Of necessity, these selected proceedings can only give a taste of the overall content of the Symposium but nevertheless, reflect on the growing interest and awareness of the importance of the microbial contamination of our environment and the implications for human health. Numerous contributions address different aspects of one of the waterborne diseases of most concern, cryptosporidiosis. However, this did not preclude reports on outbreaks of other diseases. Several contributions raised important questions: how should epidemiological data be interpreted? and what methods are valid for regulatory monitoring? were of particular interest. Newly developed analytical methods have allowed a greater range of pathogens to be detected. However, such techniques have little significance if they cannot be used for the practical evaluation of water quality and part of this is the acquiring of monitoring data upon which future treatment and policy decisions can be made. Biofiltration is expected to become even more common in the future as efforts intensify to decrease the presence of disease-causing microorganisms and disinfection by-products in drinking water, to minimize microbial regrowth potential in distribution systems, and where operator skill levels are emphasized. Recent Progress in Slow Sand and Alternative Biofiltration Processes provides a state-of-the-art assessment on a variety of biofiltration systems from studies conducted around the world. The authors collectively represent a perspective from 23 countries and include academics, biofiltration system users, designers, and manufacturers. In humid regions, river water naturally percolates through the ground into aquifers (which are layers of sand and gravel that contain water underground) during high-flow conditions. In arid regions, most rivers lose flow, and the percolating water passes through soil and aquifer material until it reaches the water table. During these percolation processes, potential contaminants present in river water are filtered and attenuated. If there are no other contaminants present in the aquifer or ifthe respective contaminants are present at lower concentrations, the quality of water in the aquifer can be ofhigher quality than that found in theriver. In RBF, production wells — which are placed near the banks ofrivers —pump large quantities ofwater.
