Book Laboratory Evaluation of Rutting in Asphalt Pavements

Download or read book Laboratory Evaluation of Rutting in Asphalt Pavements written by Khaled Ksaibati and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feasibility of using the Georgia Loaded-Wheel Tester (GLWT) to predict rutting in the laboratory was investigated in this research. The research was performed in two phases. The first phase consisted of modifying the GLWT to handle 15.2 cm (6 in) cores, developing a laboratory compaction procedure for cores, determining the optimum laboratory testing conditions, and investigating the repeatability of the GLWT. The second phase of the study included correlating rut depth values obtained with the GLWT to actual field rut depth values, utilizing the GLWT to evaluate the effects of the asphalt additive SOMAT on asphalt concrete mixes, and evaluating the rut resistance of Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). Results from the study show that the GLWT is capable of predicting rutting in asphalt pavements prior to construction. In addition, results from the GLWT correlate well with results from more expensive European Testers.

Book Accelerated Laboratory Rutting Tests

Download or read book Accelerated Laboratory Rutting Tests written by Prithvi S. Kandhal and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2003 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past 25 years, the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences, have carried out a wide variety of activities to improve understanding of the challenges in containing and reducing ethnic conflicts, violent extremism, and terrorism. Roots and Trajectories of Violent Extremism and Terrorism provides an overview of this cross-ocean program, which has involved American and Russian scientists, engineers, and medical professionals from a large number of government agencies, leading research institutions, think tanks, educational institutions, analytical centers, and consulting and commercial firms in the two countries. This report highlights challenges addressed by the academies over many years that remain of current interest as the U.S., Russian, and other governments continue to cope with old and new forms of aggression that threaten the livelihood of populations at home and abroad.

Book Laboratory Evaluation of Rutting Potential of Asphalt Mixtures

Download or read book Laboratory Evaluation of Rutting Potential of Asphalt Mixtures written by TF. Fwa and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes a laboratory procedure to evaluate the rutting potential of asphalt mixtures using a wheel tracking machine. Moving loads were applied through solid rubber tired wheels that travel with a reciprocating motion on slab specimens of asphalt mixtures. The specimens were prepared in parallepipedal steel molds by means of static compression to achieve fairly uniform density distribution within individual specimens. The machine allows rut tests to be conducted at different temperatures, magnitudes of applied loads, and speeds of loading. Results of a test program are reported to illustrate the application of the procedure to study the effects of temperature and loading speed on rut development in an asphalt mixture.

Book Evaluation of Rutting Potential of Hot Mix Asphalt Using the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer

Download or read book Evaluation of Rutting Potential of Hot Mix Asphalt Using the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer written by Rafiqul Alam Tarefder and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive study involving rut potential of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) was conducted. Both cylindrical and beam specimens of HMA were prepared using a Superpave Gyratory Compactor (SGC) and an Asphalt Vibratory Compactor (AVC), respectively. Mixture rutting performance was determined in the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer (APA).

Book Advances in Interlaboratory Testing and Evaluation of Bituminous Materials

Download or read book Advances in Interlaboratory Testing and Evaluation of Bituminous Materials written by Manfred N. Partl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-17 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This STAR on asphalt materials presents the achievements of RILEM TC 206 ATB, acquired over many years of interlaboratory tests and international knowledge exchange. It covers experimental aspects of bituminous binder fatigue testing; the background on compaction methods and imaging techniques for characterizing asphalt mixtures including validation of a new imaging software; it focuses on experimental questions and analysis tools regarding mechanical wheel tracking tests, comparing results from different labs and using finite element techniques. Furthermore, long-term rutting prediction and evaluation for an Austrian road are discussed, followed by an extensive analysis and test program on interlayer bond testing of three different test sections which were specifically constructed for this purpose. Finally, the key issue of manufacturing reclaimed hot mix asphalt in the laboratory is studied and recommendations for laboratory ageing of bituminous mixtures are given.

Book Laboratory Evaluation of Asphalt Concrete Mixtures Containing High Contents of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement RAP and Binder

Download or read book Laboratory Evaluation of Asphalt Concrete Mixtures Containing High Contents of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement RAP and Binder written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the effect of added asphalt binder content on the performance and volumetric properties of asphalt concrete mixtures containing reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in the amounts of 0%, 20%, and 40%. A laboratory-produced mixture containing 100% RAP was also evaluated. Performance of the mixtures was evaluated based on three criteria: stiffness (dynamic modulus), fatigue resistance, and rutting resistance (flow number and asphalt pavement analyzer). Results showed that a 0.5% increase in binder content improved both the fatigue and rutting resistance of the 0% and 20% RAP mixtures with only slight (insignificant) decreases in dynamic modulus. However, the addition of various amounts of binder to the 40% RAP mixture led to a significant decrease in rutting resistance with little or no improvement to fatigue resistance. Volumetric analysis was performed on all of the mixtures, and detailed results are presented. Based on the results of the study, the authors recommend that the Virginia Department of Transportation supplement current asphalt mixture design procedures that are based on mixture volumetric properties with laboratory-mixture performance testing.

Book Evaluation Indicator of Asphalt Mixture Rutting Susceptibility

Download or read book Evaluation Indicator of Asphalt Mixture Rutting Susceptibility written by P. Hao and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rutting is the major cause of failure of asphalt pavements. Excessive rutting often results in premature maintenance and rehabilitation activities, reducing the service life of the pavement. It is very important to evaluate the rutting susceptibility of asphalt mixtures in the laboratory at high temperatures. Wheel-tracking devices have gained a great deal of attention as candidates for proof-testing the ability of asphalt mixtures to resist rutting; currently, there are a number of different wheel-tracking devices and different evaluation indicators. The objective of this study is to evaluate indicators of asphalt mixture rutting susceptibility in the laboratory, using the wheel-tracking test and data for different asphalt mixtures and test conditions. It is found that the dynamic stability indicator in the Japanese standard is not suitable for evaluating the rutting susceptibility of asphalt mixtures, but that the relative deformation ratio is a suitable indicator.
