Book Wildlife Forensic Investigation

Download or read book Wildlife Forensic Investigation written by John E. Cooper and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-04-25 with total page 773 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wildlife forensics is the application of forensic science to the conservation and protection of non-domesticated animals, both in the wild and in captivity. Providing an in-depth introduction to this rapidly evolving field, Wildlife Forensic Investigation: Principles and Practice also chronicles aspects of the history of management, conservation, and environmental protection, with an emphasis on their global importance in the twenty-first century. The book examines the crucial role of wildlife forensic investigation with regard to live animals, dead animals and samples and covers national, regional, and international legislation. While the text particularly focuses on forensic science as it relates to wild animals, it also includes mention of plants and habitats because of their relevance to conservation. The book discusses animal welfare as well as the damage that can be inflicted on humans and property by wildlife. Offering access to sound evidence based on good science and obtained using the best available practices, the book is enhanced by case studies from experts who describe some of their own work. This resource is essential for those involved in a range of endeavours, including investigating wildlife crime, identifying animal remains, ascertaining the circumstances of death of wild species, and other legal proceedings and activities concerning wildlife. The forensic skills described in this book can be applied to a wide range of activities (not necessarily involving the legal process), including environmental impact assessments, insurance claims, governmental and other enquiries, checking of trading standards and the inspection of (for instance) pet-shops, animal boarding establishments, and zoological collections. The authors point out that one of the most important requirements of those persons involved in wildlife forensic work is to retain an open mind. Such personnel should also be conscious of new developments and evolving techniques and be able to anticipate situations where their investigative and scientific skills might be used to advantage—so-called "horizon scanning". Examples of these are given.

Book Recovery Strategy for the Beluga Whale Delphinapterus Leucas St Lawrence Estuary Population in Canada

Download or read book Recovery Strategy for the Beluga Whale Delphinapterus Leucas St Lawrence Estuary Population in Canada written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The St. Lawrence Estuary beluga population was listed as threatened under SARA in May 2005. In 1986, Fisheries and Oceans Canada set up the Ad Hoc Committee for the conservation of the St. Lawrence beluga, the objectives of which were to identify factors that threatened the population's survival and to make recommendations to favour its recovery. This project was carried out jointly by Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Environment Canada from 1988 to 1993 as part of the St. Lawrence Action Plan (SLAP), with the following objectives: to minimize disturbance to the beluga population, to combat the discharge and spread of toxic chemical products, and to conduct further research on the beluga. A fourth objective was added in 1989: to facilitate public access to information in order to raise awareness in Canada and Quebec of the St. Lawrence beluga. This document includes information about recovery and background of the beluga whale in the St. Lawrence Estuary.--Includes text from document.

Healthy marine ecosystems - the goods and services that they provide - are of vital importance to human wellbeing. There is a pressing need for a global synthesis of marine conservation issues and approaches. Book Marine Environmental Assessment of the Estuary and Gulf of St Lawrence

Download or read book Marine Environmental Assessment of the Estuary and Gulf of St Lawrence written by Louise White and published by Dartmouth, N.S. : Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Toxic Chemicals Program. This book was released on 1997 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This assessment is a summary of the accumulated scientific understanding of the estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence. It discusses the extent of anthropogenic modifications to this marine environment, points out principal uncertainties that hinder our understanding, and identifies important regional environmental issues. Many assessments attempt to provide easy-to-understand information to a wide, non-specialist audience. Others are directed more specifically to scientists, but include a conclusions section written for non-scientists. This document offers something of a middle approach: it is intended to be understood by a non-specialist audience, albeit one with a general knowledge of contemporary science. At the same time, it gives the professional scientist a broad-scale synthesis of current information.
