Book Apparently There Were Complaints

Download or read book Apparently There Were Complaints written by Sharon Gless and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-11-29 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emmy Award–winning actress Sharon Gless tells all in this laugh-out-loud, juicy, “unforgettably memorable” (Lily Tomlin) memoir about her five decades in Hollywood, where she took on some of the most groundbreaking roles of her time. Anyone who has seen Sharon Gless act in Cagney & Lacey, Queer as Folk, Burn Notice, and countless other shows and movies, knows that she’s someone who gives every role her all. She holds nothing back in Apparently There Were Complaints, a hilarious, deeply personal memoir that spills all about Gless’s five decades in Hollywood. A fifth-generation Californian, Sharon Gless knew from a young age that she wanted to be an actress. After some rocky teenage years that included Sharon’s parents’ divorce and some minor (and not-so-minor) rebellion, Gless landed a coveted spot as an exclusive contract player for Universal Studios. In 1982, she stepped into the role of New York Police Detective Christine Cagney for the series Cagney & Lacey, which eventually reached an audience of 30 million weekly viewers and garnered Gless with two Emmy Awards. The show made history as the first hour-long drama to feature two women in the leading roles. Gless continued to make history long after Cagney & Lacey was over. In 2000, she took on the role of outrageous Debbie Novotny in Queer as Folk. Her portrayal of a devoted mother to a gay son and confidant to his gay friends touched countless hearts and changed the definition of family for millions of viewers. Apparently There Were Complaints delves into Gless’s remarkable career and explores Gless’s complicated family, her struggles with alcoholism, and her fear of romantic commitment as well as her encounters with some of Hollywood’s biggest names. Brutally honest and incredibly relatable, Gless puts it all out on the page in the same way she has lived—never with moderation.

Book excerpt: Lonely Lacey Garrett leads a quiet life in Virginia as the office manager of a mining company. New foreman Sam Butler takes her on a whirlwind courtship that leads to marriage. But all is not as it seems, and Lacey discovers shocking secrets hidden in their attic. Just when she begins to question Sam's true identity, Lacey's secure world quickly unravels. In disgrace, Lacey escapes her humdrum existence in search of a new life. On her journey of self-discovery, Lacey, an avid movie buff, searches for the home of favorite actor, Chant Winslow, an easy-going, motorcycle-riding, Tennessee farm owner who lives far from the glitz of Hollywood. A freak accident intertwines Lacey and Chant's lives, and she eventually becomes his personal assistant. Lacey falls in love with Chant, despite his involvement with gorgeous supermodel, Jillian Hathaway, who is determined to hold onto her man. Soon, common enemies form an unholy alliance in their plot to destroy Lacey. A misunderstanding forces would-be lovers apart, but a reunion in New Orleans finally consummates their relationship, only to find danger lurking in the shadows. In the thrilling climax, Lacey must decide whether she will realize her "deepest" wishes of living out her true passions or if her past will ruin her heart's desire.

Book Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics for Astronomy

Download or read book Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics for Astronomy written by N. Ageorges and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive optics allows the theoretical limit of angular resolution to be achieved from a large telescope, despite the presence of turbulence. Thus an eight meter class telescope, such as one of the four in the Very Large Telescope operated by ESO in Chile, will in future be routinely capable of an angular resolution of almost 0.01 arcsec, compared tot he present resolution of about 0.5 arcsec for conventional imaging in good condition. All the world's major telescopes either have adaptive optics or are in the process of building AO systems. It turns out that a reasonable fraction of the sky can be observed using adaptive optics, with moderately good imaging quality, provided imaging in done in the near IR. To move out of the near IR, with its relatively poor angular resolution, astronomers need a laser guide star. There is a layer of Na atoms at approximately 90 km altitude that can be excited by a laser to produce such a source, or Rayleigh scattering can be employed lower in the atmosphere. But the production and use of laser guide stars is not trivial, and the key issues determining their successful implementation are discussed here, including the physics of the Na atom, the cone effect, tilt determination, sky coverage, and numerous potential astronomical applications.

