrative and Discourse

Download or read book Selves and Identities in Narrative and Discourse written by Michael Bamberg and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-12-14 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The different traditions that have inspired the contributors to this volume can be divided along three different orientations, one that is rooted predominantly in sociolinguistics, a second that is ethnomethodologically informed, and a third that came in the wake of narrative interview research. All three share a commitment to view self and identity not as essential properties of the person but as constituted in discursive practices and particularly in narrative. Moreover, since self and identity are held to be phenomena that are contextually and continually generated, they are defined and viewed in the plural, as selves and identities. In the attempt of moving closer toward a process-oriented approach to the formation of selves and identities, this volume sets the stage for future discussions of the role of narrative and discourse in this generation process and for how a close analysis of these processes can advance an understanding of the world around us and within this world, of identities and selves.

Book Going to the People

Download or read book Going to the People written by Chang-tai Hung and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is generally believed that Mao Zedong’s populism was an abrupt departure from traditional Chinese thought. This study demonstrates that many of its key concepts had been developed several decades earlier by young May Fourth intellectuals, including Liu Fu, Zhou Zuoren, and Gu Jiegang. The Chinese folk-literature movement, begun at National Beijing University in 1918, changed the attitudes of Chinese intellectuals toward literature and toward the common people. Turning their backs on “high culture” and Confucianism, young folklorists began “going to the people,” particularly peasants, to gather the songs, legends, children’s stories, and proverbs that Chang-tai Hung here describes and analyzes. Their focus on rural culture, rural people, and rural problems was later to be expanded by the Chinese Communist revolutionaries."

Book The Oxford Gothic Grammar

Download or read book The Oxford Gothic Grammar written by D. Gary Miller and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-24 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a comprehensive reference grammar of Gothic, the earliest attested language of the Germanic family (apart from runic inscriptions), dating to the fourth century. The bulk of the extant Gothic corpus is a translation of the Bible, of which only a portion remains, and which has been the focus of most previous works. This book is the first in English to also draw on the recently discovered Bologna fragment and Crimean graffiti, original Gothic texts that provide more insights into the language. Following an overview of the history of the Goths and the origin of the Gothic language, Gary Miller explores all the major topics in Gothic grammar, beginning with the alphabet and phonology, and proceeding through subjects such as case functions, prepositions and particles, compounding, derivation, and verbal and sentential syntax. He also presents a selection of Gothic texts with notes and vocabulary, and ends with a chapter on linearization, including an overview of Gothic in its Germanic context. The Oxford Gothic Grammar will be an invaluable reference for all Indo-Europeanists, Germanic scholars, and historical linguists, from advanced undergraduate level upwards.
