  • ISBN : 077486589X
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Women Film and Law written by Suzanne Bouclin and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entertainment and profit constitute the driving forces behind most popular representations of incarcerated women. Some cinematic representations, however, and the women-in-prison genre especially, can generate complex legal meanings and leave viewers feeling unsettled about women’s incarceration. Focusing on five exemplary films and one television series, from 1933 to the present, Women, Film, and Law asks how fictional representations explore, shape, and refine beliefs about women’s incarceration. Suzanne Bouclin convincingly argues that popular depictions of women’s prisons can illuminate multiple forms of marginalization and oppression experienced by women in conflict with the law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When outlaws in the Nueces Strip ruthlessly massacre innocents by the light of every full moon, Texas Ranger C. W. Wallace is dispatched to stop the next bloody murder. The crime and brutality rampant in the 1877 South Texas brush country threatens people in every community, but using Texas Rangers to combat the problem is as controversial as the violence itself, so C. W. rides alone and is rarely welcomed where he goes. To track the cattle thieves, he and other Rangers need the civilian population to become their extra eyes and ears. Clues at an isolated homestead suggest that a secretive young widow could be a valuable resource, but C. W. is hesitant to trust her. In an effort to identify the ringleaders, C. W. and the widow, Esther, ride breakneck for the border and illegally cross the Rio Grande into Mexico. But disaster plagues them, and C. W. realizes Esther is herself a target for death, even as his affections turn toward her. Now Ranger Wallace must do all he can to prevent Esther’s murder and discover where the marauders have planned the next moonlight massacre.

Book In a Lonely Street

Download or read book In a Lonely Street written by Frank Krutnik and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-10-19 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking issue with many orthodox views of Film Noir, Frank Krutnik argues for a reorientation of this compulsively engaging area of Hollywood cultural production. Krutnik recasts the films within a generic framework and draws on recent historical and theoretical research to examine both the diversity of film noir and its significance within American popular culture of the 1940s. He considers classical Hollywood cinema, debates on genre, and the history of the emergence of character in film noir, focusing on the hard-boiled' crime fiction of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler and James M. Cain as well as the popularisationof Freudian psychoanalysis; and the social and cultural upheavals of the 1940s. The core of this book however concerns the complex representationof masculinity in the noir tough' thriller, and where and how gender interlocks with questions of genre. Analysing in detail major thrillers like The Maltese Falcon, Double Indemnity, Out of the Past and The Killers , alongside lesser known but nonetheless crucial films as Stranger on the Third Floor, Pitfall and Dead Reckoning Krutnik has produced a provocative and highly readable study of one of Hollywood most perennially fascinating groups of films.
