Book The Fire Signals of Lachish

Download or read book The Fire Signals of Lachish written by Israel Finkelstein and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2011-06-23 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume honoring Tel Aviv University archaeologist David Ussishkin, colleagues and students representing some of the major names in the field today present 25 essays on a variety of topics of interest to the honoree. The contributions cover a range of periods from the Late Bronze Age through the Persian period and disparate subjects such as Judahite bullae, destruction levels at Megiddo, a diversity of results from various tells in Israel (and one in Jordan), Egyptian influence on Canaan, the city of Jerusalem and its temple, and much on the archaeology of the Shephelah, an area of particular interest to the honoree—who is best known for his excavations at Tell ed-Duweir, the site of biblical Lachish. The volume takes its title from a reference in one of the Lachish ostraca. From 1966 until his retirement in 2004, David Ussishkin taught in the Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at Tel Aviv University. Between 1975 and 1978, he served as Chair of the Department, and between 1980 and 1984 as the Director of the Institute of Archaeology. In 1996, he was nominated incumbent of the Austria Chair in Archaeology of the Land of Israel in the Biblical Period. He served as the editor of Tel Aviv: The Journal of Archaeology of Tel Aviv University for 30 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mighty Assyrian army has invaded the tiny kingdom of Judah to crush the rebellion against the great king Sennacherib. After a long siege, the Assyrians capture the fortified city of Lachish. They show no mercy to the vanquished people. But one girl is able to escape-Rivkah. She hides in the hills and finds refuge in the company of other survivors. In a devastated land they seek to rebuild their lives. The words of the prophet Micah-spoken to the people over many years-speak to Rivkah anew, allowing her to see the events in a new light. Drawing on extensive scholarly research, Daughter of Lachish brings to life the world of Ancient Judah. It melds archaeology and biblical studies to tell a story of the people who first heard the words of the Psalms and Prophets. It is a story of one girl, her search for a place in the world, and her quest to make sense of loss and joy. Through her eyes we experience the daily tasks, the seasons of the agricultural year, the bonds that hold together a household and a village, and the tensions that threaten to tear them apart. You who live in Lachish, harness the chariot. You were the beginning of sin to the Daughter of Zion, for the transgressions of Israel were found in you. Micah 1:13

Book Biblical Lachish

Download or read book Biblical Lachish written by David Ussishkin and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical Lachish was one of the most important cities in the Land of Israel for over 3,000 years. It played a central historical role during the period of rule by the kings of Canaan, followed by the kings of Israel and Judah. In the second millennium BCE Lachish was a large Canaanite city-state and during the Kingdom of Judah, a fortified city, second in importance only to Jerusalem. During Sennacherib's campaign to Judah, the Assyrian army lay siege to Lachish and conquered the city in a fierce battle. The unique importance of Lachish, the extensive archaeological excavations conducted there and the finds uncovered have made Tel Lachish a key site for the study of the history of the Land of Israel in the Biblical period. This book presents a general readership with the history of Lachish in light of the excavations conducted at the site, focusing upon the excavations carried out from 1973 to 1994 under the direction of David Ussishkin.
