Book Evaluation of Crumb Rubber Modified Mixtures Using Performance Based Analyses

Download or read book Evaluation of Crumb Rubber Modified Mixtures Using Performance Based Analyses written by Robert W. Saxton and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the laboratory performance of crumb rubber modified mixtures compared to a standard bituminous mixture using performance based test procedures. This study was part of an asphalt resurfacing program for the Seattle Washington area. Laboratory analyses were used to estimate the long term pavement performance of these mixtures in the field. Six mixtures were tested: The standard Class 'A' surface mixture for the Seattle area, Plus Ride II® base course gradation (dry process) using AC 5 and AR 4000W binder types, Plus Ride II® surface course gradation (dry process) using AC 5 and AR 4000W binder types, and ARHM-GG surface course gradation using crumb rubber modified (CRM) AR 2000 (wet process). The performance based tests used on each mixture evaluated the different failure modes a pavement may encounter in the field: fatigue cracking, permanent deformation (rutting), thermal cracking, age hardening, and water sensitivity. Many of the tests used were developed by the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) to test for a mixtures susceptibility in these failure modes. Test results indicate the CRM mixtures performed better than the Class 'A' surface mixture, with respect to fatigue cracking. All of the Plus Ride II® mixtures performed inadequately when tested for permanent deformation. On the other hand, the ARHM-GG surface mixture performed well, even better than the Class 'A' surface mixture with respect to permanent deformation. The ARHM-GG surface mixture showed better low temperature characteristics when compared to the Class 'A' surface and Plus Ride II® mixtures. The CRM mixtures were less susceptible to aging than the Class 'A' surface mixture. Finally, all of the mixtures demonstrated low moisture sensitivity. The final conclusions were made relative to the Class 'A' surface mixture. The ARHM-GG surface mixture performed as well as, and in some cases better than, the Class 'A' surface mixture. The ARHM-GG surface mixture may be used where the Class 'A' surface mixture was specified. The Plus Ride II® base and surface (AC 5 and AR 4000W) mixtures did perform better than the Class 'A' surface mixture in some tests, however it performed worse in others. Therefore, it was recommended that the Plus Ride II® mixture designs be re-evaluated to provide adequate performance in the failed tests.

Book Polymerized Crumb Rubber Modified Mixtures in Minnesota

Download or read book Polymerized Crumb Rubber Modified Mixtures in Minnesota written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research program was based on laboratory and field studies. All work was limited to the use of a 10-mesh crumb rubber in the dry process. An evaluation of the asphalt-rubber interactions indicated that there should be a reasonable level of interaction between the crumb rubber and the asphalt cement selected for the project. A suggested criterion for defining an acceptable level of interaction would be to establish a minimum viscosity of 15 Poise (Brookfield viscosity) for a neat asphalt cement modified with 20% crumb rubber. When designing a crumb rubber modified mixture, the aggregate gradation should be substantially gapped. The target gradation used in the construction of the Babbit, Minnesota test sections should be adjusted for crumb rubber gradations volumetrically; generally, 1 gram of crumb rubber occupies the same volume as 3 grams of aggregate for a given sieve size. The optimum asphalt content for crumb rubber mixtures should be based on air voids from 1.5 to 3%.

Book Characterization of Rubberized Binders with Wax Additives

Download or read book Characterization of Rubberized Binders with Wax Additives written by Hyunhwan Kim and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crumb rubber is widely used as an environment-friendly material in asphalt industry to improve pavement performance properties. Warm mixture asphalt (WMA) refers to the technologies which allow a substantial reduction of mixing and compaction temperatures of asphalt mixtures through decreasing the viscosity of asphalt binders. In general, the crumb rubber modified (CRM) asphalt mixes require higher temperatures compared to conventional hot mix asphalt (HMA). However, if the technologies of WMA are incorporated, it is predicted to reduce the mixing and compaction temperatures of rubberized asphalt mixtures. For utilization of rubberized mixes in WMA industry, it is needed to investigate the properties of CRM binders with warm additives depending on CRM contents, additive types, aging states, and other experiment variables. This research investigated CRM binders with wax warm additives, and the objectives included: 1) quantifying viscosity changes dependent upon mixing temperature and hauling period through Rotational viscometer test; 2) evaluating the effect of blending time on viscosity; 3) investigating the performance properties of recycled aged CRM binders containing wax additives through Superpave binder tests; 4) evaluating the microstructural properties using an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) and an atomic force microscopy (AFM). The following conclusions were drawn based on the comprehensive laboratory investigation: 1) crumb rubber contents and wax types were found to have significant influence on the viscosity properties of CRM binders; 2) CRM binder with wax additive (LEADCAP) showed better rutting and cracking resistance compared to the control CRM binder for all aging states; 3) the wax additive in recycled CRM binder is observed to play an important role in binder properties even after subjecting to long-term aging processes; 4) the microstructures on morphology images seemed to have a good relation with the engineering properties of warm CRM binders.

