Book excerpt: Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Book Laboratory Directions in General Zo logy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Directions in General Zo logy Classic Reprint written by Winterton Conway Curtis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Directions in General Zoölogy These directions are a revision and extension Of publications by the senior author in 1912 and 1913, and by Curtis and Dodds in 1919. Beginning as printed outlines intended only for use in the University of Missouri, they have come into use in a number of other institutions, and it now seems desirable to provide for more general distribution. The present edition is, therefore, an outcome of some twenty years' development of the introductory course in Zoology at the University of Missouri. It is the result of progressive experimentation in both form and content. The authors know it works with underclass students in such an institution, because it is the product of so much experience, not only their own but also that Of their colleagues and assistants, who have contributed to each revision. The course, as given at the University of Missouri, occupies one semester and consists Of three two-hour laboratory periods and two one-hour lecture periods with time for quizzes taken from both. This is, of course, woefully inadequate for a well-rounded introduction to zoology, but is perhaps as much as can be expected where students in the College Of Arts and Science are expected to meet a similar require ment in physical science. Obviously, the present volume includes more than can be undertaken within these limits. It has been made more comprehensive, because the authors have Often found it desirable to vary the content in their own laboratory work and because a publica tion for general use may properly include more than the minimum needs of a Single institution. Book Handbook of Laboratory Animal Science

Download or read book Handbook of Laboratory Animal Science written by Jann Hau and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building upon the success of previous editions of the bestselling Handbook of Laboratory Animal Science, first published in 1994, this latest revision combines all three volumes in one definitive guide. It covers the essential principles and practices of Laboratory Animal Science as well as selected animal models in scientific disciplines where much progress has been made in recent years. Each individual chapter focuses on an important subdiscipline of laboratory animal science, and the chapters can be read and used as stand-alone texts, with only limited necessity to consult other chapters for information. With new contributors at the forefront of their fields, the book reflects the scientific and technological advances of the past decade. It also responds to advances in our understanding of animal behavior, emphasizing the importance of implementing the three Rs: replacing live animals with alternative methods, reducing the number of animals used, and refining techniques to minimize animal discomfort. This fourth edition will be useful all over the world as a textbook for laboratory animal science courses for postgraduate and undergraduate students and as a handbook for scientists who work with animals in their research, for university veterinarians, and for other specialists in laboratory animal science.

Book Directions for Laboratory and Field Work in Zoology

Download or read book Directions for Laboratory and Field Work in Zoology written by Robert W. Hegner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directions for Laboratory and Field Work in Zoology: For Use in Connection With Practical Zoology There are two chief reasons for separating the labora tory exercises from the textbook: (1) the pupils should not be tempted to depend upon their textbook to answer the questions that are asked in the laboratory, but should make original observations and then arrive at their own conclusions; and (2) teachers do not as a rule agree as to the order of the exercises or their contents, hence it is better to have the laboratory guide separated from the textbook in such a way as to enable the user to modify the order of procedure with the least possible confusion. The great amount of material available for laboratory study has of course necessitated a selection of subjects. The animals included have been chosen with the idea of combining interest with profit so that the pupil may be come acquainted with the common animals which he encounters more or less constantly in his daily life as well as with those that are of particular economic importance. Zoological principles, however, have not been slighted, but have been introduced in their appropriate positions. Many of the animals that are important economically are very difficult to obtain, and directions for the study of these have, of course, been omitted. These animals should, however, be demonstrated to the students when ever possible. A list of species suitable for laboratory study may be compiled from the textbook, and specimens may be obtained from the dealers whose names appear in the appended list.
