Book Traders and Trade in Colonial Ovamboland 1925 1990

Download or read book Traders and Trade in Colonial Ovamboland 1925 1990 written by Gregor Dobler and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking the history of trade and of traders as its subject matter, this book offers the first economic history of northern Namibia during the twentieth century. It traces Namibias way from a rural, largely self-relying society into a globalised economy of consumption. This transformation built on colonial economic activities, but it was crucially shaped by local traders, a new social elite emerging during the 1950s and 1960s. Becoming a trader was one of the few possibilities for black Namibians to gain monetary income at home. It was a pathway out of migrant labour, to new status in the local society and often to prosperity. Politically, most traders occupied a middle ground: content of their own social position, but intent on political emancipation from colonial rule. Economically, their energy and business acumen transformed northern Namibia into an increasingly urban consumer society. The development path they chose, however, depended too much on the colonial reserve economy to remain sustainable after 1990. Their legacy still shapes spatial and social structures in northern Namibia, but most traders businesses have today closed down. By telling the history of the rise and decline of traders and trade in northern Namibia, this book is thus also a reflection on the conundrums of economic development under conditions of structural inequality.

Book The African Photographic Archive

Download or read book The African Photographic Archive written by Christopher Morton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African photography has emerged as a significant focus of research and scholarship over the last twenty years, the result of a growing interest in postcolonial societies and cultures and a turn towards visual evidence across the humanities and social sciences. At the same time, many rich and fascinating photographic collections have come to light. This volume explores the complex theoretical and practical issues involved in the study of African photographic archives, based on case studies drawn from across the continent dating from the 19th century to the present day. Chapters consider what constitutes an archive, from the familiar mission and state archives to more local, vernacular and personal accumulations of photographs; the importance of a critical and reflexive engagement with photographic collections; and the question of where and what is ‘Africa’, as constructed in the photographic archive. Essential reading for all researchers working with photographic archives, this book consolidates current thinking on the topic and sets the agenda for future research in this field.

Book Photo Archives and the Idea of Nation

Download or read book Photo Archives and the Idea of Nation written by Costanza Caraffa and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Das "lange 19.

Book The Awkward Embrace

Download or read book The Awkward Embrace written by Hermann Giliomee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-08 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democracies derive their resilience and vitality from the fact that the rule of a particular majority is usually only of a temporary nature. By looking at four case-studies, The Awkward Embrace studies democracies of a different kind; rule by a dominant party which is virtually immune from defeat. Such systems have been called Regnant or or Uncommon Democracies. They are characterized by distinctive features: the staging of unfree or corrupt elections; the blurring of the lines between government, the ruling party and the state; the introduction of a national project which is seen to be above politics; and the erosion of civil society. This book addresses major issues such as why one such democracy, namely Taiwan, has been moving in the direction of a more competitive system; how economic crises such as the present one in Mexico can transform the system; how government-business relations in Malaysia are affecting the base of the dominant party; and whether South Africa will become a one-party dominant system.
