Book Governance and Multiculturalism

Download or read book Governance and Multiculturalism written by Catherine Koerner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-14 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key intervention in the growing critical literature on race, this volume examines the social construction of race in contemporary Australia through the lenses of Indigenous sovereignty, nationhood, and whiteness. Informed by insights from white Australians in rural contexts, Koerner and Pillay attempt to answer how race shapes those who identify as white Australian; how those who self-identify thusly relate to the nation, multiculturalism, and Indigenous Sovereignties; and how white Australians understand and experience their own racialized position and its privilege. This “insider perspective” on the continuing construction of whiteness in Australia is analyzed and challenged through Indigenous Sovereign theoretical standpoints and voices. Ultimately, this investigation of the social construction of race not only extends conceptualizations of multiculturalism, but also informs governance policy in the light of changing national identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Bethea’s book conveys the story of an amazingly ambitious attempt to preserve the humanities while also saving the future of disadvantaged high school students in Chicago. … Highly recommended.” — Library Journal (starred review) The Pushkin Project tells the story of how a Russian studies professor changes course late in his career by reeducating himself in evolutionary thought and founding a summer institute that partners with inner-city high schools to implement a new set of learning strategies for underserved youth. These “cognitive cross-training” strategies involve introducing students from Hispanic and Black neighborhoods in the west and south sides of Chicago to the Russian culture and language, with an emphasis on poet, playwright, and novelist Alexander Pushkin. Through the lens of modern evolutionary thought, students adopt not only a new and different language and culture, but also a different sort of literary hero, one whose African heritage within the majority culture speaks to them directly. This inspiring and compelling story provides fascinating insights into Russia's national poet, brings the sciences and humanities together, and provides new directions in teaching young people from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.

This book was released on 2015-04-19 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Screen Savers II is John DiLeo's three-part grab bag of classic movies, beginning with his extensive essays about ten remarkable and underappreciated movies, as in the first Screen Savers, and representing a variety of genres and stars such as Barbara Stanwyck, James Stewart, Ginger Rogers, and DiLeo favorite Joel McCrea. Part Two collects and categorizes posts from DiLeo's classic-film blog screensaversmovies.com, containing his musings on classics revisited, sleepers and stinkers, films old and new, plus his memorial tributes to Hollywood notables. Part Three might be called a delayed bonus round to DiLeo's 1999 quiz book, with all-new matching quizzes. Book Clockwork Liza

Download or read book Clockwork Liza written by Martin Wimmer and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-09-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Actress, singer, musical theater star, gay icon: Liza Minnelli. Always citing the past but acting in present, her image is an oddity of the entertainment industry. Private background and acting roles flow together in the case of Minnelli who was born into the American show business in 1946. But she is more than "Cabaret", Great American Songbook, Broadway and drag model. This book is neither another sentimental biography of her so-called tragic private life nor a pure scientific examination. It simply aims to analyze her single fields of work in theater, film, television, recording studio and on concert stage that all perform together like a clockwork.
