Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Outlines in Physical Chemistry Completion of the work of this course entitles the student to three hours of University credit per term, two of which are given for experiments performed satisfactorily in the laboratory and one for written reports based upon these experiments. The following Laboratory Outlines describe the work to be accomplished during the year, though certain of the experiments may be omitted at the discretion of the Professor in charge. No work of a similar nature done elsewhere at another college or university is required to be repeated, provided the work be submitted to the Professor in charge for his approval. Book Laboratory Manual of Physical Chemistry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Manual of Physical Chemistry Classic Reprint written by Albert Watson Davison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Physical Chemistry In presenting this manual of laboratory exercises in physical chemistry, the authors have been prompted by a threefold object: first, to facilitate the task of the instructor in handling large classes of students beginning a course of practical physical chemistry; second, to assist the student in recording his observations in a clear and comprehensive manner; and third, to present such quantitative exercises as will be particularly desirable in the training of students of engineering. In view of the fact that there are, as a rule, available for laboratory work not more than two and one-half hours at a time, it has been found desirable to have the different pieces of apparatus set up beforehand by the instructor. To this end, each experiment is preceded by an exact list of the apparatus and chemicals needed. It is believed that this will materially aid the instructor in assembling the necessary equipment. At the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the laboratory course immediately follows the completion of the theoretical course in physical chemistry, and students are thus prepared to take up the study of any experiment herein listed. It is therefore found practical to prepare the equipment for one or two units of each exercise before the laboratory course starts, and to shift the student successively from one experiment to another. In this way, an excessive amount of preparatory work is avoided. Many of the experiments have been in use in their present form at this Institute, and elsewhere, for a number of years, and have been found to be thoroughly satisfactory. Directions have been made as concise as possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Outline of College Chemistry In the effort to make misapprehensions and mistakes as nearly impossible as may be, the directions have been entirely rewritten, and in many cases have been amplified, and a num ber of the experiments have been modified. An entirely new set of figures has also been drawn. To render the exercises more instructive, and still further to discourage mechanical work, a larger number of questions has been inserted. With the same end in view, data in regard to solubility have been introduced (appendix) as a new feature, and their use in explaining chemical phenomena has been illustrated in many experiments. The rationalizing value of using the conceptions of chemical dynamics, the electromotive series, and the degrees of ioniza tion has been emphasized by more frequent references. Some of the formal quantitative experiments have been modified, and the directions have been made clearer. The value of these experiments has been found to lie chie y in the basis they give for clear understanding of the difficult subject of combining, atomic, and molecular weights. Book A Laboratory Outline of Elementary Chemistry Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Laboratory Outline of Elementary Chemistry Classic Reprint written by Alex Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Outline of Elementary Chemistry In preparing this Outline, several things have been kept in view. For example: The selection, the order, and the form of statement have been arranged so as to harmonize with, and suitably to illustrate the subject matter of the Author's text-book of Elementary Chemistry. The apparatus has been made as simple and small in amount as possible. The list of chemicals has also been restricted to the least expensive materials and the smallest number of items. The indispensable experiments which are less simple have been left for the class-room demonstrations. All the experiments, and the wording of the directions, have been tried under the Author's supervision with young pupils, and have been altered until found satisfactory. The lengths of the laboratory periods assigned to chemistry are so different in different institutions, varying from 45 minutes to 90 minutes and even more, that exercises arranged for any one length of period would still be a misfit in the majority of cases. To make adjustment easy, the exercises have been subdivided, so that where the whole exercise would occupy more than 45 minutes, certain parts may be omitted or assigned to the next period. It is not expected that the whole of the work outlined will be done by any one class. A choice is required, so that the interests of the instructor, the sex of the pupils, and other factors may receive consideration. Book Laboratory Exercises in Physical Chemistry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Exercises in Physical Chemistry Classic Reprint written by John Norman Pring and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Physical Chemistry The laboratory exercises described in this text book are designed to meet the requirements of students who wish to follow a laboratory course dealing with some of the applications of physical chemistry. The experimental work here described is based on the exercises introduced by Dr. R. S. Hutton, in 1900, as a supplement to the course in practical physics which form part of the curriculum of the students in the Honours School of Chemistry in the University of Manchester, in their first and second years' studies. It has been endeavoured, in this collection of exercises dealing with certain branches of chemical physics, to present to chemical students a publication which will for their purpose supplement the text books of Schuster and Lees, on "An Intermediate Course in Practical Physics" (Macmillan & Co.), and "Advanced Exercises in Practical Physics" (Cambridge University Press), and it is expected that students following this work will have already taken one or both of the above courses in pure physics. The field in the borderland between physics and chemistry has grown to dimensions which are now very large and is still rapidly increasing. And observe that one cell is partially filled with dilute sulphuric acid. When the cells are connected in series with a battery, evolution of gas in this cell will indicate that the material placed in the second cell is a conductor, and that the circuit is therefore complete. If, on the other hand, the material in the second cell is a non-conductor, or at all events a very bad conductor, no evolution of gas will be observed in the first cell. When the substance placed in the second cell is a solution, what conclusion may be drawn in regard to the condition of the dissolved body? [r. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises: With Outlines for the Study of Chemistry to Accompany and Elementary Text The primary object of the authors in preparing this book is to place in the hands of the science teachers in the State a laboratory manual adapted to the average high-school requirements. In it we have endeavored to emphasize the value of laboratory in struction in the laboratory. The aim is to give the student facts, practically of his own finding, before a discussion and correlation of these facts. Our experience in teaching has led us to the conclusion that to reach the best results a student of chemistry must first be given experimental work. In this way his interest is sufficiently aroused to hear with profit descriptive lectures, or to read with some attention the discussion of facts and principles as found in elementary text-books. To this end he is carefully guided in his experimental work, after which he is expected to study the subject of his experiment in one or more of the texts referred to at the end of each exercise. These texts are not necessarily the best that might be given, but they are in many cases the only ones available to the pupil. They are in all cases those found to be at hand in class use or otherwise in the high schools of this State. Book The Structure of Physical Chemistry

Download or read book The Structure of Physical Chemistry written by C. N. Hinselwood and published by Hubbard Press. This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...