Book Development of a Crumb Rubber Modified CRM Asphalt Concrete Mix Design

Download or read book Development of a Crumb Rubber Modified CRM Asphalt Concrete Mix Design written by Mustaque Hossain and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this project was to develop an asphalt mix design method incorporating crumb rubber and using the "Wet" or "Dry" method of producing Crumb Rubber Modified Asphalt (CRM). Several resurfacing projects have been constructed using both the "Wet" and "Dry" methods. Based on this study, the Kansas Department of Transportation could use CRM mixes with a binder content between 7.5% and 9.0% depending on the percent air voids, with 19% to 22% rubber content. In this study, it was observed that using 24% rubber produced mixes that were too sticky to manage. With a rubber content of less than 18% combined with AC-5 it was difficult to satisfy the minimum viscosity requirements. Fracture tests can be used as a basis to determine the optimum binder content for any asphalt-rubber mix.

Book High Temperature Viscosity Performance of Crumb Rubber Modified Binder With Warm Mix Asphalt Additives

Download or read book High Temperature Viscosity Performance of Crumb Rubber Modified Binder With Warm Mix Asphalt Additives written by Hainian Wang and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of crumb-rubber modifier (CRM) in asphalt mixtures has been proven to increase the viscosity of CRM binders. In recent years, warm mix asphalt (WMA) additives have been employed to CRM binders to lower their viscosity at high temperatures, allowing a decrease in the mixing and compaction temperatures. The objective of this research is to investigate the viscosity and storage stability of rubberized WMA binders with different tire rubber concentrations and WMA additives. The tire rubber of 40-mesh, with concentrations of 10 %, 15 %, 20 %, and 25 % by weight of a Superpave performance grade (PG) 64-22 asphalt binder, were used in this study along with the WMA additives, such as Sasobit, RH and Advera. Viscosity tests were conducted on the rubberized WMA binders using the rotational viscometer at four temperatures (135, 160, 177, and 190°C). The statistical analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to quantify the respective effects of the influencing factors on the CRM binder's viscosity. The test results indicated that the addition of crumb rubber could greatly increase the viscosity of asphalt binders, which could be improved continuously at increased crumb-rubber concentrations. However, when considering different WMA additives, the crumb rubber showed different effects on the viscosity of the binder. The three WMA additives could all reduce the viscosity of the CRM binder; in addition, RH had the most significant effect on viscosity reduction. It was also found that the CRM binders with WMA additives had good storage stability. For example, the viscosity of the CRM binder with 10 % rubber concentration and RH only increased by 3.8 % after being stored for 4.5 h.

Book Design and Construction of Asphalt Paving Materials with Crumb Rubber Modifier

Download or read book Design and Construction of Asphalt Paving Materials with Crumb Rubber Modifier written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is a comprehensive overview of the terminology, processes, products, and applications of crumb rubber modifier (CRM) technology. This technology includes any use of scrap tire rubber in asphalt paving materials. In general, CRM technology can be divided into two categories--the wet process and the dry process. When CRM is incorporated into an asphalt paving material, it will modify the properties of the binder (asphalt rubber) and/or act as a rubber aggregate (rubber modified hot mix asphalt). The five concepts for using CRM discussed in the report are McDonald, PlusRide, generic dry, chunk rubber asphalt concrete, and continuous blending asphalt rubber. An experimental work plan for monitoring performance and a stack emission testing program are also included.
