Book A Lady s Experiences in the Wild West in 1883

Download or read book A Lady s Experiences in the Wild West in 1883 written by Rose Pender and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1985-03-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aristocratic Rose Pender and her husband, James, were among the thousands of English travelers in the American West during the latter half of the nineteenth century. This is Pender's lively account of a grand tour in 1883 of Texas, California, Salt Lake City, Wyoming, Dakota Territory, and far-flung points. ø A. B. Guthrie Jr. in his foreword writes that "all students and collectors will want" A Lady's Experiences in the Wild West in 1883. "It deals with a West in transition from frontier to the glimmer of modern times, from open range to fenced pastures, from trails to trains, from makeshift and made-do to more convenient and easier ways. We see it through the eyes and from the sensibilities of a gentlewoman and a Britisher to boot. The woman was indeed a Lady. She brought to America her highborn prejudices and standards. . .and with them a sharp eye, a chatty pen, and a game spirit. . . . She adds to our knowledge of a time no one is old enough to remember."

Book excerpt: The protagonist is Helene. Beautiful. Dominating. Free. Uninhibited. Her brief, daring and, in some ways, fascinating existence is rich in events which take her from the orphanage to becoming "Lady S", the splendid dominatrix of the House of the Governess, through the most diverse and peculiar life experiences: college student, lap dancer, top model and finally "Lady S", the talented profiteer of weakness and human perversions. The weapons she uses to win complete freedom and material success are her extraordinary beauty and her bisexual nature which permit her to seduce, and at times, to love men and women. The three narrative levels - the narrator, Helene and the detective - and the enigmatic finale make the novel somewhat singular.

Book The Lady from the Black Lagoon

Download or read book The Lady from the Black Lagoon written by Mallory O'Meara and published by Harlequin. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This acclaimed biography shines a light on a trailblazing woman who created a classic movie monster—and the author’s quest to rescue her from obscurity. As a teenager, Mallory O’Meara was thrilled to discover that one of her favorite movies, Creature from the Black Lagoon, featured a monster designed by a woman, Milicent Patrick. But while Patrick should have been hailed as a pioneer in the genre, there was little information available about her. As O’Meara discovered, Patrick’s contribution had been claimed by a jealous male colleague and her career had been cut short. No one even knew if she was still alive. As a young woman working in the horror film industry, O’Meara set out to right the wrong, and in the process discovered the full, fascinating story of an ambitious, artistic woman ahead of her time. Patrick’s contribution to special effects proved to be just the latest chapter in a remarkable, unconventional life, from her youth growing up in the shadow of Hearst Castle, to her career as one of Disney’s first female animators. And at last, O’Meara discovered what really had happened to Patrick after The Creature’s success, and where she went. A true-life detective story and a celebration of a forgotten feminist trailblazer, Mallory O’Meara’s The Lady from the Black Lagoon establishes Patrick in her rightful place in film history while calling out a Hollywood culture where little has changed since. • Author : María Del Socorro Castañeda-Liles
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018
  • ISBN : 0190280395
  • Pages : 297 pages

Download or read book Our Lady of Everyday Life written by María Del Socorro Castañeda-Liles and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Mexican Catholic women in the United States, devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe-La Virgen-is a necessary aspect of their cultural identity. In this masterful ethnography, Mar a Del Socorro Casta eda-Liles considers three generations of Mexican-origin women between the ages of 18 and 82. She examines the Catholic beliefs the women inherited from their mothers and how these beliefs become the template from which they first learn to see themselves as people of faith. She also offers a comprehensive analysis of how Catholicism creates a culture in which Mexican-origin women learn how to be "good girls" in a manner that reduces their agency to rubble. Through the nexus of faith and lived experience, these women develop a type of Mexican Catholic imagination that helps them challenge the sanctification of shame, guilt, and aguante (endurance at all cost). This imagination allows these women to transgress strict notions of what a good Catholic woman should be while retaining life-giving aspects of Catholicism. This transgression is most visible in their relationship to La Virgen, which is a fluid and deeply engaged process of self-awareness in everyday life.
