Download or read book Labyrinthine Defects as Shown by Ataxia and Caloric Tests written by Alfred R. Fregly and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groups of individuals with various loss or disturbance of labyrinthine function (N=49) and patients who had vertigo as a major symptom or complaint (N=76) were very different from a control group of normals (N=240) in the frequency with which their ataxia test battery performance scores and threshold caloric test responses fell within the lowest 5 per cent of the normative distributions. Generally, caloric test results could be predicted from ataxia test results better than results of ataxia tests from those of caloric tests in the various groups. In those individuals with total or near total loss of labyrinthine function all test findings were in perfect or near perfect agreement in relation to the 5th percentile cut-off criterion employed. This book was released on 1967 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perception of the visual horizontal by observers in five different combinations of head and body position was studied to determine the effect of 20-degree body tilts. Both normal and labyrinthine-defective observers made five settings to the visual horizontal for each condition using a goggle device which presented a collimated line of light to the right eye while the other eye was covered. The results showed no significant constant errors in the settings by either group, and it is suggested that the absence of the E-phenomenon was due primarily to adequate contact cues and kinesthetic cues. The data also makes it clear that vestibular information is not required for veridical perception of the visual horizontal under these experimental conditions. (Author).

Download or read book An Ataxia Test Battery Not Requiring the Use of Rails written by Alfred R. Fregly and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Normative standards on a new quantitative ataxia (postural equilibrium) test battery using rails of various widths as platforms were presented in a previous report. The present study reports normative standards of performance on a related battery of ataxia tests with the floor as a platform and employed routinely in the vestibular research program of this laboratory. Significant decreases in performance with age and an apparent superior performance by males were found. The scores of bilateral and unilateral vestibular-defective individuals and of patients referred for testing because of symptoms of vertigo departed significantly from the normative standards. The usefulness of individual tests as well as of the test battery in clinical and research situations was made apparent. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is easy to underrate the importance of a sensory system whose receptor is buried deep within the skull and of whose performance we are usually not aware. It is only when it malfunctions that we know we have a ves tibular system! Unraveling the mechanisms by which activation of the vestibular labyrinth exerts its varied effects presents a great challenge, which increasing numbers of investigators are rushing to meet. At this time a period of transition appears to have been reached. On the one hand, physiological and anatomical techniques have provided extensive information about the properties of the receptor and of some of the path ways that link it to the musculature. On the other hand, extensive be havioral and psychophysical studies provide different insights into the mechanisms involved in vestibular reflexes. Until recently there has been relatively 1ittle interaction between the practitioners of these two widely different approaches. It has been our goal to assess and describe the progress that has been made in both areas and, when possible, to make a synthesis of the results. As will be seen, numerous questions are raised in the process, and we hope that they will help in pointing the way to further investigations. We are grateful to the authors and publishers who gave permission to reproduce many of the figures, and to our colleagues who have read and commented on all or part of the manuscript. Victor J.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The function of the vestibular system is not as obvious as those of vision, hearing, touch or smell. Vestibular dysfunction, however, is clearly apparent where lesions are present. It is probably for this reason that the vestibular sense was not discovered until the nineteenth century and that clinicians have continued to playa major role in basic vestibular research right up to the present. The relationship between basic and clinical research is certainly stronger in the vesti bular field than in that of tactile sensation, for instance, as testified by the work of clinicians as MENIERE, BREUER, BARANY, DEKLEIJN and FRENZEL. In this respect the situation is similar in vestibular physiology and in endocrinology, and for the same reason. This second part of the vestibular volume of the Handbook of Sensory Physio logy will be of interest to neurologists, otologists, neurosurgeons, ophthalmologists and physiotherapists on the one hand, and psychologists, physiologists, engineers and aviation specialists on the other. For a full understanding of Part 2, it is necessary to have assimilated the basic anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of Part 1.
