Book The labour movement in Lebanon

Download or read book The labour movement in Lebanon written by Lea Bou Khater and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The labour movement in Lebanon: Power on hold narrates the history of the Lebanese labour movement from the early twentieth century to today. Bou Khater demonstrates that trade unionism in the country has largely been a failure, for reasons including state interference, tactical co-optation, and the strategic use of sectarianism by an oligarchic elite, together with the structural weakness of a service-based laissez-faire economy. Drawing on a vast body of Arabic-language primary sources and difficult-to-access archives, the book’s conclusions are significant not only for trade unionism, but also for new forms of workers’ organisations and social movements in Lebanon and beyond. The Lebanese case study presented here holds significant implications for the wider Arab world and for comparative studies of labour. This authoritative history of the labour movement in Lebanon is vital reading for scholars of trade unionism, Lebanese politics, and political economy.

Book excerpt: A wide-reaching analysis of post-World War II U.S. policy in Lebanon posits that the politics of oil and pipelines figured far more significantly in U.S. relations with Lebanon than previously believed. By reevaluating U.S.-Lebanese relations within the context of America's collaborative intervention with the Lebanese ruling elite, Gendzier aptly demonstrates how oil, power, and politics drove U.S. policy as well as influenced the development of the state and region of Lebanon.

Book Gender Inequality in the Workplace in Lebanon

Download or read book Gender Inequality in the Workplace in Lebanon written by Alaa El Kurjieh and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender inequality in the workplace is one of the various forms of discrimination that women face worldwide. Research showed that although the Lebanese legal system seems to be more advanced compared to other Arab countries, yet the number of women involved in the workplace remains lower than expected. Although the Lebanese Labour Law prohibits discrimination based on sex, race, age and so on providing equal opportunity in employment and access to jobs; gender gap in the workplace still exists. Then, it can be realized that the existing policies fail to achieve equal representation of men and women in the workplace which signifies that major steps must be taken to solve this issue. It is suggested that changes on the Lebanese Labor Law to be more effective and considerate to the barriers that hinder the progress of women into the market, and ensuring that it is applied and implemented efficiently along with the internal policies in the organizations, are key steps to eliminate the forms of discrimination against women and reduce the gender gap in the workplace.

Book Work and Labor Relations in the Construction Industry

Download or read book Work and Labor Relations in the Construction Industry written by Dale Belman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for a skilled, motivated and effective workforce is fundamental to the creation of the built environment across the world. Known in so many places for a tendency to informal and casual working practices, for the sometimes abusive use of migrant labor, for gendered male employment and for a neglect of the essentials of health and safety, the industry, its managers and its workforce face multiple challenges. This book brings an international lens to address those challenges, looking particularly at the diverse ways in which answers have been found to manage safe and productive employment practices and effective employment relations within the framework of client demands for timely and cost-effective project completions. Whilst context, history and contractual frameworks may all militate against a careful attention to human resource issues this makes them even more deserving of attention. Work and Labor Relations in Construction aims to share understanding of best practice in the industries associated with construction and related activities, recognizing that effective work organization and good standards of employee relations will vary from one location to another. It acknowledges the real difficulties encountered by workers in parts of the developing world and the quest for improvement and awareness of some of the worst hazards and current practices. This book is both critical and analytical in approach and seeks to alert readers to the need for change. Aimed at addressing practical issues within the construction industry from a theoretical and empirical standpoint, it will be of value to those interested in the built environment, employment relations and human resource management.

Book The Relationship Between Work family Conflicts and Turnover Intentions Among Workers in Lebanon

Download or read book The Relationship Between Work family Conflicts and Turnover Intentions Among Workers in Lebanon written by Zeina Toufic Al-Hakim and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few studies have dealt with the emerging trends of work-family conflicts and tur nover intentions in Lebanon, while none have dealt with any potential relationsh ip between them. This research presents Lebanese scholars and HR managers with a thorough description of both phenomena, the factors that influence them, and an investigation, through a survey, of the existence of a relationship between the two. Moreover, the study presents other possible relationships between them and job satisfaction, work demand, work control, and work support. A questionnaire was designed and distributed to a wide sample of white-collar wo rkers in Lebanon of different demographics. Analysis revealed several relationsh ips between the abovementioned phenomena while drawing attention to new factors that influence work-family conflicts and turnover intentions not investigated in previous research. Accordingly a set of human resource interventions were recom mended for companies in Lebanon to take into consideration in avoiding employee turnover while minimizing work-family conflicts and ensuring a satisfying work e nvironment.