Book The Galaxy

  • Author : Gerry Gilmore
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9400939256
  • Pages : 442 pages

Download or read book The Galaxy written by Gerry Gilmore and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Milky Way Galaxy offers a unique opportunity to study the structure and contents of a major stellar system in three dimensions, at high spatial and spectral resolution, and to very large galactocentric distances. This potential can be realised only by statistical surveys of large areas of the sky, and by detailed study of specific regions with exceptional properties, such as the Galactic centre, and of specific classes of object, such as the globular clusters. The acquisition of such data from a variety of ground-based and satellite surveys has been a primary topic of Galactic research for some years. Several such surveys have been completed recently, and have led to a substantial modification of our understanding of Galactic structure and evolution. The importance of the ability of satellite observatories to survey and to study wavelengths which are inaccessible from the ground is evident in the wealth of data discussed and analysed in this volume which is derived from satellites, specifically COS-B, HEAD-I, HEAO-3, IRAS, PIONEER-lO, SAS-2, and TENMA. The cru cial role of ground-based observations to complement and comprehend the satellite data is also well evident. Similarly, the major ground-based studies whose results are reported here illustrate the necessity for carefully conceived and executed very large scale surveys of many types of object and many parts of parameter space before a coherent picture of the Galaxy will be available.

Book New Quests in Stellar Astrophysics The Link Between Stars and Cosmology

Download or read book New Quests in Stellar Astrophysics The Link Between Stars and Cosmology written by Miguel Chávez and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stellar astrophysics still provides the basic framework for deciphering the imprints left over by the evolving universe on all scales. Advances or shortcomings in the former field have direct consequences in our ability to understand the global properties of the latter. This volume contains the most recent updates on a variety of topics that, though independent by themselves, are inevitably connected on a cosmological scale. These include comprehensive articles by leaders in fields extending from stellar atmospheres through properties of the stellar component in the Milky Way up to the stellar environment in high redshift galaxies. The wide coverage of astrophysical themes makes this volume very valuable for researchers and Ph.D. students in astrophysics.

Book You ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey

Download or read book You ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey written by Amber Ruffin and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER AND INDIE NEXT PICK* Writer and performer on Late Night with Seth Meyers Amber Ruffin writes with her sister Lacey Lamar with humor and heart to share absurd anecdotes about everyday experiences of racism. Now a writer and performer on Late Night with Seth Meyers and host of The Amber Ruffin Show, Amber Ruffin lives in New York, where she is no one's First Black Friend and everyone is, as she puts it, "stark raving normal." But Amber's sister Lacey? She's still living in their home state of Nebraska, and trust us, you'll never believe what happened to Lacey. From racist donut shops to strangers putting their whole hand in her hair, from being mistaken for a prostitute to being mistaken for Harriet Tubman, Lacey is a lightning rod for hilariously ridiculous yet all-too-real anecdotes. She's the perfect mix of polite, beautiful, petite, and Black that apparently makes people think "I can say whatever I want to this woman." And now, Amber and Lacey share these entertainingly horrifying stories through their laugh-out-loud sisterly banter. Painfully relatable or shockingly eye-opening (depending on how often you have personally been followed by security at department stores), this book tackles modern-day racism with the perfect balance of levity and gravity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are only three things in the universe that stars can’t manipulate: life, death, and love. So when Calista is pulled from the sky with a wish for true love, her world shatters. Without her alpha star to guide her and her smaller stars to encourage her, Calista feels lost and hopeless when faced with the impossible task set before her. Hidden in the folds of the sleepy town of Shelter Cove, she finds Jack, who makes the best coffee she’s ever had; Lily, who has a smile like sunshine and a heart to match; Grey, who hides behind his music and a charming smile; and Nate and Savanah, who love each other and their friends fiercely. Each one reminds her that humans are just as beautifully unique as the stars. But will making friends help her find true love for a human she doesn’t know? Or will she be forced to face her own fears and feelings about the reality that she may never make it back to the only home she’s ever known?
