Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Principles of Agriculture Although laboratory instruction in agriculture is relatively new, it is surprising to observe how little it has gained from pedagogical progress in other sciences. This is particularly true in the matter of carefully prepared laboratory exercises and supplies. Our present methods of teaching other sciences have resulted from long and trying experiences, but is it not a fact that the teaching of agriculture, especially in the more elementary forms, instead of profiting by these experiences, is tending strongly to repeat the same mistakes ? For example, it is but a few years since the laboratory teaching of elementary physics was lamentably weak. The principles of the subject were poorly organized and usually obscured in a mass of details, not infrequently being entirely lost sight of in over-exacting methods of experimentation and elaborate apparatus. Today the abandoning of these errors is making physics a practical laboratory study for the average student. To ignore these facts will, in the opinion of the authors, materially delay the time when laboratory work in agriculture will be effectively taught in secondary courses. Much as the authors have felt the seriousness of the situation mentioned above, they have tried not to err in the opposite direction, namely, that of simplifying the work to an outline of mere suggestions, too brief to be of much value to teacher or student. Such suggestions as to laboratory work have come mainly from two sources: (1) d104 books in agriculture, appearing as in other sciences, before laboratory manuals, have frequently and not improperly suggested laboratory work to accompany text study. (2) Many brief outlines of laboratory work have been written by state superintendents of public instruction and by specialists in the various branches of science. Unfortunately for the success of these outline plans, the already over-burdened teacher seldom has either time or facilities to carefully prepare in detail lessons merely suggested. Without the aid of carefully prepared lessons, the average student studies to little advantage. This lack of prepared exercises and corresponding supplies results in bluff and disgust on the part of the teacher; inattention, disorder, and equal disgust on the part of the student. The naive outline suggestion, "Study the grasses growing in the field," has about the same meaning and effect as if one would say to a Hottentot, "Go into the jewelry store and study those fine watches which you will find there." The object in writing this course in Agricultural Laboratory instruction has been: (1) To present some of the more important agricultural facts in such a way as to interest the student, encourage him to think clearly and consecutively along practical agricultural lines, and to help him so organize facts that broad general principles are established. (2) To so organize agricultural supplies that fairly complete scales or standards are established from which the student can reason and judge. (3) To make supplies readily available to schools at moderate cost. The work as presented in this manual had its beginning in at least two independent sources: (1) The method of preparing detailed exercises for teaching elementary general agriculture in secondary schools had its origin largely in the teaching and direction of H. B. Brownell, Professor of School Sciences, University of Nebraska. (2) The idea of preparing laboratory exercises in field crops and making available to schools the necessary supplies for teaching the same, originated ten or twelve years ago with Professors E. G. Montgomery and T. L. Lyon, both formerly of Nebraska, but now at Cornell University. The manual of these two teachers, "Examining and Grading Grains," has done much to encourage and systematize laboratory study in field crops throughout the United States.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Laboratory Exercises and Home Projects Adapted to Secondary Schools Use of exercises and projects. The number of exercises to be completed in a year will depend upon the needs of the local community and the time given to the course. The vocational school giving one half of each day to the course in agriculture should be able to complete all the laboratory exercises and in addition provide the required six months' supervised project work. In schools giving less time the teacher should select those exercises of greatest importance to the local community. Book Laboratory Exercises in Farm Management Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Exercises in Farm Management Classic Reprint written by George Frederick Warren and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Farm Management Being a new subject, the field of farm manage ment is not always clearly understood. It has sometimes been confused with animal hus bandry, horticulture, farm crops, or rural econ omy. It may be taught by persons.t also teach these or other subjects, just as horticulture and dairy industry are sometimes taught by one man; but the distinction between the sub jects should be none the less clear. The teacher of farm management finds that his work is much more closely related to animal husbandry, farm crops, and horticulture than it is to rural economy. One of the important subjects in farm management is the selection and purchase of a farm. This bears the same relation to rural economy as does the selection and purchase of a cow. It is the aim of farm management teach ing to unite business principles with the scientific principles taught by the various departments into such a system that the farm as a whole shall yield the greatest profit. The rural economist must somehow tie all the farms together into a philosophy of progressive civilization. Book Laboratory Manual in Field Crops Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Manual in Field Crops Classic Reprint written by Chester C. Farr and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual in Field Crops From the introduction of Agriculture into the curriculum of our schools there has grown a demand that the student be brought into direct contact with the materials he deals with in his courses; and in the study of field crops there is a need for a suitable outline to follow on each separate division of the work. The author of this manual of Field Crops worked out in his own class room and with the advice and help of noted agriculturists, a series of practicums intended to acquaint the student with some of the most important phases of our common field crops. The course is not intended to equip the student for scientific research work but for what we choose to call the work of practitioner agriculturist, and a very large number of those who study agriculture for four years, become members of this group. For this reason the student of field crops should be given a thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of plant growth and plant structure, which will give him a basis for interpreting any problem presenting itself in his handling of field crops. In preparing this manual the author is indebted to the following books: Hunt's Cereals in America; Bailey's Cyclopedia of American Agriculture; Wilson and Warburton's Field Crops; Shamel's Corn Judging Manual; Coburn's Book on Alfalfa; Hunt's Forage and Fibre Crops; Livingston's Field Crop Production; Spillman's Farm Grasses of the United States; Lyon and Montgomery's Examining and Grading of Grain. Book Laboratory Field and Project Guide

Download or read book Laboratory Field and Project Guide written by G. A. Schmidt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory, Field and Project Guide: In Elementary Agriculture Every sincere teacher of elementary agriculture is striving to make his teaching so practical that it will lead to worthwhile accomplishments. This means that he must not neglect laboratory, field, and project work. The purpose of this little book is to act as a practical guide to such teachers. All the exercises are arranged seasonally so that the various phases of the work may be studied at a time when they will mean most to a child. The exercises in this book are intended primarily to cover two years' work. They are equally adaptable, however, to courses of shorter length where more time per week is allotted to the subject. In both cases, a teacher should consider the outline so elastic as not only to change the order of the exercises when she considers it wise to do so, but also to include others which she considers better fitted to the particular needs of the community in which she teaches. In the book will be found enough material for laboratory, field, and project work to meet the requirements of most states. Throughout the book emphasis has been put upon those topics in which a child in the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades can take part. Book Field and Laboratory Studies of Crops

Download or read book Field and Laboratory Studies of Crops written by Arthur Gillett McCall and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field and Laboratory, Studies of Crops: An Elementary Manual for Students of Agriculture There is a growing tendency in the schools toward educating children in the common things of life. In some States laws have been passed requiring the teaching of elementary agriculture in the village and rural schools. The object of this work is to interest the pupils in the practical things of country life and to give them some conception of the opportunities which surround them. A majority of the children who attend the village and rural schools will remain in the country, and it is right and proper that they should be educated in the things with which they will have to deal ever}' day of their lives. The success of the work will depend very largely upon the teacher. Pupils are naturally interested in those things with which they are constantly in contact, and need only the encouragement of the teacher to direct their enthusiasm. In this manual a few exercises are given to illustrate some of the fundamental principles of plant growth, but the central idea throughout is the practical application of these principles to crop production and improvement. Some of the exercises are original, but many of them have been adapted from the publications of the United States Department of Agriculture and from the bulletins of the Extension Department of the Ohio State University. The writer wishes to acknowledge his deep indebtedness to his wife, Hattie F. McCall, for helpful criticisms and suggestions.
