Book excerpt: Gene Stratton-Porter (1863-1924) was an American author, amateur naturalist, wildlife photographer, and one of the earliest women to form a movie studio and production company. She wrote some of the best selling novels and well-received columns in magazines of the day. She became a wildlife photographer, specializing in the birds and moths in one of the last of the vanishing wetlands of the lower Great Lakes Basin. The Limberlost and Wildflower Woods of northeastern Indiana were the laboratory and inspiration for her stories, novels, essays, photography, and movies. Her first attributed novel, The Song of the Cardinal (1903) met with great commercial success. Her novels Freckles (1904) and A Girl of the Limberlost (1909) are set in the wooded wetlands and swamps of the disappearing central Indiana ecosystems she loved and documented. Although Stratton-Porter wanted to focus on nature books, it was her romantic novels that made her famous and generated the finances that allowed her to pursue her nature studies. Her other works include: The Harvester (1911), A Daughter of the Land (1918) and Her Father's Daughter (1921).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laddie is told by "Little Sister", the youngest child of a "Stanton" family of 12 children, and centers around her experiences as the older ones grow up, fall in love and marry. Little Sister loves being outside more than anything – except her big brother Laddie, her hero and favorite sibling. Laddie's and Little Sister's mother and father love each other and their children with all their hearts and who love God most of all. Their main Christian precept is that God is Love and they show their love to their family, their friends, their neighbors, and even the strangers who come to live and resist becoming part of the community. Laddie is considered Stratton-Porter's autobiographical novel. The title character is modeled after author's deceased older brother, Leander, whom Stratton-Porter nicknamed Laddie. As in Stratton-Porter's own family, Laddie is connected with the land and identifies with their father's vocation of farming.

Book excerpt: Laddie: A True Blue Story follows the lives and adventures of families in Midwest rural America during the late 19th century. First published in 1913, Laddie follows the titular character, and the adventures and ethos toward life he brings to the locality. The narrator is 'Little Sister', a young girl whose good perceptions and outspokenness occasionally lands her in hot water in the quiet and unassuming country community. A charming story which depicts life in Indiana towards the close of the 1800s, Laddie shows the United States as it was during a bygone era. The natural world, for which Porter had great personal affinity, is described with a simple and sensuous beauty, enriching the narrative. Owing to the flow of adjectives, we feel immersed in the story and its period: even the food, clothing and households of the families receive great description. Where the characters are concerned, the story told emphasises the traditional family and Christian values which were strong and influential during the era. Poetry and frequent allusions to the characters' religiosity gives the book further authenticity as a portrait of country life at the time. Although old-fashioned, this novel paints a sweet and happy picture of country living, with enough mystery and adventure to keep the plot engaging.

Expedited shipping High Quality Paper Made in USA Standard Font size of 10 for all books 30 Days Money Back Guarantee BEWARE of Low-quality sellers Don't buy cheap paperbacks just to save a few dollars. Most of them use low-quality papers & binding. Their pages fall off easily. Some of them even use very small font size of 6 or less to increase their profit margin. It makes their books completely unreadable. How is this book unique? Unabridged (100% Original content) Font adjustments & biography included Illustrated Laddie: A True Blue Story by Gene Stratton-Porter Loosely based on Stratton-Porter's own childhood, Laddie is a double tale -- the classic poor-boy/rich-girl romance and the story of a child of nature and her idyllic childhood. This is the delightful story of a loving family narrated from the perspective of the "Little Sister." The story was published in 1913 and probably takes place in the mid to late 1800's. We get to appreciate Little Sister's love of the land, the birds, her family and particularly her love and devotion to her oldest brother and hero, Laddie. While we enjoy seeing how a loving family associates, disciplines, and cares for one another with a love and belief of God and the Savior, we also see some contrasting views of a family whose father has forsaken God and the poison he carries while holding a long grudge.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laddie: Story Blue Story Ave I got a Little Sister anywhere in this house? Inquired Laddie at the door, in his most coaxing voice. Yes sir, I answered, dropping the trousers I was making for Hezekiah, my pet bluejay, and running as fast as I could. There was no telling what minute May might take it into her head that she was a little sister and reach him first. Maybe he wanted me to do something for him, and I loved to wait on Laddie.
