Book Laboratory Manual of Biological Chemistry

Download or read book Laboratory Manual of Biological Chemistry written by Otto Folin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Biological Chemistry: With Supplement Equivalent and Normal Solutions. - Since the molecular weight of sodium hydroxid (NaOH) is 40 and that of hydrochloric acid (HCl) is 36.46, it follows that 40 g. of the former contain the same number of molecules as 36.46 g. of the latter. If 40 g. of sodium hydroxid and 36.46 g. of hydrochloric acid are each dissolved in pure water sufficient to make one liter of solution, each liter will contain the same number of dissolved molecules. It will take a little less than one liter of water to make a liter of solution because the dissolved substance takes up some space. A normal sodium hydroxid solution contains four per cent, of sodium hydroxid. By per cent, in the case of solutions is usually meant the amount of substance present in 100 c.c. of solution. Mixing equal volumes of two such solutions is, therefore, the same as bringing together practically the same number of the two kinds of molecules, and the result is the instantaneous and essentially complete transformation into sodium chlorid (and water). X NaOH + X HC1 = X NaQ + X H2O If either or both of the solutions should first be diluted with a considerable bulk of pure water, the result on mixing the two would be the same, for the extra amount of water present takes no part in the reaction (except to the extent of absorbing a part of the heat set free). The two solutions are equivalent. They also happen to be normal solutions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Genetics Laboratory Manual Classic Reprint

Download or read book Genetics Laboratory Manual Classic Reprint written by E. B. Babcock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genetics Laboratory Manual It is assumed that the laboratory course will accompany and supple ment a combined lecture and recitation course and this manual is intended in particular to supplement the text-book, Genetics in Relation to Agriculture, by Babcock and Clausen. Although it may seem advisable in some cases to alter the sequence Of laboratory exercises according to the progress of the class in the study of subject matter in the text and lectures, yet it may be found more feasible to assign certain portions Of the text to precede, accompany or closely follow certain laboratory ex croises. Probably the latter would be the wiser plan inasmuch as the laboratory exercises may occasionally have to be shifted in order to take advantage of a certain stage of development in plants or for various other reasons. With these provisions in mind the following series Of exercises are recommended. The exercises referred to here by number will be found in proper sequence in the body Of the manual. It will be remembered that under each number there are three alternatives designated as a, b, and c. If the a series Of exercises is used in 1919, the b series may be used in 1920 and the a series in 1921; or by selecting and rearranging individual exercises an instructor can make up an entirely different course Of one, two or three laboratory periods per week as desired. Cer tain exercises, however, call for material which can hardly be duplicated and it is recommended that they be included in each year's work. Fur ther suggestions and various specific aids to laboratory work will be found in the appendices. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Laboratory Manual of Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Manual of Physiology Classic Reprint written by Frederick C. Busch and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Physiology It has been the aim of the author, in compiling this little volume, to give an outline of experimental physiology for the guidance of students, in a brief and concise form, and sufficiently comprehensive in the subject-matter considered. Descriptions of apparatus and illustrations have, to a large extent, been omitted, since these are more properly the function of the instructor and of the student himself. For the same reason, results and conclusions of experiments have been left to the student to work out for himself, the descriptions in the text being largely confirmed to methods of procedure involved in obtaining the results. The arrangement of chapters and experiments can be modified to suit the individual instructor. The more difficult experiments may, if desired, be given as demonstrations. It has been the experience of the author that students work best in groups of two for the simpler experiments, and of four for the more complicated experiments. The selection of the experiments presented has been made with a view to the needs of the medical student and to the practical application of the first-hand knowledge, obtained in the laboratory, to medical problems, later. At the same time, it must be borne in mind that one of the main benefits to be obtained from laboratory work is the training in methods of exact observation which the students receive. The chapter on vision was prepared by Dr. Lee Hasten Francis, to whom I take this opportunity to express thanks. Book Laboratory Manual of Biology

