Book excerpt: The elegant, ultra-modern SS Koombana arrived in Western Australia in March 1909; after only three years of service in the North West of Australia, the ship and her entire complement disappeared in a late-summer cyclone off the Pilbara coast in 1912. All 156 lives were lost but the wreck was never found. This thoroughly researched and compelling book comes closer than ever before to solving the mystery of Australia’s most significant maritime disaster. Author Annie Boyd spent months camping along the coast, diving and investigating wrecks, researching the Koombana, and meeting with descendants of those lost in the tragedy. This insightful account is the culmination of her work, which includes a 20,000 page online resource with background material and primary sources.

Book Taxonomy of Australian Mammals

Download or read book Taxonomy of Australian Mammals written by Stephen Matthew Jackson and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taxonomy of Australian Mammals utilises the latest morphometric and genetic research to develop the most up to date and comprehensive revision of the taxonomy of Australian mammals undertaken to date. It proposes significant changes to the higher ranks of a number of groups and recognises several genera and species that have only very recently been identified as distinct. This easy to use reference also includes a complete listing of all species, subspecies and synonyms for all of Australia’s mammals, both native and introduced as well as terrestrial and marine. This book lays a foundation for future taxonomic work and identifies areas where taxonomic studies should be targeted, not only at the species and subspecies level but also broader phylogenetic relationships. This work will be an essential reference for students, scientists, wildlife managers and those interested in the science of taxonomy.

Book Beaches of the Western Australian Coast

Download or read book Beaches of the Western Australian Coast written by Andrew D. Short and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beaches of the Western Australian Coast covers the Western Australian coast between Eucla and Roebuck Bay, and includes Rottnest Island. It begins with three chapters that provide a background to the physical nature and evolution of the Western Australian coast and its 2,051 mainland beach systems. Chapter one covers the geological evolution of the coast and the role climate, wave, tides and wind in shaping the present coast and beaches. Chapter two presents in more detail the 16 types of beach systems that occur along the Western Australian coast, and chapter three discusses the types of beach hazards along the coast and the role of Surf Lifesaving Western Australia in mitigating these hazards. Chapter four presents a description of each of the 2,051 mainland beaches, as well as 63 beaches on Rottnest Island. The description of each beach includes its name, location, physical characteristics, access and facilities, with specific comments on its surf zone character and physical hazards, and its suitability for swimming, surfing and fishing. Based on the physical hazards, all beaches are rated in terms of public safety and scaled from 1 (least hazardous) to 10 (most hazardous).
