Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Elementary Physics Most of the experiments in this collection exact of the pupil measurements of some sort, that is, are quantitive. A few, included for the training in accurate work they afford or for their suggestiveness, demand the investigations of the conditions under which certain phenomena develop. They require, however, the use of some physical instrument. Those purely illustrative are given because they demand more careful observation than the pupil can give to a lecture experiment. In the course will be found, I think, illustrations of many of the more common methods of physical research. The exercises are planned for young pupils with no previous training in physics, employ no unduly expensive apparatus, and require no more than forty-five minutes each in the laboratory. The subjects selected are among those bearing on the commoner applications of physical science. Pains have been taken to so frame the instructions that the pupil can prepare himself beforehand to make the most of his laboratory time with the least help from his instructor. This I regard of prime importance. Unless the instructor assures himself before each exercise that the pupils understand what they are to do and how to do it, they will pretty surely exceed the time-limit, and may even make wreck of the whole exercise. Five unprepared pupils require more attention than fifteen who have thoroughly mastered the preliminary work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Elementary Physics: A Manual for Students in Academies and High Schools This little work is, as its name implies, simply a manual of exercises in elementary physics. No claim is made that it embraces all the exercises suitable for work of this grade. It is believed, however, that the exercises as herein presented constitute a sound basis for a strong, rational, and flexible course in elementary laboratory physics. There has been no attempt in this book to usurp the functions of the teacher. Much of the details of the work are most effective when they come directly from him. The inspiration must also come, in large measure, from the instructor; no book can take his place in this particular. In handling laboratory work in physics of any grade, the instructor is confronted at all times with the serious problem of providing apparatus. This problem is all the more serious in view of the fact that good work, even in elementary physics, is quite impossible without reasonably good apparatus. Speaking to this very point, Professor Nichols has said: "The list of instruments essential to the carrying on of an effective course in laboratory physics is not a large one. It includes certain standard apparatus, such as the balance, the air-pump, the thermometer, the projecting lantern, the electrical machine, and the galvanometer; together with such accessories as are necessary to use with these instruments. Without such an equipment, no college or school should attempt to give instruction in physics." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Laboratory Manual of Physics Thls point of view concerning the function of experimental work in elementary physics is maintained throughout the Manual, particularly in the statement of the purpose of each experiment and in the questions asked in the discussions. Consistently with the View that the laboratory course is not a sufficient basis from which to evolve physics as a science, it is assumed in the discussion of experimental results that the pupil has at least carefully read his text-book on the subject of the experiment, and is therefore in _a position not only to state the conclusions which are supported by his work, but also to pass judgment on the quality of it by comparing his results with those known to be correct. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Practical Physics: A Laboratory Manual for Beginners The methods of teaching elementary physics have been recently undergoing an important change, and it is now necessary that the individual members of classes should be taught to themselves perform the experiments, instead of the teacher, as has been hitherto commonly the practice, alone performing the experiments in the presence of the class. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Physics: Largely Experimental; Including the Harvard College "Descriptive List of Elementary Exercises in Physics" The laboratory Exercises of the book are, save in a few unimportant particulars identical with those given in the Harvard Descriptive List of Elementary Exercises in Phys ics, as revised in 1903. The second edition of the book, issued in 1897, was divided into a First Part and a Second Part, the former intended for pupils a year or two younger than those tak ing the latter; and certain subjects, Liquids and Gases, Composition and Resolution of Forces, Gravity and Centre of Gravity, begun in the First Part were taken up again, for more thorough treatment, in the Second Part. The present edition, the third, abolishes this dis continuity and puts the substance of Chapters XIV, XV, and XVI of the second edition into the early part, thus shortening and simplifying the book. On the other hand, the Pendulum is put farther on, into connection with Mo mentum, etc. This rearrangement involves a renumbering of some of the Exercises, which are, for the most part, not greatly changed in their latest revision. Alongside the new number at the head of each Exercise its old number is given in parenthesis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Physical Laboratory Manual Classic Reprint

Download or read book Physical Laboratory Manual Classic Reprint written by E. L. Chaffee and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Laboratory Manual This manual has been adapted particularly to the present equipment and requirements of a course in experimental physics in Harvard College known as Physics C. This course is accompanied by a series of illustrated lectures to the class as a whole, two each Week, and one hour each week of recitation and problem work to the class in small sections. A knowledge of algebra and plane geometry, and a slight acquaintance with the notation of trigonometry are necessary. Familiarity with the use of logarithms or the slide rule is strongly recommended for reducing the labor of computation. The course should properly be preceded by a more elementary course in physics. Small type has been used for a few descriptive and explanatory sections of the text which are not immediate parts of the specific directions of the experiments. The small type does not, however, signify relative unimportance of the material. Introductory remarks setting forth the application of the principles involved precede each experiment or each group of experiments involving the same principles. In writing this manual, some material, for which much indebtedness is expressed, has been freely taken from Professor Sabine's Laboratory Course in Physical Measurements. For two reasons a revision of this book has become necessary. The distribution of time in Physics C has been so altered that the laboratory work now occupies a shorter time than formerly, and the exercises have therefore become unduly long. It is also desirable to include a wider variety of experiments in the manual, so as to fit the somewhat different needs of the various classes of students who use it. In the course of the revision many experiments have been altered, where experience has shown this to be advantageous, or on account of changes in the apparatus.
