Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in Love is a novel by British author D. H. Lawrence published in 1920. It is a sequel to his earlier novel The Rainbow (1915), and follows the continuing loves and lives of the Brangwen sisters, Gudrun and Ursula. Gudrun Brangwen, an artist, pursues a destructive relationship with Gerald Crich, an industrialist. Lawrence contrasts this pair with the love that develops between Ursula and Rupert Birkin, an alienated intellectual who articulates many opinions associated with the author. The emotional relationships thus established are given further depth and tension by an unadmitted homoerotic attraction between Gerald and Rupert. The novel ranges over the whole of British society at the time of the First World War and eventually ends high up in the snows of the Swiss Alps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "Lady Chatterley's Lover (The Unexpurgated Edition)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. This novel by D. H. Lawrence was first published in 1928 and subsequently banned. Lady Chatterley's Lover is one of the most subversive novels in English Literature. The first edition was printed privately in Florence, Italy, with assistance from Pino Orioli; an unexpurgated edition could not be published openly in the United Kingdom until 1960. (A private edition was issued by Inky Stephensen's Mandrake Press in 1929.) The book soon became notorious for its story of the physical relationship between a working-class man and an upper-class woman, its explicit descriptions of sex, and its use of then-unprintable words. Lady Chatterley's Lover was inspired by the long-standing affair between Frieda, Lawrence's German wife, and an Italian peasant who eventually became her third husband; Lawrence's struggle with sexual impotence; and the circumstances of his and Frieda's courtship and the early years of their marriage.

Book Lady Chatterley s Lover Annotated

Download or read book Lady Chatterley s Lover Annotated written by David Herbert Lawrence and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lady Chatterley's Lover is a novel by D. H. Lawrence written in 1928. Printed privately in Florence in 1928, it was not printed in the United Kingdom until 1960 (other than in an underground edition issued by Inky Stephensen's Mandrake Press in 1929). Lawrence considered calling this book Tenderness at one time and made significant alterations to the original manuscript in order to make it palatable to readers. It has been published in three different versions. The publication of the book caused a scandal due to its explicit sex scenes, including previously banned four-letter words, and perhaps because the lovers were a working-class male and an aristocratic female. The story is said to have originated from events in Lawrence's own unhappy domestic life, and he took inspiration for the settings of the book from Ilkeston in Derbyshire where he lived for a while. According to some critics the fling of Lady Ottoline Morrell with "Tiger," a young stonemason who came to carve plinths for her garden statues, also influenced the story.

Book LADY CHATTERLEY S LOVER D H Lawrence

Download or read book LADY CHATTERLEY S LOVER D H Lawrence written by D.H. Lawrence and published by Lebooks Editora. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " The Lover of Lady Chatterley" (Lady Chatterley's Lover) is a work always remembered as a great literary classic. The novella was written by D. H. Lawrence in 1928 and had its first printing done confidentially in Florence. The publication caused scandal due to its sex scenes, and Lawrence had to make alterations to the original manuscript to make it more acceptable to readers of the time. As the title suggests, the theme of "The Lover of Lady Chatterley" is the betrayal of Constance, who is married to the noble Clifford Chatterley. Constance becomes involved in an affair and becomes pregnant by her lover, who belongs to a lower class than hers. Her husband, in turn, is involved with his nurse. The work makes a clear distinction between the two types of relationships, giving the impression that the author's intention was precisely to lead the reader to choose between one or the other. "The Lover of Lady Chatterley" was considered by the French newspaper Le Monde as one of the Hundred Best Books of the 20th Century. It is also part of the famous collection: 1001 Books to Read Before You Die.

Book Nabokov Perversely

Download or read book Nabokov Perversely written by Eric Naiman and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an original and provocative reading of Vladimir Nabokov's work and the pleasures and perils to which its readers are subjected, Eric Naiman explores the significance and consequences of Nabokov's insistence on bringing the issue of art's essential perversity to the fore. Nabokov's fiction is notorious for the interpretive panic it occasions in its readers, the sense that no matter how hard he or she tries, the reader has not gotten Nabokov "right." At the same time, the fictions abound with characters who might be labeled perverts, and questions of sexuality lurk everywhere. Naiman argues that the sexual and the interpretive are so bound together in Nabokov's stories and novels that the reader confronts the fear that there is no stable line between good reading and overreading, and that reading Nabokov well is beset by the exhilaration and performance anxiety more frequently associated with questions of sexuality than of literature. Nabokov's fictions pervert their readers, obligingly training them to twist and turn the text in order to puzzle out its meanings, so that they become not better people but closer readers, assuming all the impudence and potential for shame that sexually oriented close-looking entails. In Nabokov, Perversely, Naiman traces the connections between sex and interpretation in Lolita (which he reads as a perverse work of Shakespeare scholarship), Pnin, Bend Sinister, and Ada. He examines the roots of perverse reading in The Defense and charts the enhanced attention to the connection between sex and metafiction in works translated from the Russian. He also takes on books by other authors—such as Reading Lolita in Tehran—that misguidedly incorporate Nabokov's writing within frameworks of moral usefulness. In a final, extraordinary chapter, Naiman reads Dostoevsky's The Double with Nabokov-trained eyes, making clear the power a strong writer can exert on readers.
