Book The Straight Laced Duke Selbourne

Download or read book The Straight Laced Duke Selbourne written by Kasey Michaels and published by Kathryn Seidick. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **PLEASE NOTE: This is the JUST GOOD CLEAN FUN version of INDISCREET by New York Times bestselling romance author Kasey Michaels** For a limited time, get two free books from Kasey > bit.ly/kaseymichaels Sophie Winstead is utterly perfect, from the top of her tousled honey-brown ringlets to the tips of her dainty pink toes. Indeed, any man in London Society would want her. The problem for Sophie lay in what they wanted her from her. For Sophie is the orphaned daughter of one Constance Winstead, the Widow Winstead, mistress of many men during her abbreviated lifetime. Woo her, win her, yes. Marry her? Don’t be ridiculous! When the Duke of Selbourne and his lovely Connie met an extremely public and indiscreet end at a country party, Sophie was crushed by her double loss, for she had grown to love “Uncle Cesse” very much. She cried for days before her only companion (a French courtesan turned lady’s maid), slowly and carefully brought her back to her usual sunny, perfect self. The Duke’s son took refuge in anger, railed at the mess his father had left behind, and swore that he would never, never ever, follow in his father’s irresponsible footsteps. For three long years Bramwell Seaton, the new Duke, toed every line, broke no rules; why, he’d even become engaged to the perfect, staid, beauty who would make him a suitable wife. He might not have been precisely a happy man, but he had managed to rub the tarnish from the family escutcheon. You know what’s coming, right? Bramwell’s father had left behind a mess he could not ignore, and he suddenly found himself reluctantly chaperoning Sophie for the Spring Season. Sophie—accompanied by her maid, her parrot (a bird with the memory of an elephant), and a larcenous monkey —dazzled everyone in the Duke’s household, from his aunt to the lowliest scullery maid. Why, she even gained the approval of Bramwell’s fiancée, who offered to help steer Sophie in avoiding the many pitfalls of polite Society. You know who didn’t have any intention of succumbing to Sophie’s charms. Sophie being who she so naturally was, and Bram being a recent reinvention of the bright, charming man he’d been before his father’s “fall from grace,” it isn’t a question of if the Duke will realize where his true happiness lies, but only one of when. This is the “Just for the fun of it” version of Indiscreet (no explicit sex), and I’m delighted to be able to offer it to all audiences, wishing them joy and giggles as they come along for the journey to romance with Sophie and Bram! Book The Ethics of Abortion

Download or read book The Ethics of Abortion written by Christopher Kaczor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-10-04 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appealing to reason rather than religious belief, this book is the most comprehensive case against the choice of abortion yet published. The Ethics of Abortion critically evaluates all the major grounds for denying fetal personhood, including the views of those who defend not only abortion but also infanticide. It also provides several (non-theological) justifications for the conclusion that all human beings, including those in utero, should be respected as persons. This book also critiques the view that abortion is not wrong even if the human fetus is a person. The Ethics of Abortion examines hard cases for those who are prolife, such as abortion in cases of rape or in order to save the mother’s life, as well as hard cases for defenders of abortion, such as sex selection abortion and the rationale for being “personally opposed” but publically supportive of abortion. It concludes with a discussion of whether artificial wombs might end the abortion debate. Answering the arguments of defenders of abortion, this book provides reasoned justification for the view that all intentional abortions are morally wrong and that doctors and nurses who object to abortion should not be forced to act against their consciences.

Book The Fate of Desire

    Book Details:
  • Author : James S. Hans
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 1990-07-05
  • ISBN : 1438405685
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book The Fate of Desire written by James S. Hans and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1990-07-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fate of Desire examines the problems of living in a decentered world. Assuming that the poststructuralist declaration of the end of man is an essential aspect of our current ways of thinking, the book focuses on the positive values inherent in this shift. In substituting multiplicity and fields of play for identity and hierarchy, and in distinguishing between desire as fullness and desire as lack, Hans argues for a vision of existence that is based on the difficulties Nietzsche posited as an inevitable part of fully affirming the rich but tragic nature of life. These reconceptions of the human scene redefine self-discipline in terms of understanding and loving one's fate. Instead of providing yet one more critique of the flawed values through which the Western world has constituted itself, The Fate of Desire takes up the task of weighing the things of the world anew, revaluing them in terms of our present understanding of our positions in the world. Hans suggests that if we are fated to be driven by desire, and if we are led to accept the ways in which our desire manifests itself according to our own individual fates, there is still every reason to believe that humans can find a productive way of understanding and fully occupying their place in the world.

