Book excerpt: Island One, the U.S.'s first space colony and symbol of an American Renaissance, is in trouble. Low morale, shoddy workmanship, unexplained malfunctions, and avoidable accidents have become a way of life, and nobody seems to know why. Is in the Russians? Home-grown anti-technologists? Arabs afraid of cheap solar power from Space -- or something even more sinister? When the President ordered secret agent Peter Kapitz to find out what was going on, Peter's first discovery is that the Russians are indeed involved. His second is that they are not alone. He will probably not live to make a third.

Download or read book Low Energy Lunar Trajectory Design written by Jeffrey S. Parker and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on years of research conducted at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Low-Energy Lunar Trajectory Design provides high-level information to mission managers and detailed information to mission designers about low-energy transfers between Earth and the moon. The book answers high-level questions about the availability and performance of such transfers in any given month and year. Low-energy lunar transfers are compared with various other types of transfers, and placed within the context of historical missions. Using this book, designers may reconstruct any transfer described therein, as well as design similar transfers with particular design parameters. An Appendix, “Locating the Lagrange Points,” and a useful list of terms and constants completes this technical reference. Surveys thousands of possible trajectories that may be used to transfer spacecraft between Earth and the moon, including transfers to lunar libration orbits, low lunar orbits, and the lunar surface Provides information about the methods, models, and tools used to design low-energy lunar transfers Includes discussion about the variations of these transfers from one month to the next, and the important operational aspects of implementing a low-energy lunar transfer Additional discussions address navigation, station-keeping, and spacecraft systems issues
Download or read book La Grange written by Chris C. McCallister and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporated on April 10, 1869, La Grange is seated in the coastal plain region of eastern North Carolina; it is equal in distance to the North Carolina coast and the capital city, Raleigh. Prior to 1869, La Grange was known as Moseley Hall, properly named by one of its founders, Matthew Moseley. They settled here because of the rich soil. Tobacco, in particular, was a significant cash crop. La Grange received its nickname, the "garden spot," due to its beautiful vegetation and the residents' gardens and flowers that adorned the very center of the town. At the very foundation of North Carolina's history, La Grange has had many state assembly members; the first governor of Florida hailed from La Grange. The area is also known for its agricultural farming, historical homes, and several small-town businesses. La Grange showcases the rich agricultural and community history of this eastern North Carolina town.
Download or read book The Fifth Postulate written by Jason Socrates Bardi and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great discovery that no one wanted to make It's the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, and Euclidean geometry has been profoundly influential for centuries. One mystery remains, however: Euclid's fifth postulate has eluded for two thousand years all attempts to prove it. What happens when three nineteenth-century mathematicians realize that there is no way to prove the fifth postulate and that it ought to be discarded—along with everything they'd come to know about geometry? Jason Socrates Bardi shares the dramatic story of the moment when the tangible and easily understood world we live in gave way to the strange, mind-blowing world of relativity, curved space-time, and more. "Jason Socrates Bardi tells the story of the discovery of non-Euclidian geometry—one of the greatest intellectual advances of all time—with tremendous clarity and verve. I loved this book." —John Horgan, author, The End of Science and Rational Mysticism "An accessible and engrossing blend of micro-biography, history and mathematics, woven together to reveal a blockbuster discovery." —David Wolman, author of Righting the Mother Tongue and A Left-Hand Turn around the World
Download or read book From Cardano s Great Art to Lagrange s Reflections written by Jacqueline A. Stedall and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2011 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an exploration of a claim made by Lagrange in the autumn of 1771 as he embarked upon his lengthy ``Reflexions sur la resolution algebrique des equations'': that there had been few advances in the algebraic solution of equations since the time of Cardano in the mid sixteenth century. That opinion has been shared by many later historians. The present study attempts to redress that view and to examine the intertwined developments in the theory of equations from Cardano to Lagrange. A similar historical exploration led Lagrange himself to insights that were to transform the entire nature and scope of algebra. Progress was not confined to any one country: at different times mathematicians in Italy, France, the Netherlands, England, Scotland, Russia, and Germany contributed to the discussion and to a gradual deepening of understanding. In particular, the national Academies of Berlin, St. Petersburg, and Paris in the eighteenth century were crucial in supporting informed mathematical communities and encouraging the wider dissemination of key ideas. This study therefore truly highlights the existence of a European mathematical heritage. The book is written in three parts. Part I offers an overview of the period from Cardano to Newton (1545 to 1707) and is arranged chronologically. Part II covers the period from Newton to Lagrange (1707 to 1771) and treats the material according to key themes. Part III is a brief account of the aftermath of the discoveries made in the 1770s. The book attempts throughout to capture the reality of mathematical discovery by inviting the reader to follow in the footsteps of the authors themselves, with as few changes as possible to the original notation and style of presentation.
