Book excerpt: This study was designed to examine the relationship among channel area, tidal period, tidal prism, and maximum channel velocity. Movable-bed model experiments were run to define an equilibrium area for different tidal periods and sediments. The magnitude of the areas measured provided additional data for the relationship of the tidal prism versus minimum channel area in a size range slightly larger than previous laboratory data in the continuum to very large field inlets. These data may help define the tidal prism-minimum channel cross-sectional area relationship in the midrange channel size.

Book excerpt: Sandy shorelines approach an average equilibrium configuration, in planform and profile, under the influence of the wave climate, the tides and tidal currents, and the local winds acting on the material which forms the shore. The tides and tidal currents vary in a predictable sequence but waves and local winds occur randomly and shorelines exhibit correspondingly random deviations from an average configuration. The most active position of most shorelines is found in and near inlets where strong currents move the material stirred up by wave action. Past studies of the equilibrium configuration of shorelines have suffered from the lack of quantitative data on the wave climate, the average long-term wave exposure, and data on the daily, seasonal, and annual variations in wave intensity and direction. The long-range objective should be to relate the configurations of shorelines and the temporal variations in configuration, to the waves, winds, tides and currents. A shorter range objective is to explain quantitatively the behavior of inlets and adjacent shores. (Author).

Book excerpt: Field data from a large number of tidal inlets on sandy coasts of the United States were analyzed and a relationshp was established between the tidal prism and the minimum flow cross section of the entrance channel. Other variables make it difficult to determine the effect of grain size on the prism-area relationship. Generally, detailed sampling of bottom sediment is not available, but a summary of samples in the Golden Gate and its approaches shows little range in grain size. This finding indicates flow resistance in that vicinity may be controlled more by form resistance of ripples and sand waves than by grain size alone. To evaluate the effect of grain size more precisely, tests were repeated with different size sand grains and the results of the tests compared. Test procedures and results are presented. (Author).