Book Permitted And Prohibited Desires

Download or read book Permitted And Prohibited Desires written by Anne Allison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Desire is both of and beyond the everyday. In an ad for running shoes, for example, the figure of a man jogging at dawn on the Serengeti Plain both evokes a fantasyof escape and invokes a disciplinary norm to stay fit. The bottom line for thead, of course, is to create a desire to consume, the promise being that with thepurchase of these shoes, the consumer can realize yet also transcend the daily exhortationto perform. To say this differently, there is something both real and phantasmic about desire.Yet this notion seems contradictory. Isn't there a difference between the desireto be fit, for example, which is realizable, realistic, and, in these senses, realand the desire to escape routine everydayness, which, for most of us, is inescapablemost of the time? But is exercise real or phantasmic? Certainly noteveryone works out, and even those who make exercise a part of their reality maydo so in order to pursue a fantasy about themselves. And are escapes from dailyroutines phantasmic or real? An escape from the everyday is far more realizablefor some people than even fitness. But here too what is fantasy blends into (andbecomes indistinguishable from) the real: A vacation away from work may be ameans of ensuring a higher level of work performance when one returns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is drowning in words. Some four million are books published every year, plus e-books, audiobooks, and magazines, not to mention television, movies, and videos; blogs, podcasts, and social media; and an estimated six to ten thousand ads forced on every American every day! But where--amidst this bewildering cacophony of words--shall wisdom be found? (Job 28:12). That long-ago question from Job is more relevant today than ever. And so is his long-ago answer: Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom (Job 28:28; cf. Prov 1:7; 9:10; Ps 111:10). That's biblical bedrock for building a life--a God-centered life. A life of significance and satisfaction, humility and hope, confidence and joy. The book of Proverbs gives you the tools, and the book you hold in your hands will help you use the tools. Solomon Day by Day won't change your life, but it will change the way you look at the proverbs. And the proverbs will change your life!

Book excerpt: One of The Washington Post's 10 Best Books of 2021 * One of NPR's Best Books of 2021 * New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice * Long-listed for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize “Dizzyingly original, fiercely funny, deeply wise.” —Celeste Ng, #1 bestselling author of Little Fires Everywhere “Sanjena Sathian’s Gold Diggers is a work of 24-karat genius.” —Ron Charles, The Washington Post How far would you go for a piece of the American dream? A magical realist coming-of-age story, Gold Diggers skewers the model minority myth to tell a hilarious and moving story about immigrant identity, community, and the underside of ambition. A floundering second-generation teenager growing up in the Bush-era Atlanta suburbs, Neil Narayan is funny and smart but struggles to bear the weight of expectations of his family and their Asian American enclave. He tries to want their version of success, but mostly, Neil just wants his neighbor across the cul-de-sac, Anita Dayal. When he discovers that Anita is the beneficiary of an ancient, alchemical potion made from stolen gold—a “lemonade” that harnesses the ambition of the gold’s original owner—Neil sees his chance to get ahead. But events spiral into a tragedy that rips their community apart. Years later in the Bay Area, Neil still bristles against his community's expectations—and finds he might need one more hit of that lemonade, no matter the cost. Sanjena Sathian’s astonishing debut offers a fine-grained, profoundly intelligent, and bitingly funny investigation into what's required to make it in America. Soon to be a series produced by Mindy Kaling!

Book Sensational Modernism

Download or read book Sensational Modernism written by Joseph B. Entin and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging the conventional wisdom that the 1930s were dominated by literary and photographic realism, Sensational Modernism uncovers a rich vein of experimental work by politically progressive artists. Examining images by photographers such as Weegee and Aaron Siskind and fiction by writers such as William Carlos Williams, Richard Wright, Tillie Olsen, and Pietro di Donato, Joseph Entin argues that these artists drew attention to the country's most vulnerable residents by using what he calls an "aesthetic of astonishment," focused on startling, graphic images of pain, injury, and prejudice. Traditional portrayals of the poor depicted stoic, passive figures of sentimental suffering or degraded but potentially threatening figures in need of supervision. Sensational modernists sought to shock middle-class audiences into new ways of seeing the nation's impoverished and outcast populations. The striking images these artists created, often taking the form of contorted or disfigured bodies drawn from the realm of the tabloids, pulp magazines, and cinema, represented a bold, experimental form of social aesthetics. Entin argues that these artists created a willfully unorthodox brand of vernacular modernism in which formal avant-garde innovations were used to delineate the conditions, contradictions, and pressures of life on the nation's fringes.

Book Desire in Ren Girard and Jesus

Download or read book Desire in Ren Girard and Jesus written by William L. Newell and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-03-22 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William L. Newell presents a comprehensive analysis of René Girard’s work on the origins of culture and the depths of human desire. Girard makes no claim toward a theory of religion, but he lays the groundwork for a postmodern theory of it. Girard’s desire concerns fallen humanity, those insanely imitating what they lacked, and his use of the Bible brings back into play the idea of the holy in secular academia. Newell challenges Girard’s interpretation of Jesus’s Passion as non-sacrificial and he offers a close reading of Girard’s works on mimetic desire, scape-goating, and sacrifice, and Newell creates breakthrough theology on Jesus in the Excursus. Girard makes no claim to having a theory of religion, but he lays the groundwork for a postmodern theory of it, and in this book, Newell seeks to begin a theory of “the end of the sacred” and what will be in its place: the holy.
