This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and Her Times Hen I undertook to write a Memoir of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, I had little hope that any con siderable gleanings, in the shape of unpublished letters, would have been left by former workers in the same field. By the kindness of the Earl of Harrowby, however, I was permitted to examine the Wortley Montagu Manuscripts at Sandon Hall, and among these I found four or five hundred unpublished letters, many of great interest, relating to the first half of the eighteenth century. Lady Mary was responsible for upwards of a hundred Of these, and Mr. Wortley for fifty or sixty, the remainder being written by relations, or by friends of the family. My heartiest thanks are due to Lord Harrowby for permission to copy the most interesting letters, and also to reproduce his whole length portrait of Lady Mary by Richardson, which forms the frontispiece to this book. Book Lady Mary Wortley Montagu

Download or read book Lady Mary Wortley Montagu written by Isobel Grundy and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to look at Lady Mary Wortley Montagu's achievement as a vital figure in the women's literary tradition. Robert Halsband's book on her life, the sixth this century and published in 1956, was the first to apply scholarly techniques to establishing the facts. The inaccurateaccounts given before Halsband testify to Lady Mary's compelling interest as a woman who wrote, travelled, campaigned publicly for medical advance, gossiped, and was involved in high-profile literary quarrels. Knowledge of her life has made considerable gains since Halsband, as understanding of theissues involved in trying to move between the roles of proper lady and woman writer has increased enormously. This life fruitfully exploits the tension between literary history and feminist reading. Isobel Grundy highlights Montagu's adolescent longing for literary fame, her growing understandingof the implications of this for gender and class imperatives, the frustrations and concessions involved in her collaborations with male writers, the punitive responses of society, the gaps at every stage of her life between her ascertainable circumstances and her construction of herself in lettersand other writings. The book situates those writings in relation to her own theorizing and her very wide reading in women's texts as well as men's. Finally, it looks at a range of contemporary and near-contemporary responses.

Excerpt: ...(if I may nse so familiar an expression); and if I had not, I should have been very much moved at the tragical end of an only son, born after being so long desired, and at length killed by want of good management, weaning him in the beginning of the winter. Adieu, dear Lady Rich; continue to write to me, and believe none of your goodness is lost upon Your, etc. TO THE COUNTESS OF MAR. Blanfeenburg, Dec. 17, O. S. 17tO. I Received yours, dear sister, the very day I left Hanover. You may easily imagine I was then in too great a hurry to answer it; but you see I take the first opportunity of doing myself that pleasure. I came here the 15th, very late at night, after a terrible journey, in the worst roads and weather that ever poor traveller suffered. I have taken this little fatigue merely to oblige the reigning Empress, and carry a message from her Imperial Majesty to the Duchess, of Rlankenburg, her mother, who is a princess of great address and good-breeding, and may be still called a fine woman. It was so late when I came to this town, I did not think it proper to disturb the Duke and Duchess with the news of my arrival; so I look up my quarters in a misera-r ble inn: but as soon as I had sent my compliments to their highnesses, they immediately sent me their own coach and six horses, which had however enough to do to draw us up the very high hill on which the castle is situated. The Duchess is extremely obliging to me, and this little court is not without its diversions. The Duke tallys at basset every night; and the Duchess tells me, she is so well pleased with my company, that it makes her play less than she used to do. I should find it very difficult to steal time to write, if she was not now at church, where I cannot wait on her, ..

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Best Letters of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu These letters of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu are selected from the edition of W. Moy Thomas, which is based on Lord Wharncliffe's edition of 1837, printed mainly from the original letters. In selecting, the editor has had in view, first, the literary attractiveness of the letters; secondly, the light they throw on Lady Mary's personality; thirdly, their value as free-hand pictures of the time. Comments and notes of the previous editors, Mr. Thomas or Lord Wharncliffe, may be distinguished by their initials. It is needless to say that no pretensions to scholarship are made by this little volume. I have sometimes found it necessary to omit portions of letters, but I have not presumed to chasten Lady Mary's style, any more than I have ventured to alter her eighteenth-century grammar. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 300 years ago, in April 1721, a smallpox epidemic was raging in England. Lady Mary Wortley Montagu knew that she could save her 3-year-old daughter using the process of inoculation. She had witnessed this at first hand in Turkey, while she was living there as the wife of the British ambassador. She also knew that by inoculating - making her daughter the first person protected in the West - she would face opposition from doctors, politicians and clerics. Her courageous action eventually led to the eradication of smallpox and the prevention of millions of deaths. But Mary was more than a scientific campaigner. She mixed with the greatest politicians, writers, artists and thinkers of her day. She was also an important early feminist, writing powerfully and provocatively about the position of women. She was best friends with the poet Alexander Pope. They collaborated on a series of poems, which made her into a household name, an 'It Girl'. But their friendship turned sour and he used his pen to vilify her publicly.Aristocratic by birth, Mary chose to elope with Edward Wortley Montagu, whom she knew she did not love, so as to avoid being forced into marrying someone else. In middle age, her marriage stale, she fell for someone young enough to be her son - and, unknown to her, bisexual. She set off on a new life with him abroad. When this relationship failed, she stayed on in Europe, narrowly escaping the coercive control of an Italian conman. After twenty-two years abroad, she returned home to London to die. The son-in-law she had dismissed as a young man had meanwhile become Prime Minister.