Download or read book Laboratory Manual of Biology written by George William Hunter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Biology It is self-evident that such an abstract and philosophical presentation of biological data, as would be suitable for advanced students, is quite out of place in a manual intended for young pupils, untrained in observation, unskilled in accurate description and easily discouraged by being left, at the outset of their studies, too much to their own devices. The present book is not an experiment: it is the outgrowth of actual class-room experience with large classes of young pupils. Our private notes were combined and revised and the amended questions mimeographed Mid used in class work by five different men during the past year; the personal equation has been still more nearly eliminated through the helpful criticism of practical teachers who have read the manuscript. The course of study for the High Schools of New York requires that botany and zoology (including physiology) be taught in the first year. A single volume covering both subjects is desirable in order to avoid the changing of books at the end of the first semester. The aim of the work may be expressed in the word training: training the student to observe, to record his observations in verbal descriptions and drawings, to compare the forms studied and, as far as possible, to interpret structure in terms of function. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Frog: A Laboratory Guide The frog needs no introduction to the zoological labora tory, where it has assisted many generations of students in acquiring their first knowledge Of vertebrate anatomy. As Professor Holmes writes in his Biology of the Frog, They are nice clean animals, easy to dissect and admirably fitted for physiological experimentation. In most localities they are easily collected and may be kept in the laboratory alive. All dealers in biological sup plies handle them both alive and preserved. Natural sources of supply are being augmented constantly by the development of frog-hatcheries to supply the commercial demand. The literature dealing with the frog is voluminous. No attempt is made in this guide to indicate more than a few of the books dealing with the anatomy of the frog which may be useful in supplementing this brief sketch. It has been held by some that the function of a laboratory guide is to ask the student what he finds instead of telling him what he is to find, but, in the experience of many teach ers, the problem type of laboratory manual is apt to waste the time of both instructor and student, and wear out the patience of both. It is the writer's opinion that the needs of the beginning anatomist are best served by presenting him with a straight-forward account of what he is to find in the specimen he is dissecting. If he encounters an anomaly or discovers the writer in a slip, he may be referred to larger manuals and to original contributions, and taste for himself the joys and hardships of research. Book Applied Biology an Elementary Textbook and Laboratory Guide Classic Reprint

Download or read book Applied Biology an Elementary Textbook and Laboratory Guide Classic Reprint written by Maurice A. Bigelow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Biology an Elementary Textbook and Laboratory Guide A noticeable feature of the book is omission or at least lack of emphasis upon several hundred technical terms commonly used in elementary books of botany and zoology. Italics have been used for emphasizing the most important scientific terms when introduced and defined, while technical words in the plain type should be understood by students as important for special study, for temporary use in the text, or for com parison with other books. The authors realize that in select ing the biological terms for emphasis they may have omitted some really useful terms, and it may be that certain italicized words which have a narrow range of application do not deserve the emphasis given them. A further discussion of this ques tion of technical words will be included in the Teachers' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Introduction to Elementary Practical Biology

Download or read book Introduction to Elementary Practical Biology written by Charles Wright Dodge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Elementary Practical Biology: A Laboratory Guide for High-School and College Students For the purpose of developing in the student the power of independent observation, to teach him that the source of all knowledge is not the book rather than the specimen, that there is a great deal to be seen besides that which the book describes, and that he is not to consider that, though his observations may not agree with those of the book, the latter must, necessarily, be right-these are the reasons why this guide has been written. The guide consists essentially of questions on the gross and minute structure and on the physiology of a series of common animals and plants which are typical of their kind - questions which can be answered only by actual examination of the specimen or by perform ance of the experiment. Directions are given for the collection of specimens, for their preservation, and for preparing them for examination, also for performing simple physiological experiments. Particular species are not required, as the questions usually apply equally well to several related forms. The material of which the guide is composed has been gradually accumulated during an experience of nearly seven years of teaching high-school and college classes, consisting of students of both sexes and of ages vary ing from fourteen to fifty years. With the exception of a few additions made while preparing the manual for printing, all of the work herein detailed has been per formed by college students, and a very large part by students in the second year of their high-school course. Although it is thought that the topics are so arranged and the questions so worded that any one of average intelligence can study any or all of the organisms given, still it is not intended that the guide shall supersede the instructor, but, rather, aid him. The student will always require the advice and suggestions of his teach er, who will need to point out many of the structures which here are only named, and which it would be im possible to describe so that the student could find them for himself, without defeating the very object which the guide seeks to attain.
